Her skin damp with sweat, Katie tossed and turned in her bed. A long, exhausting day of supporting the crew had finally come to an end and she had buried herself into the plush blankets of her bed immediately, forgoing a meal or a shower or really anything else other than half a glass of wine in her attempt to escape. She had sunken into sleep quickly, but it was not a restful sleep…

“What did you do to her?”

Katie heard her own voice, shrill with anger and fear, but distant, as though coming from the clouds. Like an omnipotent being, she swirled high above the scene below her, looking down on her cast of characters. She could just see the balding spot on the top of a middle aged man’s head, knelt over the limp body of an attractive Starfleet officer. The lieutenant pips on the officer’s collar shined brightly… too brightly. Katie turned away for a moment, shielding her eyes until the beams of light finally faded. The balding head whipped up, shifting its attention from the lieutenant to another uniformed officer, the light too dark to identify and a mist of fog seeming to surround the form.

“I said… what did you do to her?”

There came the voice again, the rage easily overtaking the fear. The mist slowly began to float away, revealing what appeared to be a much younger form of Katie, even though it was only several months before. The balding head looked down at the body and then back at Other Katie, allowing Katie to see the intense anger mirrored in his eyes. In slow motion, she watched as he shifted his weight to his front foot, slowly and surely applying pressure to lift his body, moving his other foot so that he was in a squat and then oh so slowly rising to his feet. He paused a moment, watching the body minutely shift as her lungs filled with air and deflated, the only sign of life. Stepping over it, first one foot, then the other, he lunged at the still slightly misty apparition of Other Katie…

The superbly violent shake of the Dresden threw Katie out of her bed, only intensifying the panicked breathing that the nightmare had brought. She was saved from flying any further in her quarters by the mess of tangled sheets around her, only allowing her body to make it to the floor. Feeling stickiness on her forehead, her hand went up to feel what seemed to be a mixture of blood and sweat. Trying frantically to push her loose hair out of it, she fumbled for the comm badge affixed to her sweatshirt.

=/\= Nunn to Bridge. What the heck is going on? =/\=

There was no immediate answer from the bridge, though her open comm link latched on to dozens of overlapping signals, the computer unsure of their destination in the chaos; calls for help, bellowed instructions to unknown engineering teams, the cries of the frightened and the dying…

She knew that her voice was frantic and hysterical, but at this particular moment, she didn’t really care.

Thrashing in the sheets to try to get free, she was finally able to roll onto all fours. Her head pounding, she rested a moment, checking in with her body to see if there was anywhere else that needed attention. Luckily, it seemed whatever head wound she had suffered from her catapult out of bed was the worst of it and she eased herself back onto her knees and then finally up to her feet. A stark shiver ran through her body as she remembered the moments before the jolt and she immediately pushed them aside, slowly trying to make her way to the door of her quarters. Her quarters had fared much worse than herself… broken glass and an oozing puddle of red liquid showed what was left of the glass of wine she’d replicated to try to relax. Carefully picking her way to the entrance to her quarters, she slipped on a pair of running shoes that had been left strewn there and pressed the button to try to open the door.

Deck 5 was a surprisingly normal sight, other than the doors slightly ajar, the uncertain power forcing them into emergency modes that released the latch mechanisms and allowed them to be slid open manually. The deck containing the senior officers quarters was almost completely empty, save for a single door a little down the way containing the mangled and scorched corpse of what appeared to be a lieutenant commander in what was left of a teal uniform. His, or her corpse was barely recognizable, the door around it bubbled, burned, scorched and hanging by melted threads of duranium.

The lack of response to her comm badge combined with the terrifying sounds and the horror-esque view in front of her made Katie turn ghost white and shake even harder than she had after her nightmare. She bent over, breathing raggedly to try to try to quell the rising nausea from her stomach at the site of the corpse. She had no idea where to go or what to do at this point. She hadn’t been on a ship in so long and now it seemed they were in quite the emergent situation. Her first and only thought was to try to get to sickbay to support the doctors there and she glanced around, not even sure if a turbo lift was functional enough to carry her the two decks up.

The door to the turbolift shaft at the end of the corridor was ajar, but the light inside was still functional, indicative of its working status, for the moment at least. What she didn’t see was the two black suited and helmeted forms that rounded the corner behind her, at least until the golden burst of directed energy scorched the wall next to her head.
