After speaking with Sapeth about the runabout updates, Conner made his way back to the ships security center.

Entering his office and taking a seat at the desk, he tapped his comm badge.

=^=Col. Hammond, this is Lt. Reid. Can you meet me in my office ASAP?=^=

It took twenty minutes but Hammond did finally show up, he was wondinger if he was going to have to lecture the Lieutenant about following chain of command, it was highly iregular to not go through the liason, he really should be dealing with someone lower down the command chain. He rang the door and waited to be asked in. Kilo sat at his side staring up at him waiting for instruction.

Conner stood as Hammond entered. “Colonel, I’ve been given permission from the captain to take a small recon team down to the surface in the runabout that’s being modified. See if we can get a more accurate feel from the populace as to what’s going on. I suggested myself, you, and a couple of security men or marines. You want in?”

Hammond lowered his gaze to Kilo, oh what he would not give to getinto the general action again. “I’m afraid that’s not under my normal job description anylonger” he said with a smile. “I would recomend you take Quade and his team, as operators go there are not to many I would say are better.” trueth was they were Tier 1 there really were not anyone better than that, at least that he was aware of.

Reid sat there for a moment, confused.

“Fine,” he replied. Too boring for you, maybe? I thought your experience would be beneficial, but, fine, I’ll find someone else. Sorry to have bothered you, Colonel.”

He tapped his comm badge. =^=Ens. Shau, this is Reid. Report to my office, please.=^=

Colonel Hammeds eyes’s narrowed, he had learned a little paitenice for the laid back attiutde of starfleet officers. “Lieutnant Reid, I have a thousand Marines on this ship that I’m responsible for, I have teams of highly trained Marines for specifically the kind of mission you are describing. ” he looked at him, “You best check your tone with me Lieutenant, you are walking on very thin ice” .

MJ was on his way to the crew lounge to grab a meal before going on shift when he received a call from the Chief of Security. His eyebrows rose briefly as he wondered what Lt. Reid could want. MJ had dedicated himself to his job over the past few months and had little more than routine interactions with his department head.

“This is Shau. I’m on my way, sir.”

Security was only eight decks down, so it was a short turbolift ride. Before long, he reached the door to the Chief of Security’s office and pressed the chime to announce his arrival. When granted permission, he stepped inside.

“Reporting as ordered, sir. How can I help?”

I figure whatever discussion Reid and Hammond had is over and I can come in whenever you’re ready.

Conner paid Hammond no mind as he left, instead turning his attention to Shau.

“Ensign, on the captain’s say-so, I’m taking a team down to Scallax to do a recon mission. See if we canget a feel for what’s really going on down there. I’d like you to put together a small team to go with us. You up for that?”

“We’ll being going down in a runabout that’s been modified to give us some stealth capabilities. Get the team together and I’ll me you in the shuttle bay.”

MJ didn’t react outwardly, but the mission did come as a surprise to him. His focus so far had been on various tactics for entering the system and preparing to process and house an influx of Federation personnel who wanted to leave Scallax space. A ground mission had been the furthest thing from his mind.

It did make sense, though… that was a surefire way to get firsthand intel and get a better sense of how the populace felt about the political upheaval.

“Yes, sir. I’ll gather the team and meet you down there.”

Ensign Shau came to attention and then left, knowing he had only a limited amount of time to make his decisions and put things in motion.

The Risian pulled up a PADD and started filtering through Security Department personnel. He wanted people with level heads first and foremost. That normally wasn’t an issue in the Security Department, but there were a few younger members who could still become emotional when provoked or under stress. Given his own struggles, MJ knew how easy it was to become emotional under pressure.

He chose a fellow Security Ensign who was a Class 4 pilot, along with a Security crewmember who had a technical background. Her experience was primarily with portable generators and defenses, but MJ figured the technical skills should at least partially translate to shuttle repair if the need arose.

MJ looked for somebody with a background in political science and found an Ensign who had served as security for a Federation diplomat and had studied interplanetary relations at the Academy. Finally, he selected a seasoned crewman with an investigations background, figuring his experience canvassing witnesses at crime scenes would come in handy when gathering information on the surface.

After contacting them and providing the most salient details, Ensign Shau went to his stateroom and put on civilian clothes. Starfleet uniforms would draw too much unwanted attention with tensions as high as they were. The goal was to move about discreetly without drawing notice or inciting a reaction from the locals.

With his preparations made, MJ made his way to the shuttle bay.

Twenty minutes later, MJ arrived in the shuttle bay. He had a pack with some extra supplies and a uniform, but since this was a recon mission, he was sure Lt. Reid would want them to remain discreet. It still feels odd to be on duty in civilian clothes, though.

He saw that a couple of the other team members had arrived, including the Class 4 pilot. The Risian wondered how they were going to get to the surface without immediately being flagged as a Federation auxiliary vessel, but figured he’d be briefed on that shortly.

With that in mind, Ensign Shau went to locate the Chief of Security.

Conner was sitting in the ship’s cockpit, going over the modifications Sapeth had made to the runabout-holgraphic projection programs, and modified warp signature, among others to disguise them. The captain hadn’t given them the green light yet, but he wanted to be ready as soon as she did.

The hatch was open and he heard someone shuffling about outside.

“Ensign Shau, is that you? Climb inside here.”

MJ entered the cockpit area and took a seat next to the Chief of Security. He eyed the consoles, making out some of what the modifications did. Ensign Shau wasn’t an engineer, but he was fairly certain this wasn’t the sort of capability that could be created on a whim. Looks like they’ve been planning this for some time, at least.

The young Risian glanced back and saw that the rest of the hastily assembled team had arrived.

“All personnel accounted for, sir. We can leave whenever you’re ready. Though… I would like to ask. I see we have some modifications in place to disguise who we are, but how are we going to hide the fact that we’re leaving the hangar of a Federation ship?”

“Hopefully, we’ll be able to hide behind a moon or asteroid in a shadow and bail out quickly before anyone realizes we’re out there and making our way to the planet. Captain Andreassen isn’t sure if she’s sending us down yet, so that may become a moot point. I still want to be ready to go on her say-so.”

Conner turned to look at the rest of the team gathered in the runabout. He nodded to each member of the team, then turned back to Shau.

“Good job on picking out the team, but there’s one more I want in here.”

Ten minutes later Max stepped into the shuttle bay in civilian Scallax-style clothing. He had a small pack slung over his shoulder. he made sure to pack couple of supplies for the mission. He was really excited and nervous about this.

He spotted Lt. Reid in the cockpit. “Ensign Hunter reporting, sir.” He said with a small smile

Reid spun in his chair to face the newest member of the security team.

“Hunter, have you been made aware of the situation on Scallax?”

MJ didn’t say anything about the addition of Ensign Hunter; it was the Chief of Security’s call.

The man was relatively new to the ship, and his personnel file showed he had an excellent record. The only thing working against him was that MJ hadn’t had the chance to work with him. That made his fellow Ensign an unknown quantity in Ensign Shau’s eyes.

Lt. Reid had either seen something that MJ hadn’t, or he felt the away mission was the perfect opportunity to assess one of his newest officers.

When Max arrived, the stocky Risian nodded in greeting but didn’t say anything until Connor was done getting him up to speed.

Max stood a little straighter. He hadn’t actually had the chance to get properly briefed. He’d kind of just gotten too excited and quickly grabbed his stuff changed into Scallax clothing and headed down to the shuttle bay.

He really should have slowed down to get the actual information especially before a mission.

“Not really, sir” he said. “I know we might be going on a recon mission to see what’s going on down on Scallax. I don’t have the full briefing yet.”

He shifted nervousy. He noticed Ensign Shau’s greeting nod and returned it quickly. He hadn’t worked with him yet and he hoped he’d get the chance.

Conner turned from the pilot’s seat and eyed Hunter.

“In short, ensign, there’s been a revolt on Scallax and now they want to leave the Federation. The Chimera was tasked with evacuating Federation citizens. Thing is, we don’t have a lot of information as to what’s really going on. A Federation captain and ship seem to have something to do with the rebellion, but what his role is, no one knows. . . yet. There A LOT of unknowns that need answering. I offered to take a covert team down to the planet and do some recon. Try to get a feel for what’s really going on and what led to the revolt. You’re now a part of this team.”

He turned back to the console to double check everything before being green lit.

“We’re just waiting for the Captain’s say-so.”
