Bethany entered her office. Well it was hers, but it didn’t feel like it. That was okay though. She sat at her desk and punched in her access code to pull up the information from the admiral about their target. She wasn’t sure what she was looking for, but she hoped she would recognize it when she saw it.

The LCARS interface flickered to life under Lt. Gadi’s fingertips, the data packet from Admiral Stockton scrolling across her terminal. It wasn’t much just a compressed series of sensor logs, comm records, and one truncated video file tagged “Outpost Theta Dig Site 3.”

The playback began automatically. A shaky visual came into focus: a research tent, half-lit by portable lamps. Two civilian scientists argued just off-screen, something about field harmonics and resonant interference.

Then a ripple of static cut through the feed, and a flash of color—something bright—passed across the camera lens. The last audible words were “If it does that again, I swear.” The image froze there, mid-motion.
