Emberlee had left the Major’s office and immediately went to Medical for her physical. She had just had one, but it was a necessary evil. She stepped through the doors of Sickbay and waited until one of the medical staff were able to take care of the physical.

Areiana finished scanning the unfortunate Ensign one last time, trying very hard not to laugh as he sat on the biobed looking absolutely miserable. His face was still bright red, his eyes watered uncontrollably, and he clutched a cup of water like it was the only thing keeping him alive.

“I told you,” Areiana said, failing to hide the amusement in her voice as she handed him another medical tablet. “Orion fire spices are not something you eat because someone dared you to.”

The Ensign groaned weakly. “I thought they were exaggerating…”

“Mmhm.” She patted his shoulder sympathetically. “And now you’ve learned an important life lesson.”

She adjusted the hypospray settings one final time before dismissing him toward recovery with strict instructions to avoid anything remotely spicy for the next few days. The second the Ensign stumbled out of the room, another patient was already waiting near the entrance.

Areiana straightened slightly, brushing a loose strand of hair back into place before stepping forward with a professional smile.

“Lieutenant, you must be here for your physical.” Her tone was warm despite the obvious exhaustion lingering faintly under her eyes from long hours in medical. “I’m Doctor Areiana Blackford, Chief Medical Officer.”

She gestured toward one of the open examination rooms.

“Please, come in. I’ll try to make this as quick and painless as I can.”

The medical bay around them hummed quietly with activity as she led them farther inside. Monitors beeped softly in the background while nurses and med techs moved between stations. The sterile lighting reflected off polished equipment, though Areiana had clearly made an effort to make the space feel less cold than most medical facilities. Small touches of color and a few living plants sat near the corners of the room.

Reaching the examination area, she motioned toward a chair beside the diagnostic console.
Emberlee walked over.

“You can have a seat there.”
Taking a seat where the doctor had motioned for her to sit. Emberlee waited for the biobed to him to life.

As the lieutenant sat, Areiana moved to the nearby terminal, pulling up their medical file with practiced efficiency. Her fingers moved quickly across the controls while she glanced over the preliminary information.

“Standard physical today,” she said casually. “Nothing too invasive unless you’ve managed to injure yourself in a spectacularly creative way recently.” A small teasing smile crossed her face as she picked up a medical scanner. “You’d be surprised how often that happens around here.”

Emberlee chuckled “I managed to slice my hand open about a week and a half ago trying to peel a persimmons fruit.” She said “They had a hard time figuring out the persimmons juice and blood. My sister told me I’m not allowed to be around knives anymore.” Emberlee chuckled “I had to remind her that I fly a huge fighter.”

“Other than a few broken bones from playing various contact sports and doing some spectacularly stupid stunts. I’m pretty healthy.” She added.

Areiana let out a soft laugh, shaking her head as she continued scrolling through the medical data on the PADD.

“Yeah, you’ve got to watch those knives. They can be surprisingly unforgiving. One second you’re paying attention, the next you’re explaining to a doctor why you’ve got half your hand wrapped in a towel.”

A fond smile crossed her face as she remembered the incident.

“My brother, Wyatt, once decided he was going to see how fast he could chop carrots. He claimed he’d seen some old cooking video and thought he could do it just as quickly.” She rolled her eyes dramatically. “Instead, he nearly took the tip of his finger clean off.”

She gave a small, amused chuckle.

“He came stumbling into Sickbay trying to convince me it was ‘just a scratch.’ Meanwhile there was blood everywhere, and he was trying very hard not to pass out. I swear, if there were an Olympic event for making questionable decisions with complete confidence, he’d bring home the gold medal.”

She smiled warmly before giving a small shrug.

“Of course, he’s also been known to do plenty of other ridiculous things over the years. Comes with having a brother, I suppose.” She looked up from the PADD with a grin. “You know how brothers are. They somehow survive despite making you wonder how they’ve lived this long.”

Turning her attention back to the screen, her expression shifted back into that calm, professional demeanor she wore so naturally while on duty. She tapped a few final entries before nodding in satisfaction.

“Well, everything looks to be in order.”

Setting the PADD aside, she reached over and activated the medical scanner mounted beside the biobed. The familiar soft hum filled the room as the device powered up.

“Let’s get you a quick scan, just to make sure there isn’t anything hiding that your records didn’t mention.” She gestured toward the examination platform with an inviting smile. “It’ll only take a minute. Stand right there and try to stay still while the scanner does its work.”

As she adjusted a few settings on the console, she glanced back over with a sympathetic smile.

“Then we’ll get you on your way. I imagine you’re pretty tired after your travels. Transfers are exhausting enough without having to report for a medical evaluation the moment you step aboard. Once we’re finished here, hopefully you’ll have a chance to unpack, get settled into your quarters, and maybe even grab a decent meal before your first shift.”
