Requesting this appointment had been easy and there seemed to be enough people who at least knew Jon that they were willing to help them out with the kids. Today was important because she was meeting with the Chief Science Officer about officially being added to the department roster as a civilian scientist.

For someone with her career experience and years of dealing with unknown situations, Melaia was strangely nervous. But then again, this was the first time she’d been back to work in two years and it had been a decade since she’d last been a scientist. The interest and mentality for science had never left her but she’d had so much time in a command level position that the way she operated had shifted and she knew she’d have to work hard not to let it take over. It wasn’t her department after all.

At the appointed time, Reez found herself at the CSO’s door, dressed in black trousers and a medium blue tailored tunic. With her black ankle boots it felt as close to a Starfleet uniform as she could get. She missed hers old jacket, but this was a new chapter in a different book and she was actually excited about it. With a steadying breath, Mel pressed the chime.

That chime always caught Najma off guard. She put both her hands over her ears for a moment, then she placed both her hands on her desk to calm her demeanor. Finally she said in a fake happy voice. “Please come in.” She stared at the door waiting for the person to enter.

Melaia stepped in and gave the CSO a small smile, aware that there was some unease in the room and hoping that she could navigate this meeting alright. After all, if there was anything she was used to, it was meetings with department heads, as both the junior and superior officer. She could only hope that her previous experience helped her right now.

“Hello Lieutenant, I hope that we’re still okay to have the meeting I requested?” Reez asked.

“Fine”, said Najma. She didn’t remember a meeting but didn’t put it past herself that she had agreed to one and had just forgotten. “So…um…I am sorry. What did I agree to meet with you about? What is it you need?” She said as she motioned for Reez to have a seat.

Melaia moved to the chair and sat down, giving the CSO a small smile. “Well, a little while ago the Captain and I were talking and she suggested I take up a civilian scientist position on the ship. I know you haven’t been on board long enough to maybe know this, but I was a Starfleet officer for many years and before I went on indefinite leave I was starship captain. But before I went into command I was a scientist. I have an Honours degree in planetary ecology with a minor in xeno-biochemistry.” She exhaled. “I need to do something. I’m looking after our twins but I need something for myself and ways to interact with other adults in meaningful ways.”

“Twins…huh.” said Najma with a grin. “Reez I am sorry about my demeanor earlier. I am just....anyway, yes. I am aware of your service history. It’s impressive and certainly more than I have accomplished. But it seems none of that really matter when you abandon your career to have children. Does it?”
Najma could not help it she felt better when she was being mean. She continued in a nice but very fake voice. “I have no problem with bringing you aboard as scientist but are you sure you are ready? I mean how does it feel to now be a CIVILIAN scientist compared to once running an entire ship.” Najma smirked as she looked at her.
