Alexis stood, “I am excited and I am happy. He knows how my mind and my heart works, and that I am strange and different and will never be like anyone else. It doesn’t bother or disappoint him.” He knew and would never treat her like the common denominator in a series of failed attempts at dating and relationships. “Just because I’m not excited like you expect me to be, or want to immerse my life in the lie of a fairy tale doesn’t mean I don’t love him like I should. I’m not you.”
Alexis felt sick and hurt and wished…it didn’t matter. She left. She had to get Frigga, she had reports and experiments to check. Anything but dealing with her mother. In the corridor the doors shut behind her and she muttered subvocally some really colorful swear words and then out loud a few more in Mandarin she’d picked up from Solomon and then her hands moved in a few FSL curses as well.
Bonner
A voice in her ear said You okay? And you used 混蛋 in the past tense.
Ugggghhhh the ear piece. She was so used to having it. Alexis too a breath. She used 混蛋 in the past tense? How did that even work? She started to answer ‘no’, she didn’t lie to Solomon, but then he’d want to know why, and she wasn’t sure she wanted to explain it. She didn’t answer for long seconds which wasn’t like her at all. Not now anyway. When they first started using them sometimes she’d zone it out, but not anymore. I don’t think so.
As Bonner stepped out, someone side stepped around her to avoid a collision. It was Myqian. The XO certainly didn’t need telepathy to know that the doctor was upset, angry even. Her ebony eyes searched Alexis, even has the near miss had caused her heart rate to jump. “Whoa, that was close. Are you alright?” she said with concern.
Commander Myqian, XO
Alexis came an abrupt halt and seeing who she had almost bowled over, her posture became more straight and straight. She looked flustered before she was able to swallow some of her irritation. Myqian would still feel the swirl and storminess of it. “Cmdr Myqian. I apologize.” Was she okay? No not really, but it would have to be the XO that would run into her and notice. Myqian would be able to tell Alexis’ desire to leave, but for once it was not the first officer she was trying to avoid. “Oh,” did she really want to explain to Myqian that she was not? Well it wouldn’t do any good to lie, the woman would be able to tell. “No. I suppose not.” She moved down the corridor, not rudely or, oddly enough, not an attempt to get away from Dirs, but to get away from the door before her mother decided to try and follow her.
Bonner
Dira’s gaze shifted between Bonner’s retreating form and the door she had just exited from a couple of times before she moved swiftly to catch up. “Come with me. I know where to go because, correct me if I’m wrong, but being off this deck right now would be a good thing, yes?”
Commander Myqian, XO
Alexis nodded, “Yes.” Alexis knew she was usually an open book to most people, and she really hoped that was what this was, just people skills because she wasn’t sure she could handle Myqian knowing what her mother thought of her own daughter. Alexis mostly followed because she wasn’t sure if Dira’s words were social or an order. Either way it allowed her to move away from a problem she didn’t know or want to deal with. She didn’t even want to go work which is what she always did when she needed to think things through. This she simply wanted to ignore. As far as she was concerned it could never have happened. She’d be quite happy if everyone else involved acted that way too.
Bonner
Myqian found the nearest turbolift and waited for Bonner to join her. “Deck Fourteen,” she called out. There was only one facility on the deck, so it wasn’t exactly a mystery, but Dira liked to think that sometimes the most obscure places made the best places to think and find perspective. Maybe she could help Alexis and maybe not, but she was going to try.
When they arrived at the Triage Deck, Dira simply stepped off into the cavernous place that currently was its standard open plan with limited storage. Without any preamble, she simply moved over to a group of storage crates and settled herself on one, gesturing to Bonner to do the same.
“Down here it’s blissfully quiet. Far enough away from the chatter and busyness of the crew. Sometimes I come down here to do exactly this: just sit, breathe and decompress,” Dira said, looking around before she returned her dark gaze to Alexis. “So, I don’t need to be a telepath to tell when someone is angry. You can vent here. What is said on the triage deck, remains on the triage deck, unless you say otherwise.”
Commander Myqian, XO
Kane
Alexis looked surprised. Myqian came down here to think? Alexis found that strangely coincidental. The day the XO had chased her out of the R&D lab this was where Alexis had come to work and think and try and figure out what to do. She’d sat in an empty storage closet and tried to work, but had instead lost her focus and had a break down that she was very ashamed of. Vent and it would stay confidential? So this was like a counseling session? She did them, she never avoided them. She found them difficult to delve into her feelings and the reasons for them. Not sure how to explain, Alexis said a version of the one thing that, when at the academy, had always seemed to get understanding for the cadet who said it, and people nodded and then left them alone. “My parents are visiting.”
Bonner
This was one of those times when Dira’s skills all merged together. And perhaps this was even an attempt at reconciling the different parts of herself. Just because she was the first officer, didn’t mean she couldn’t approach someone’s personal issues with all the experience she had gained a psychiatrist, right? “Tell me about them… your parents, I mean.”
Commander Myqian, XO
Alexis tilted her head slightly, what other them could Myqian possibly have meant from the context of their conversation? Perhaps others needed such clarification. Alexis really did not want to discuss her parents. She was hoping for a simple nod and “ah” and the XO go on her way. Alexis hopes didn’t seem to be in play here, though. She took a noticeable breath, Myqian could probably even feel Alexis ordering her thoughts and pushing aside the more pressing work details. “My father is a science officer. Ecology is his specialty and he teaches that and exo-biology at the Academy. He loves research and discovery, but took a job at the Academy when my other got pregnant with me. My mother is a baker, has her own shop in Walnut Creek and is quite successful.”
