Where is the Answer

Posted by Lieutenant Alexis Bonner (Scientist, Medical Researcher) in Where is the Answer
She couldn’t go back to the lab, she couldn’t go to her quarters (she just couldn’t, the idea made her sick), the lounge, the mess, the arboretum: she couldn’t work there.
There was unused space on deck 15, where the medical module was stored. Alexis was acutely familiar with this deck. It had been part of her reponsibilities previously. The was a small unused office space, empty, no furniture, just empty, waiting. It wasn’t restricted space so it was there that she found herself in the small interior space, sitting on the floor, padds spread out around her in a wide arc, the lights set to a brighter illumination than was necessary. Frigga draped across her lap, refusing to move, Alexis stared at the data on the PaDDs, the information, diagrams, numbers all seemed to float in the air around her and swirl, merge, contort, separate until she could actually see the connections forming.

She let her mind go, let it do the work, but her mind wouldn’t do the work, not totally, not all encompassing. Let Myqian tell the cpt and the security chief. What did she care? Let them feel pity for her. They couldn’t stop it, h#*@ he was Intel and Intel couldn’t stop him. Let them talk about her behind her back. She scanned the padds again and again, nothing connecting like it had earlier when she’d first started that morning. She would figure it out, what it was he was after and then she’d destroy it. She’d destroy the work. Her mind jumped and spiraled and circled back finding no answer. She was moving information from one location to the next in a manic fashion.

Frigga whined repeatedly.

For an hour she stared at the PaDDs, moving information back and forth, her mind not willing to accept the truth of the matter. Soulis wanted something that only she could do, but that he wanted her too. She couldn’t fathom it, not after the repeated abuse, insults, and cruel behavior. Alexis was smart, she knew, she just couldn’t accept it.

The data didn’t connect, there was nothing there that he would want…older, maybe it was older research? Something prior to 6 months ago, that made him seek her out…she needed her old research. She paused in shoving PaDDs into the bag, pulled out the chip and plugged it into the larger of the PaDDs.

She put in a direct call to Intel, “Lt Bonner what can we do for you today? Do you have an update on your projects?”

“No I Do Not. Where’s Meav-Ack? I need to talk to her.” The officer on the other end didn’t even bat an eye. These poor research types just didn’t realize they were replaceable. “She’s not available, you can leave a message with me.” What had Kane said, ‘Don’t play their game.’ Okay she was going to try it on her terms....”We made a deal. I work for her and she keeps Lt Cmdr Soulis away from me. She didn’t keep her end of the deal. She can fix it or I destroy the research: notes, results, samples, All. Of. It.” The man blinked and then remembering that Meav-Ack said that Bonner was doing irreplaceable work tried to back pedal just a bit, “Uhhhhh… well we would have to assign an agent to review your case and then do a risk assessment and with the ship not doing anything specific for us -”

Solomon said this is what he did, that he’d help her. And she was too manic to consider other options. “Fine. Kane can be my case agent. Put Kane in charge of dealing with Soulis. He’s on the ship anyway.” She cut the com off not waiting for an answer. Frigga whinned and nipped hard at Alexis’ hand, she didn’t like her being down there and the poor dog simply wouldn’t leave her alone long enough to go find Kane. Alexis nodded, threw the last of the padds in her bag and let Frigga tug her out the door.
