Ensign Donivas stepped off the turbolift on Deck 3 and walked quickly to Alpha Sickbay, where the CMO had offices.

Khiryn imagined he was like most of the ship’s crew in considering this check-in meeting entirely unnecessary. His medical files, containing all his medical concerns and entire treatment history, had already been sent to the ship. There’s very little that can be learned from a perfunctory meeting that isn’t already in those files.

Of course, Ensign Donivas had hated the clinical portion of his residency… it seemed like a pointless waste of time, considering he was focusing on Pathology.

Khiryn took a breath and tried to reset his thoughts. Just treat it like a study. The Chief Medical Officer just has to do a little firsthand research, that’s all.

The Akaali entered sickbay and spoke to one of the medical crewmen who seemed to be processing patients. “I’m Ensign Donivas, here for my check-in with the Chief Medical Officer.”

An Ensign acknowledged him and led him to a biobed. “The CMO will be with you in a second.” She stated as she made the biobed start reading his vitals. Lt. Steward came up from his office with a padd in his hand, loaded with information from the last patient. He looked down at it, hit a few buttons and addressed Ensign Donivas. “Hello Ensign, I’m told your new to the ship and need a check in.” He stated. pulling up his appointments on the padd and loaded Ensign Donivas’ information. “I see you have quite a medical history, both with your condition and your career.” He stated.

Khiryn thanked the Ensign and lay down on the biobed while she took his vitals. He past the time by pulling up the schematics for the ship’s sensors via his AR glasses. The words floated in the air in front of him… but were only visible to Khiryn.

Ensign Donivas was expected to be a Science Officer… which meant he needed to be proficient with the relevant ship systems. Its not a bad requirement… a scientists needs to know what their equipment is capable of. To Khiryn, being onboard a ship studying some of the most interesting things in the universe, it galled to focus on something as mundane as the ship’s sensors.

It feels a bit remedial to me… but I suppose I only have myself to blame. I should have requested a ship assignment years ago.

It wasn’t long before the CMO appeared. Lt Stewart had about the same height and build that Khiryn did, except not quite as thin. “Yes Sir. The Cyanate Syndrome has been stable for a while now… just over six months without a flare up. As for the career,” Ensign Donivas shrugged. “The Starfleet Medical Academy offered better exobiology classes than the Science Academy did. But I was always destined to be a scientist.”

“The Medical Academy has some good professors who really know thier stuff. I’ll be honest, I only paid attention to what I desperately had to, to pass Science. I liked how the two fields integrate into each other, but I only paid attention to this is the device, this is how you use it to heal people. I struggle with the experimenting of mixing chemicals and items, that part was not for me.” Lt. Steward responded. “Any injuries, past or current, not already listed, or we should know about? Your glasses working good?” He asks following with the exam in between the small talk.

Ensign Donivas raised his eyebrows at tye question. “The glasses aren’t corrective anymore, they are augmentative.” He tapped the side of the frames to put them in manual mode, and his default displays popped up in his vision. Then Khiryn took the glasses off and handed them to the CMO.

When the doctor put them on he saw several holographic displays appear before him. Ensign Donivas’s daily schedule was in the upper right corner and recent messages and a to-do list were in either bottom corner. “They have a bit of onboard memory and processing power, but I typically link them to a PADD or the ship’s computer. The display can be modified based on what I’m doing… reviewing sensor logs or reading reports. They do a lot to keep me organized and focused.”

Khiryn thought back to how these glasses came about, smiling st the memory. “I got corrective treatment for my vision when I joined the Academy, then I sort of missed wearing them. During my second-year, a 4th year Engineering student was working on his final project for a prototype personalized holographic display. I volunteered to be a test subject if he could fit them into something like pair of glasses, rather than the ugly goggles he had going at the time. These are the 5th generation variant.”

After trying on the glasses and seeing what they do and how interactive they are to the ship’s computers and PADDs, he stated, “I kinda want a pair now. especially if I could program them to see bio readings from the bio beds in my glasses, that would up the level of these checkups and majority of our procedures. This is awesome.”
