Khiryn Donivas

Like many intelligent and driven young people, Khiryn could have easily become aloof and standoffish. At times he does appear that way to people that don’t know him. His work and studies in bridging the gap between different branches of science and linking ideas into patterns has helped him stay grounded.
Khiryn is constantly reminded that no one person can do everything themselves, and it is only through the effective coordination of many people and ideas that true insights and lasting discoveries are made.
He is often clinical and dispassionate on the job. Despite that outward demeanor, he does possess a dry wit, enjoys academic debate, and gets too wrapped up in his work.

Appearance & Style
Khiryn would be described as lanky if he were just a bit taller. He’s average in height and has a spare build with a fast metabolism that never seems to let him pack on any weight.
Ensign Donivas has a mop of dark brown hair, a prominent nose, and a medium skin tone. As an Akaali, he has notably defined anterior crests symmetrically located on either side of his forehead.
The glasses are an affectation modeled on those of an ancient Earth physicist, but are also equipped with basic computing functions. His glasses provide a limited form of augmented reality by linking them with PADDs, tricorders, or the ship’s computer to create visual overlays via the lenses and play audio files through the built-in speakers.

History
-Khiryn’s mother, Batrece, works in Akaali’s government, and his father, Kaalyx, is a renowned forensic scientist who often works with the Federation. Although it might not have been intentional, the family dynamic was centered around high achievement and service to their community. They had three children, Dhiaan, Khiryn, and Luudos.
-The couple had long been close friends with Bal’An Thess, who was a Starfleet Captain at the time, and the man provided references for each of their children to attend Starfleet Academy.
-Khiryn started in the academy at the age of 16. He excelled in his scientific studies, and as his interest leaned toward exobiology, he shifted his focus toward becoming a medical doctor. He graduated from Starfleet Academy at the age of 20, and completed Starfleet Medical Academy and associated residencies with an MD in pathology at the age of 24.
-Although he completed his clinical rotations with decent marks, his goal was always to be a researcher rather than a practicing clinician.
-He never did a traditional cadet cruise. Khiryn was taken on a field study with then Captain Tonah Jaxa, a former professor at the academy. He served as the principal research assistant to the team, and while he did conduct experiments of his own, he learned he was most valuable when collating the data from multiple sources and identifying patterns and correlations for further study.
-He was slated for shipboard duty on multiple occasions, but he had multiple benefactors and mentors pulling strings to have him assigned to their projects. After two years of research, he knew he never wanted to see patients again and officially shifted back to the general Science division. This reset the clock on his promotion timeline.
-Two years later, he earned a degree in Interdisciplinary Science, the culmination of his time spent supporting research and connecting disparate threads of study and thought to reveal new insights. During this time, he also served as the principal research assistant for Captain Leexal Depht before she took command of the U.S.S. Rosetta.
-As an academic and researcher, rank mattered very little to Khiryn, at least until he wanted to lead his own research project. That was when Ensign Donivas learned that not only would he not be allowed to lead his own studies as an Ensign, but his Starfleet career could be cut short if he didn’t promote within a continually narrowing window.
-Khiryn was assigned to Starbase 157 for starship familiarization and qualification. He toured multiple classes of ship and participated in training missions onboard runabouts.

-(This entry is only visible to Senior Officers with the appropriate ARU clearance level) Ensign Donivas was briefly assigned to the Anomaly Recivery Unit and stationed onboard the U.S.S. Leviathan. He participated in the recovery, containment and study of the anomoly designated as Weaver, and was present for the events resulting in the ship’s decommissioning. He holds an ARU Clearance Level of Alpha 2, and is still bound by classification and non-disclosure protocols.

-Bral Grada (Tellarite Male, 28) Science Officer onboard the USS Choree, a Sunlight-class Science Exploration vessel. An academy rival of Khiryn’s who was recently promoted to full Lieutenant.
-Captain Leexal Depht (Denobulan Female), U.S.S. Rosetta, Discovery class Science vessel. One of Khiryn’s mentors. He studied under her as a student and then worked for her as a research assistant.
-Commodore Tonah Jaxa (Bajoran Female) , Dean of Science, Starfleet Academy. One of Khiryn’s mentors. He studied under her as a student and then worked for her as a research assistant.
-Vice Admiral Bal’An Thess (Andorian Male), Commanding officer of the Starfleet Science Center on Rifton. A longtime friend of Khiryn’s parents. He wrote the recommendation letter that got Khiryn admitted to the Academy, and pulled strings to get him assigned to a good ship for his first tour.

Medical Notes & Physiology
Cyanate Syndrome:
-Many Akaali, especially those whose ancestors lived on the western continent, have a mild autoimmune disease known as Cyanate Syndrome. Its origin is traced back to tetracyanate 622 poisoning on Akaali over two centuries ago, and the harsh chemicals the government used to treat the water afterward.
-It can present as fatigue, mottled patches of skin, and even joint pain and stiffness if it is allowed to continue. Khiryn typically manages the disease with diet, exercise, and lifestyle, but it can flare up when he works too hard.
-Treatment is sometimes necessary, but he avoids this because he’s already become refractory to a few common medications.

Other:
-While assigned to Starbase 157 for starship familiarization and qualification, he was exposed to telepathic stimuli. No lasting effects.

Counselor’s Notes
-While not actively disrespectful, Ensign Donivas is used to working in a collaborative environment and is not the most formal in bearing or mannerism. This may cause some friction if he works with more militant officers.
-Given his experiences, Khiryn is prone to equating senior officers’ leveraging their rank with professors playing political games. He operates better when he understands the reasons behind key decisions. He seems to be largely ignorant of how many strings were pulled during the first four years of his career.
-Ensign Donivas is anxious to prove himself and make rank so he can continue his Starfleet Career. He feels a large amount of stress to perform well on board his first ship.
