“Thank you Captain,” he nodded in her direction. “I will, although I’m sure my assigned quarters will have everything I need, I travel light. I’m glad your hand is ok though.”
“It feels weird. However, I am sure that is normal. In any case, I am determined to figure out what I did wrong, so when you have an opportunity I would like you to counsel me on the error I made. My father said you should always learn from your mistakes so they do not happen again. Until then…” she said as the doors to sickbay slid open.
With a casual salute in her direction, Than smiled and nodded once. “It will be my pleasure, Captain. Until then…”
Amparo dislodged the last sample, a vial of viscous red blood, from the holding tray and held it to the light. They inspected it for signs of discolouration and settlers, and grunted their approval when it came back clear. ‘This should be quick,’ they mused while retrieving a micropipette to transfer half the sample into another vial that inevitably found its way into an empty computer port. The rest became the source of a blood smear that they attached and adjusted to the stage of a microscope they had, unironically, referred to as ‘Mike’ since starting hours before. ‘Mike’ had given them some useful results – some diseased cells, some with funky shapes, the occasional microbe… but nothing interesting. Amparo adjusted the magnification and zoomed into a single cell, deflating somewhat when they noticed it was a healthy red blood cell. No abnormality. No fiendish companions. Nothing.
“Mr Cervantes…” they clicked their tongue and fished the PaDD from down the bench to make a quick note, “…good news, your cells are boring.”
Amparo rolled from the bench to the monitor to check the computer’s progress. They noted the low TSH and ferritin, then had the ‘within normal range’ results transferred to the open file. With that, they cleared and sterilized the bench before heading to their office to update the files and draft official reports. It was in the time between the labs and office that Amparo overheard the tail-end of the captain and (who they suspected was) the new chief engineer’s conversation. This seemed as good a time as any to get to know some of the other new staff.
“Captain,” Amparo greeted with a smile, passing to approach the Lieutenant and Nurse.
“Nurse, Lieutenant,” they nodded to the two, then turned their attention to the nurse. “Thank you for your hard work this morning. We have a afternoon packed with physicals, so why don’t you take a break? I’ll conduct the Lieutenant’s physical and we can discuss strategy after.”

“It’s well earned,” Than smiled at the nurse. “You did good with her hand. I was lying when I said it didn’t scar much, usually the regenerator has trouble from the plasma infection but you healed that sucker like a pro, I am impressed.”
“Listen to him,” Amparo jabbed an approving thumb at Than, “he knows what he’s talking about.”
Turning his head to look at Alvaro-Byrd, Than transferred his smile to them. “Hi Doc, I’m Lieutenant Osedi, new CE. Please be gentle.” It was corny and well-worn, but it was one of the less overused opening lines that was heard in sickbays, at least according to the nurses in the Saracen’s sickbay. Not so oddly, however, the Klingon doctor on the ship claimed every single patient opened with that line to him.
Amparo snagged at tricorder from the adjoining bench, glancing up to catch Than’s razz, which they returned with a ‘no promises’ that might’ve been misconstrued as an honest response if not for the crinkles in the corner of their eyes. They extended a hand. “Doctor Álvaro-Byrd. New-ish CMO.”
“Nothing to report that I am aware of, no Vulcan measles, Klingon herpes or Tellarite pox. I haven’t visited Risa in over a year either.” Pointing at the Bio-bed behind him he raised one eyebrow. “Shall I sit here?”
Lt Osedi, CE
“Hmm, then we can remove those…” they made a note-taking gesture and nodded, “go for it.”
“So, you beat me to my usual questions,” Amparo re-calibrated the tricorder to his Trill biochemistry, “how about we run a few scans to make sure everything checks out?”
