Annoyed at her mental wanderings, she went to rake the fingers of her free hand through her hair and blew a slightly frustrated breath through her nose as they caught on one of the pins keeping her hair back off her face for her duty shift. Tugging it out quickly, she placed it on the table in between them and briefly let go of his hand to perform the same action on the other side and then the back, tossing her head lightly so her brown hair fell loosely around her shoulders. Giving Chavez an apologetic smile, she quickly grasped his hand again and then took another small sip of her drink. “Good as always,” she proclaimed. “I wish I’d remembered to ask for real alcohol, though. How about yours? I’ve never heard of that drink before.”
Lt Cmdr Nunn, CNS
Domingo tried to show a relaxed smile to assuage Katie’s obvious overthinking, he used his thumb to rub across the back of her hand.
“I’m glad your drink is good. Mine is decent, actual alcohol would’ve been better, but it is a refreshing drink. Has blackberries, sage, lime juice, tequila, and a carbonated lemon-lime liquid mixed together. Would you care to try some?” He asked while holding his glass out to her.
Ensign Chavez, Sec
Katie’s face lit up in sheer pleasure at the sweet offer from Chavez and she nodded eagerly. “I’d love to try it,” she replied as she reached out to carefully take a sip. Holding the liquid in her mouth briefly before swallowing, a look of delight came over her features again. “That’s delicious,” she observed.
Lt Cmdr Nunn, CNS
Domingo carefully retrieved his drink and took another taste, he savored the blending of flavors before setting the glass back down. He looked around the lounge, just taking in the atmosphere along with the jovial expressions present on most everyone’s faces. The ability for others to let the past remain buried and attempt to live out life made him envious.
With a wistful look back at Katie, Domingo asked, “How are you holding up after everything?”
Ensign Chavez, Sec
The question startled Katie mid-drink. The burn of synthehol on the back of her throat and nasal cavity led to a quick coughing fit and she snatched her hand back so that she could politely do so in the inside corner of her elbow. Wiping away the resulting tears from her cheeks with the back of her hand, she gave Chavez an apologetic smile and shrug. If only he knew what a loaded question that was. “How about you? “
Lt Cmdr Nunn, CNS
Domingo looked on shocked after surprising Katie with his question as he didn’t think it was anything to choke over. He hurriedly reached for a napkin and held it out in easy reach for her to grab.
“It’s been a whirlwind ride of activity with danger and combat aplenty. We’ve lost what seem like good people, but I find myself unable to mourn. I didn’t really know anyone.”
Ensign Chavez, Sec
Katie accepted the napkin and used it to dab her watery eyes gently. “I understand that and, to a certain extent, it’s what you sign up for when you join Starfleet.” Her lips pressed together slightly as if she had more to say on the topic of Starfleet, but she quickly began to speak again. “Pop question - what’s your favorite meal?”
