Surprising Surprises

Ah another crew birthday. This one for the new CSO, DaiMon Lazol. He was a tough one to crack. Casela had not met with him again, yet. He was having trouble getting the knife she wanted delivered. Oh yes she knew all about that. She wasn’t worried. She’d obtained quite a bit of information about Mr. Lazol. He wanted to know what S31 knew about him, which wasn’t as much as she hoped, but not surprising. Lazol hadn’t done anything to really acquire the attention of the Section.

Casela had several contacts outside the ‘official’ channels. She had learned that Lazol had lost his family at a very early age. And as much as she wasn’t sure she trusted Lazol, she had a soft spot for orphans. Lazol’s father had worn a pendant that was, from what she could tell, a type of family heirloom. Or could have been. So Casela had attempted to track down the original, but had come up short. So she designed it and used a bar of latinum she had and used it along with the replicator to remake that pendent. She’d thought about asking Ryder, he was skilled, but she wanted to keep anyone out of the wrath of Lazol. So she worked on this using the computer. It was a suspension of pure latinum on a heavily braided chain made out of latinum. Lazol’s family name was scratched in Fereginar onto the pendent. She placed it in a box, and using all the skills she had managed to get it into his quarters, and leave no trace of who had left it.

She laughed to herself, ‘Good luck figuring that one out Lazol.’ There was no note, other than, ‘Happy Birthday. Welcome to Leviathan.’ What was that rule of aquasition? Once in a while declare peace, it confuses the hell out of your enemies? Or something like that.

It had been a stoic day for Lazol. Sure he might have turned another year older but what was the point? He was alone on a ship with people that tolerated him at best, his parents and older sister had been dead for decades and his brother? Well. No one knew about his brother and Lazol made sure of that. So suffice to say a birthday was not something that he really thought more of than a quick thank you to the gods of fortune for granting him another successful year and wishes for more to come.

He walked into his quarters and over to a small refrigerated case, pulling out a bottle of a particularly good vintage illegal brandy of some kind and popped the cork. He had no one to impress, he had no company to host, he was alone. That depressed him and he took a swig from the bottle, wondering why he was doing this at all. The anomaly that took his parents and crippled his brother had eluded him for over 60 years now, and besides there was no way to make up that lost time. He found solace in his possessions, and even though he was a wildly successful man there was still that part of him that felt empty. He had downed about half the bottle, a feat that would make Cobb proud when he saw something out of place.

He rose and walked over to the box. Well I say walked I more mean that he tried to stand, landed flat on his face and rose, steadying himself on a rather ornate chair as he stumbled his way towards the box. Vision blurry as he breathed heavily he grabbed at it clumsily, knocking it to the floor as the contents spilled out. His father’s pendant! He stared at it for the longest time before he said, “It can’t be.....” He picked it up, the metal was too perfect, the engravings were too clean but it was nearly identical. A tear came to his eye as he wiped it away knowing no one could see this moment of weakness. Putting the pendant over his head he clutched it tightly as he wept softly, the emotions heightened surely by the brandy but there and real all the same.

The next day say Lazol wake up, a headache that would make a Nausiccan blush between his lobes as he heard the faint clatter of latinum rings from around his neck. He reached down and clasped the pendant, holding it up as he looked at it, rolling it between his fingers “It’s almost the real one.” He said as he brought it closer to his eyes. His thoughts from the night prior were accurate. The engravings were too clean, the edges of the pendant too sharp to be the real one. He took a deep breath and let go of it, letting it fall to his chest before he tucked it into his shirt. He tapped the panel and said, “Lazol to Casela. We need to talk.” If there was one person on this ship he could get to find out who snuck this in, she was going to be it. Perhaps his past was catching up and if so, he needed to be ready.
