Katie stepped out of Main Engineering and headed to the turbolift that would take her to Deck 3 and the alpha Sickbay for her boarding physical.

“Deck 3 thanks, love,” she said to the turbolift.

She listened as it begun, it seemed to be whurring a bit. She noted that verbally, as well as a reminder to check all of the turbolifts. She had the station ones humming, and she’d do the same here. Even though there was no one there to talk to, she filled the turbolift with talk, new ideas to connect different types of technology together, thoughts on improving the ship’s systems, reminders to herself to send the Brainiacs back at the station suggestions to maintain their systems, … she was certain that Kotan Veras would grumble endlessly about her suggestions … before doing it exactly the way she wanted, after he realised it was the best way of doing it.

The turbolift stopped, a bit sharply. It seemed to her the stop could also do with an overhaul, and there was a Trill component that if crossed with a Nausicaan holding belt (one of the few uniquely Nausicaan engineering solutions that worked as expected) would improve it sufficiently. Of course, there was the problem of getting it from the Nausicaans, at 5 foot nothing, she wasn’t going to try to win it herself.

“Thanks love,” she said to the turbolift once she got out.

She continued to talk as she went, noting ideas, organising them into lists, some for her team, some for the XO, some for her Brainiacs back on the Outpost. Remind me to send a subspace to Kotas with the suggestions when I’m off duty later today, love, she told her reminder service. A chirp told her she would get the reminder as requested. She reached the doors to sickbay and they opened at her approach. She winced at the scraping sound. They could definitely do with a tune up as well. Main sickbay doors need a tune up, Katie told her reminder service, send a couple of the ship’s brainiacs here to fix it when available. “Sorry honeys,” she told the doors, “I’ll get you fixed.”

She looked around at the people in the sickbay, “just talking to the doors, folks, they are in bad shape. I’m Katie Hawkins, your new Head Brainiac, I mean Chief Engineer. Here for my boarding physical.”

OOC: She still has no idea that this is anything but an ordinary vessel … or the restrictions aobut communications with those not on the vessel. Can’t imagine her communicating with the Engineers back on the starbase would go over well … particularly not with her old 2IC, Kotan Veras, being a Cardassian and Civilian, no matter how innocent her communications might be. Tagging Jenn’s character here as the RTF Senior Officer/COS as she may want to ‘discuss it’ with Katie. - Russell

Hey Russell, not sure how the COS would know this since Katie hasn’t actually contacted anyone, and isn’t monitoring personal comms. That might be more of an Intel dept. thing. But feel free to shoot me a DM with what your idea was if you think I can help. - Jenn

OOC Oh, of course, guess that intelligence would make more sense. It was just something I read … on the support documents or somewhere like that about crew on the ARU ships not communicating with those on other ships, sorry Jenn

IC: The medical staff were rushing around, Katie took a seat and used her tricorder with the engineering enhancements she developed on her previous posting to scan the inner workings of the sickbay doors, to work out why they were so clunky. Her enhancements included crossing an experimental Klingon phase inverter with a relay switch developed by a chief of operations and a ferengi engineer from DS9 and using a Kazon power coupling (even rarer than working Nausicaan tech - existing Kazon tech) to ensure the phase inverter didn’t overheat the tricorder.

It meant the tricorders managed to identify problems earlier with the systems so her brainiacs got to them quicker and fixed the issues.

“Ah, my poor dears,” Katie said about the doors, “Your closing mechanism has become slightly misaligned, and while that normally doesn’t cause this kind of problem, I wonder if …,” she tapped a button on the tricorder … and nodded, “thought so, the optional updates released three weeks ago to your individual identification sensors were missed and those two issues combined results in that grinding noise when you open and close. Wouldn’t do to have the captain or a VIP coming in here for a checkup and have them run into you when your closing. But not to worry, Chief Brainiac Hawkins is here to fix you up. I recommend this update gets installed immediately and I’ll be back tomorrow to check on the performance upgrade.”

Katie approached one of the unoccupied biobeds in sickbay to run a diagnostic on it while she continued to wait.

“I take it you’re our new Engineering Chief?” Bradley’s voice interrupted her work. “Sorry about the wait, I swear it’s always busiest down here when nothing’s happening.” He leaned against the biobed next to the one she had selected as her project, smiling easily.
