USS Chimera
Crew Lounge
Lieutenant Junior Grade Samuel McIntyre sat alone at a corner table in the crew lounge aboard the USS Chimera, enjoying one of the rare moments of quiet his duties allowed.
The lounge was moderately occupied, with off-duty crew members scattered among the tables. Some talked quietly over meals while others watched the stars drift by through the large observation windows that dominated one side of the compartment.
Samuel paid little attention to any of it.
His focus remained on the meal in front of him and the PADD resting beside his plate.
A perfectly cooked medium-rare steak sat on the tray, juices pooling slightly beneath it. Alongside it was a generous serving of fried potatoes seasoned with pepper and herbs. A steaming mug of black coffee completed the meal.
The counselor cut into the steak, revealing the warm pink center before taking a bite.
As he chewed, he glanced down at the report displayed on his PADD.
Crew Readiness Assessment — Engineering Department
His eyes moved steadily across the text.
Several junior engineers had recently completed a high-stress maintenance cycle involving the ship’s warp systems. Fatigue levels were elevated but remained within acceptable Starfleet parameters.
Samuel made a note.
“Recommend additional recreational time for Gamma Shift personnel.”
He submitted the annotation and moved to the next report.
A sip of coffee followed.
Strong.
Just the way he preferred it.
The next file belonged to a young operations ensign struggling with the transition from Academy life to deep-space service. Homesickness, self-doubt, and anxiety were common among first-year officers.
Samuel reviewed the notes from their most recent counseling session.
Progress was evident.
The ensign had begun integrating with her department and was developing friendships among the crew.
Another note was entered.
“Continue weekly sessions. Positive trajectory observed.”
The counselor leaned back slightly, resting the PADD against the table while gazing out the viewport.
Outside, streaks of starlight flashed past as the Chimera maintained warp speed on her current mission.
Something was calming about the sight.
Every counselor developed their own methods for maintaining perspective.
For Samuel, moments like this were crucial.
A good meal.
A strong cup of coffee.
The stars.
And the knowledge that despite the challenges of life aboard a starship, the crew continued to support one another.
His reflection stared back at him faintly from the viewport glass.
Young for a department head.
Still carrying some of the idealism that had brought him into Starfleet in the first place.
Yet experienced enough to know that every smiling face aboard the Chimera carried burdens unseen by most of the crew.
That was why he was here.
Not merely to solve problems.
But to listen.
To guide.
To help people carry those burdens before they become crises.
The lounge doors opened, admitting a group of off-duty security officers whose laughter briefly filled the compartment.
Samuel smiled faintly before returning his attention to the PADD.
There were still dozens of reports waiting for review.
Taking another bite of steak and washing it down with a sip of coffee, Lieutenant Junior Grade Samuel McIntyre settled back into his chair and continued his work. At the same time, the USS Chimera carried its crew deeper into the unexplored frontier.
