Kane stood up and said “Won’t be me.” and then he looked at the Chief of Staff. “Hey Walker, I’ll have the lab on standby for testing. Let me know if you need anything special and I’ll get ya the results as fast as we can.” Kane then just walked out the door.

Bonner stood from her chair. “I’ll get an initial treatment team put together within the hour.” She left the conference room, looked up and down the corridor and then turned left. “Dr. Kane, do you have a moment?”

Kane stopped and turned and crossed his arms on his chest. “You bet. Whats up? he asked.

Bonner caught up and fell into step beside him. “I would like you to consult on a patient. There is no one else that has your medical, science, and engineering expertise. And you will not dismiss the idea out of hand.” She also knew if he said it couldn’t be done, then it couldn’t be. But if it was probable he would do it.

Kane scowled. Well, he scowled more. “What kinda patient? And does the Chief of Staff know you’re asking?”

His scowl didn’t phase her one bit. “A maternity patient. No he doesn’t, but he wouldn’t object. He expects us to exhaust all available resources. We are a hospital ship with science and engineering departments staffed and equipped for the ship’s mission.” She knew Walkee would find her remiss if she didn’t seek out options. “I will tell him when I know there is something to tell him.”

Kane shrugged. He didn’t really care if the Chief of Staff knew or not; but since he and Kane both seemed to take umbrage at Almikaz, Kane figured he’d at least give a small pretense of playing nice.

“Ok, is this an emergency or chronic issue? And I’m guessing this is gonna be something weird or you wouldn’t be coming to me.”

“Emergency. Two weeks ago I did a prenatal open heart procedure on the fetus. The baby is Trill and Denobulan. The mother’s body simply can’t handle the demand the fetus is putting on her physiological systems. Normally we would attempt a surrogate, but no one is compatible.” The lift arrived and she stepped in calling for the deck. “Come down to my office, I’ll show you the file. The weird thing I want,” The doors to the lift closed, “is to know if you can bud an artificial womb.”
