Approaching from the opposite direction, Grayson smiled when she saw the scientist waiting for her. She realized in suggesting they meet here, she was potentially creating a more anxious situation for her companion given the number of potential environments they could choose, but the psychiatrist saw this as an opportunity to get a better understanding of the other woman’s concerns and challenges. “Mariah,” Grayson offered simply, not wanting to stand on formalities.

Not having heard or seen Mariah as she approached, Ria looked rather startled as the other woman’s voice penetrated her thoughts. “Oh, uhm…” she mumbled as she blinked a few times. “Riani … Ria,” she stuttered and felt her cheeks burning as blood rushed to her face. Feeling rather awkward and self-conscious, she fell instantly silent again and dropped her gaze a little while she continued to fidget with her braid.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Ria,” Mariah replied, not fazed by what she had observed so far, but also deeply sympathetic to it. Even though she had some idea of what to expect, Grayson couldn’t help but wonder what had caused such fierce anxiety in the scientist to begin with. Naturally, she wondered if it was connected to some past or more recent trauma. She also had to find an appropriate line between not immediately rescuing the scientist and making her so uncomfortable while they were still getting to know each other and while the psychiatrist was building rapport such that the scientist would never venture therapy again. ” I enjoy the holodeck, but sometimes I get overwhelmed by the sheer number of programs to choose from. I’m wondering, do you ever feel like that? Also, I’m hoping you won’t judge me too harshly if I pick a program and make an attempt to understand What you might like.”

A small, grateful smile tugged at the corners of Ria’s lips at Mariah’s words. “I do,” she admitted and after a short moment’s hesitation, she continued, “At least when I’m with other people. When I go to the Holodeck on my own it’s usually with … a purpose and then I know which of my programs to chose.” Her cheeks turned pink as she finished talking. For a brief moment she had looked up at Mariah, but quickly dropped her gaze again while still fiddling with the end of her long, thick braid.
