“That must be terrifying,” Mariah replied, taking note of her tone, but also the words. She didn’t expect Mel to see her behavior the way Mariah did, but she did hope that by talking to her, she could create some level of comfort. “It sounds like a lot of pressure,” she added, “I can’t help but wonder if you ever think less of yourself for not having all the answers?”

Anisha just stood silently nearby watching them, while her eyes were distant at the same time. “They figured out that the creature that they found is a parent too and her eggs are on the ship. It’s also telepathic. They found out what it eats and are trying to feed it now and stabilise it so that my brother can make first contact with it. It must be its mates that we are receiving so strongly here. I will try and find out more, do you want to ‘go’ with me?” she asked Mel and added in thought * telepathically *
She had used words because she didn’t want to exclude Dr. Grayson.

Anisha’s report distracted Mel from Mariah’s question. “Oh, uh, yes, keep me in the loop.” She paused and her face scrunched slightly. “A mother huh? Poor thing. Must be so stressful to be just whisked away from your home and forced to try to survive with your young.” She couldn’t help the flurry of emotion inside, nor could she hide it from her face. Mel looked at the girl in her arms and then over at her sleeping son. If there was anything true about parenthood it was that it was a constant flip flop of thoughts and feelings, even in her situation. If it had been her and he twins, what would she have done? Even then, she knew that she’d sacrifice herself for them, just like she would have done for any of her crews.

Anisha nodded a hand lightly on Mel’s shoulder.
It’s not necessary, but it helps me focus she thought at Mel with a quick smile. As soon as Anisha opened her mind to Mel’s, Mel got the distinct feeling that it was two minds that she was connected with and it was both male and female… she hadn’t met the Chief of Staff yet in person but now she met him in mind first… in a way. He was a passive part in Anisha’s mind though, focused on something else.

Once the connection was made, Anisha sent out her thoughts to the alien entity, flooding her mind with peaceful and warm images and emotions and Mel could ‘see’ glimpses of very bright episodes from Starfleet’s first contact history… only those that were a full success of course.
For the moment Anisha left it there, waiting if she would get any kind of telepathic reaction from the creatures nearby. The only telepathic message she sent out was Hello, we want to help you. We want to understand you.

” I can help,” Mel said to Anisha before addressing Mariah. “We’re attempting to make telepathic contact with perhaps another creature that we can still sort of feel. I promise we’re not ignoring you,” she said with smile.

Mel focused her attention in such a way as to match Anisha’s thoughts, essentially doubling them, but letting Anisha do the ‘speaking’, as it were.

Whether it was the contact alone or the doubled effort, both Anisha and Melaia would feel some strong emotions that included anger, anxiousness and curiosity. There was no direct response , but the feelings did seem to intensify after the mental communication was sent out.

Why are you angry. Please help us understand so we can help you Anisha thought, doubling her efforts and it all felt easier because Mel was there with her. She didn’t know the woman but what she felt from her felt good. In the back of her mind she also perceived that Arun was in that moment initiating telepathic contact with the female alien in sickbay and she tried to convey that in her thoughts.

There was no direct response to their efforts. The female creature in the lab had dropped off their radar though Arun’s awareness of her regaining some sort of consciousness would naturally be picked up by Anisha. The second creature was clearly still within some sort of vicinity, but it was impossible to know exactly where. All they could be sure of was that it was not there in the Reez quarters.
