USS Leviathan
Katie's Boarded - A Better Mousetrap
Katie and her two escorts, Moe and Joe appeared in the transporter room on the Leviathan. Katie was still feeling anxious about what was going on, this anxiety rising when she saw her theoretical device in the room, guarded by some security and other personnel (that she’d come to know as being RTF).
It had something to do with the device she invented, the theoretical Hawkins Phase-Null Cage, that someone had seemingly built. To look at it is a dodecahedron forged from tritanium-ceramic composites. a padd is attuned to it to read its conditions and to ensure whatever’s inside it remains there, unable to effect the outside world. She focussed on two specific types of anomalies - the ‘Midas Touch’ and the ‘Animatum Tunicum’.
To contain the midas touch, she implemented magnetic flux suspension to suspend the artifact in a perfect vacuum through the use of intersecting tractor beams. This mean that the artifact has no physical medium to infect through its transmutation effects.
In dealing with the animatum tunicum she drew on her knowledge of the engineering approaches of the Bynar, using a Bynar-inspired dampening weave. This creates a psionic and sonic vacuum, and mutes the object’s ability to project a compulsion field to nearby personnel.
Theoretically, the device works perfectly, because, as far as Katie knew, it was just a theoretical design challenge, but here, seeing her device, she’s no longer quite so sure.
So, if her device has been made, does that mean that the artifacts exist? If so, she was pleased that she included a fail-safe into her cage, specifically if its integrity field is compromised, a temporal shunt is initiated, based on the ancient knowledge of the Bajoran Prophets, which Katie was able to intregate into the Federation and Bynar systems through a Cardassian relay switch, which instantaneously bridged the inverter requirements of the different power systems and ensured that the interior of the Hawkins Phase-Null Cage was frozen in a micro-stasis field until a secure command code is entered.
“Yeah, I’m Katie Hawkins, and apparently my new posting uses theoretical technologies to contain artefacts that cause damage to people, to technologies, to the ship. Is that correct?” she said after she took it all in, “does this mean it isn’t as theoretical as I thought it was? That … I’ve built a better ‘mouse trap’ …” then she thought on that, “and maybe have been caught in a mouse trap that I won’t be able to escape from?”
She kept on talking, until one of her escorts, Joe, or perhaps Moe, said to her, “Lieutenant Hawkins, would you please be quiet.”
She fell silent at the adminishment, and waited, as the other one of her escorts, said, “Lieutenant Katie Hawkins is here as ordered, welcome to the USS Leviathan, your crew mates will welcome you.” He looked to the transporter operator, “return us to the shuttle, we have more to collect, hopefully less talkative.”
Joe and Moe disappeared in the transporter effect, and Katie looked around, feeling the urge to talk but not wanting to be told off again … if she annoyed them too much, she may not be wanted any more, and it may result in her … dismissal, whatever that looked like on a ship like this.
