Conrad sat at the familiar yet unfamiliar desk in the Captain’s ready room. This wasn’t his desk. This wasn’t his ship. But circumstances brought him to the necessity to use it as if it were. He took several deep breaths to compose himself before he activated the terminal on the desk and hailed Foremost Fleet Command.

“This is Captain Mackenzie. I’m calling to talk with the Fleet Commander. I’ve had to assume command of the Leviathan and need instructions.”

=^=Cpt Ward you have a call from a Cpt Mackenzie. Says he’s taken command of the USS Leviathan.=^= F. Cpt Ward pinched the bridge of her nose. Well that wasn’t right, on several accounts. The Leviathan was part of the special fleet sipped ARU and she was the flag ship. Apparently something had happened to cause a major shift in how the ARU operated and she was now Fleet Commander for the elusive ARU. She had expected to hear from them eventually, but that name didn’t sound right. Pulling up the information she had…yes a Cpt Zachariah Cobb and a Cmdr Ryder Raauhl. =^=Ma’am?=^= She had learned quickly that there was never a full day here and she just waited with every cream and crackle of the station for one of those Anomalies to walk into her office and either eat her or sit down to play cards.

=^=Patch him through to my ready room=^= while she pulled up what she had on their current mission and on Mackenzie. =^=Cpt Mckenzie., I’m F.Cpt Ward. Where are Cobb and Raauhl and what can I do for you?”

=/\=Fleet Captain Ward…=/\= Conrad started his response then stopped as he thought of exactly how to explain things. =/\=The short answer is I have no idea where both Cobb or Raauhl are. I met the Commander briefly after the Captain had disappeared but then he disappeared right in front of me before he even had the chance to brief me. As for my own involvement, I was just hitching a ride when the Leviathan was shifted to another dimension or galaxy with no visible stars. Captain Cobb was pulled into some sort of anomaly with whereabouts unknown. Then the Commander vanished as the ship was shifted back to normal space. I’ve ordered for what repairs need to be made and then best speed back to the Starbase.=/\=

He looked away from the viewscreen as a troubled look settled onto his face. =/\=This crew seems to think they’re expendable and the dregs of Starfleet, the ones not wanted by ‘normal’ ships. Other than a bit of guarded nature against new people, I’ve not noticed any reason why that would be the case. Everyone seems to work together well in the face of extreme adversity. I’m not sure how long the ARU can afford to look for the CO and XO, but I’d just like to recommend that whoever gets assigned next is made aware of the challenge and opportunity the Leviathan presents. The crew is a but insular but I expect that when whoever is in command can earn their trust, that they’ll be fiercely loyal.=/\=

While Mackenzie spoke Ward requested the sensor data from the Leviathan. With no standing commanding officer, the process went through easily enough. =/\=I am truly sorry to hear about Cobb and Raauhl. They are good officers. We’ll dispatch another ship to investigate. I wish I could say that the feelings of the crew were unfounded, but the longer I’m here, the more I see it’s true. The Leviathan has lost the following crew to these anomalies or the psychological strain of her mission: chief engineer, two security chiefs, a chief medical officer, a brilliant enlisted engineer, more chief science officers than I can count, and a third of the crew to an escaped anomaly. The last RTF commander disappeared and we aren’t sure how or why. There are other organizations interested in the work of the ARU, that will go to great lengths to gain that knowledge. Leviathan’s previous counselor was killed in the line of duty protecting that. I have to wonder if something similar has happened to Cobb and Raauhl.=/\=

Ward looked concerned and shook her head. =/\=The previous admiral in charge of the ARU recruited carefully for their skills, but they are misfits to a certain degree. But they wouldn’t have the skill necessary to do the job otherwise. Admiral Roebuck seemed to have a knack for convincing them that he was their last chance to stay in Star Fleet and be beholding to him. He is no longer here.” Ward took a deep breath. “Bring her back to star base Captain. Give the crew a long break, they’ve earned it. We’ll get you a new XO and CoS and brief you on your mission. Command codes have been transferred to your name. Your pilot, McReady will be able to get you through the gauntlet safely to the starbase. Congratulations, the Leviathan is yours now.=/\=

Conrad was shocked at the sudden appointment. =/\=Wait a minute there, Fleet Captain. This is awfully sudden. I know I can’t just leave the ship to their own devices in the meantime but I was on an intelligence mission. I know it wasn’t a vital mission but someone has to do it. I’m not completely opposed to being given another command but I guess ultimately, I’m more curious why me.=/\=

Ward shrugged, =/\=Why not you? You’re available for assignment, and in one call you have shown more care and gumption for the crew than the previous command team did. Accepting their ‘fate’ rather than creating a destiny. With your intel clearance you will have no issues gaining information from the ARU folks. Something the previous CO didn’t have. Half the time he didn’t even know what was being carried on his ship. Through no fault of his own, but because someone decided to restrict his clearance level. Oh and you obviously already have a good feel for what is going on and who is on the ship. No reason to upset the crew by loosing more leaders.=/\=

Conrad nodded slowly, =/\=I suppose that makes a bit of sense. I guess Command can’t exactly get upset at my being unable to finish the last mission given to me and that gives me a bit of joy. Alright, I accept the position. Not that you had to twist my arm too hard.=/\= He grinned a bit. =/\=I’m going to let the crew R&R for awhile after we get to starbase. It’ll give them a chance to recuperate and for crew replacements to come aboard. I’ve got Magnusson as acting XO for the time being but getting a replacement will be good.=/\=
