After leaving sickbay , Nathan arrived outside the office of the CNS , he did one quick check if his uniform and rang the chime, he then waited patiently with his hands clasped behind his back , this was the last thing he needed to do before reporting to the Xo for duty.

With permission given , Nathan walked into the office , leaving off with his right foot, he stopped a few steps before the CNS’ desk.

“Hello Counsellor , I’m Lt Hawthorn , reporting for my evaluation before I report for duty”

Lieutenant Junior Grade Samuel Andrew McIntyre looked up from the PADD on his desk as Lieutenant Hawthorne entered the office. A warm, professional smile crossed his face as he gestured toward the chair opposite him.

“Welcome aboard the Chimera, Lieutenant Hawthorne. Please, have a seat.”

He waited until the helm officer was comfortably seated before setting the PADD aside and folding his hands together on the desk.

“I’m Lieutenant Junior Grade Samuel Andrew McIntyre, Chief Counselor. This evaluation is a standard procedure for all newly assigned officers. It’s not a test, and there are no right or wrong answers. My job is simply to ensure you’re mentally and emotionally prepared for duty, answer any concerns you may have, and establish a baseline should you ever need counseling in the future.”

Samuel activated the recording on his terminal.

“State your full name, current assignment, and confirm that you understand this interview is confidential within Starfleet Medical regulations, except where safety or mission readiness requires otherwise.”

He paused to allow Hawthorne to answer before continuing.

“Before we discuss your service record, I’d like to know a little about the person behind the uniform. How are you feeling about your assignment to the USS Chimera? Is there anything from your previous posting—good or bad—that you believe I should be aware of?”

His tone remained calm and reassuring, inviting honest conversation rather than interrogation.

Samuel leaned back slightly.

“Take your time, Lieutenant. This is your opportunity to speak freely.”

“Thank you” Nathan responded while taking the seat that the CNS gestured”

Just as soon as he got comfortable he then proceeded to answer the questions put to him

“Lt junior grade Nathan Hawthorne currently assigned to the Uss Chimera as Helm officer/Ops officer”

He paused for a moment before continuing

“I’m excited to be here, there’s nothing like being at the helm of a starship, I am a little cocky but then I think that goes for everyone trained as a fighter pilot”

What goes through your mind in those moments, and how do you keep yourself focused?”

He folded his hands together once more.

“I just focus on my training and follow the Captain’s orders to the best of my ability”

“And outside of duty, how do you decompress? Every officer needs something that helps them leave the job behind for a while. What does that look like for you?”

“I either go the social hub of the ship and have a drink or I might run a program on the holodeck”

He said forthrightly then waited for the CNS to continue, the CNS hadn’t said anythng that Nathan hadn’t expected so far.

Samuel nodded approvingly, recording a few final notes on his PADD before looking back up at the young officer.

“A solid answer. In a crisis, training exists so we don’t have to rely solely on instinct. Trusting your training and carrying out the captain’s orders is exactly what Starfleet expects of its bridge officers.”

He smiled slightly.

“And it’s good to hear you already have healthy ways to decompress. Spending time with the crew helps build camaraderie, while the holodeck can be an excellent outlet—as long as it remains a balance rather than an escape.”

Samuel deactivated the interview recording.

“From what I’ve seen today, Lieutenant, you present as emotionally stable, self-aware, and eager to serve. Your confidence is evident, but so is your willingness to work within the chain of command. I see no psychological concerns that would affect your fitness for duty.”

He stood and extended his hand.

“I’m pleased to clear you for unrestricted duty aboard the USS Chimera. I’ll forward my report to Commander Grady immediately so you can complete your check-in with the Executive Officer.”

A warm smile crossed his face.

“Welcome aboard, Lieutenant Hawthorne. I hope your time on the Chimera is both challenging and rewarding. My door is always open—whether you need professional counseling or simply someone to talk to after a difficult mission.”

“Thank you Counsellor, let’s hope I don’t fly us into black hole”

Nathan added jokingly before he rose from his seat
