The middle-aged man sitting behind the desk put down the PaDD he’d been reviewing and looked up at the younger man standing in front of the desk.

“Back to space, Dr. Walker?” he asked. The standing man, now identified as Dr. Walker, nodded.

“I’ve spent six years planetside, and I’m not going to say I’m bored here, per se, but as unstable as a certain part of the Galaxy is getting, I think I can do more out there than I can here,” Dr. Walker said.

The man behind the desk sighed, and set the PaDD down.

“That’s true enough, I suppose, and I can’t really fault you for seizing the opportunity. The Ogawa has a fantastic reputation, and she’s been doing the kind of work you’re apparently looking for for nearly two decades now,” he said. “When do you leave?”

“Next Monday. Medical is sending some new antibiotics to the refugee mission on Carraya IV, along with a couple of junior physicians. I’ll be joining them until the Ogawa shows up with the supplies for the new hospital facility there, and then I’ll join the ship,” Dr. Walker said.

“Well, I’ll hate to lose you, Brad,” the older man said. “We’ll arrange a going-away do Friday afternoon. Any thoughts on who should take your job?”

Dr. Brad Walker pondered for a moment. “Of my current staff, I’d say Dr. Park, even though she’s a bit young for the job and hasn’t got a lot of off-planet experience. Excellent theoretical and technical knowledge of a wide range of conditions, and if she’s able to surround herself with a team that has the practical experience she lacks, she should be fine,” he eventually said.

“Alright, Commander,” his soon-to-be-former boss said, noting the recommendation on a separate PaDD. “I’ll let you get back to your team. Try and get this patient you’re working with cured by Friday.”

“No promises, Dr. Baum,” Brad said with a grin, heading for the door of the office. “Somehow, it looks like the poor schmuck is dealing with both Rigellian Fever and an infestation of Denobulan Hookworms.”

A week later, Lt. Cmdr. Brad Walker, dressed just in his blue- necked Starfleet uniform, approached a runabout sitting on a pad near Starfleet Headquarters.

“This is USS Hippocrates, right?” he asked the NE pilot supervising the loading of cargo into the small craft.

“Bound for Carraya IV, yes sir,” the NE replied. “You’d be Commander Walker, then?”

“That’s me,” Brad replied with a smile. “Got a place for my gear?” he asked, indicating the duffel bag he’d dropped next to him.

“You should be able to stow it under your bunk,” the NE said. “Assuming our other passengers didn’t bring an entire apartment’s worth of kit with them.”

“They’re here already then, good,” Brad said more than asked. “How long until departure?”

“Give it maybe 30 minutes,” the NE said, checking the time on his PaDD. “There’s still a fair few boxes here to stow, then check and make sure they’re all strapped in tight before I get in and do the same with you all. Co-pilot’s already inside running pre-flights, so once the cargo’s secure we’ll be in the air within 5.”

“Good man,” Brad said, picking up his bag once again and stepping into the runabout, heading for the bunk area.

OOC: Welcome Brandon, looking forward to writing with you again. @Cale: you still need to promote me IC, so I can welcome him in my new role, will make things more interesting ;)

OOC: I know, I will when this sim is over in the next couple of days don’t worry :)

A few days later, Brad was on the verge of replicating a pair of ear plugs or simply running a knitting needle through his eardrums. The two junior physicians were very junior, just out of the Academy, and neither seemed to understand the concept of “personal time” or “I’m not interested.”

The first, Ensign Dr. Lana Smythe, had told him several times that she’d joined Starfleet to escape the inner city life of London (though her personnel file suggested she was actually from a suburban community in Surrey), where she’d done several not-technically-illegal things prior to taking her Academy exam, and going into Medical simply because she’d enjoyed medical holodramas as a child.

The second, Ensign Dr. Trinity Weathers, was (admittedly) an attractive young girl, but young enough to be his daughter. That didn’t seem to deter her from trying to attach herself to him like a limpet at every opportunity, ostensibly to pester him with questions about some of his past assignments and the cases he’d seen, but the way she was attaching herself led him to suspect he had an ulterior motive.

Finally detaching her once again, he stole away into the runabout’s cockpit.

“It’s not that I want to be that guy,” he began, “but are we there yet?”

The pilots both laughed at him (and his somewhat less-than-heveled appearance), before the one who’d welcomed him aboard spoke again.

“We’re still two days out. But first, we’re going to meet up with a shuttle carrying another couple transfers to the Ogawa. They’re having engine difficulties and we’ve still got space for another couple bodies.”

Brad looked pained at the thought of two more days with Smythe and Weathers, before eventually shrugging.

“Well, maybe I can at least re-direct our current passengers’ attention to the new arrivals,” he mused, before straightening up again.

“Thank you, Gentlemen.”

The sound of (relative) silence filled the shuttlecraft as it touched down inside the docking bay of the USS Hippocrates. Following the lead of his escort, Dr Jarvis stood up, picked up the duffle bag containing his scant personal belongings and followed the party out into the hanger. A pair of security officers, both human males as far as his eyes could tell, stepped forwards to great them.

“Counsellor Pope,” the first one said firmly; it was not a question. “I’m Jack Ward, chief of security and this is Ensign Barnes. We’re here to escort you to your quarters. After your party have settled in you will be free to go to the mess hall. Understood.” Again that last remark was no question.

Jasper smirked to himself. He could feel the tension in the air with such tangibility that he could have sliced it open if he were in possession of a laser scalpel. While the security chief had given them permission to move between their dorm and the mess hall, he doubted Pope would allow him to do so without supervision. Perhaps serving on board the Ogawa wouldn’t be so bad. At least he would be able to defecate without someone standing outside the door. Assuming of course that Pope had not misled him about the conditions of his enlistment.

Following the security officers, the party made their way from the docking bay to a turbo lift, which took them to the guest quarters. Opening a door Chief Ward ushered them into a small room with four bunks. Barely a step up from his prior sleeping quarters, but at least these would only be temporary Jasper mused. However, he may have to source some ear plugs. The chances of three silent sleepers in the room would be minimal. Stowing his duffel bag in the footlocker he sat down on his bed and grimaced. This journey could not end soon enough.

From the doorway, Pope addressed the Chief, “Leuitenent, I was informed that the Ogawa’s new Chief of staff, a Dr Walker if I recall correctly, was somewhere onboard. Is this correct? I wish to speak to him with regards to my charge.”

The man nodded curtly and indicated for Pope to follow him to where he would find the doctor.

Dr J. Jarvis M.D.

Brad was definitely not hiding from Drs. Smythe and Weathers in the crew lounge, reviewing a medical journal article on one of the diseases that was apparently prevalent on Carraya IV.

He took the new intrusion lightly though, looking up at the security officer’s throat-clearing cough and noticing the elder man beside him.

“Yes?”
