“Computer, can you display the service record of Colonel Aldric Voss?” Freja then requested. Might as well start assessing the officer that she’d likely have some form of an encounter with on this mission. She mainly wanted to get a feel for how he’d reacted in the past to confrontation.

She found it hard to buy that he’d betray his uniform without good reason, given everything she just found. But if Command ignored his advice, that could have sown some discord.

It took the computer a minute to pull the file. Freja had to input her command code to unlock the digital seal on it but then the information came through.

Operational Summary

Yet “stability” assumes the current arrangement is just. The Scallax people have legitimate grievances that Federation bureaucracy has ignored for years. My duty is clear — enforce Federation authority. My conscience is equally clear — that authority may no longer be legitimate here.

This contradiction should trouble me more than it does. Instead, it feels like clarity emerging from fog.

Intelligence Assessment

I’ve stopped trusting the intelligence briefs. They’re too clean, too convenient. Someone is managing what I see, and I suspect I know why: to keep me exactly where I am, doing exactly what I’m doing.

The question is whether I’m meant to realize this.

My counter-intelligence training suggests I’m either experiencing early signs of compromise or I’m finally seeing a operation that’s been running around me for months. Both possibilities point to the same conclusion: trust nothing, verify everything, prepare for betrayal.

Crew loyalty remains strong. To me. Not necessarily to Fleet Command, which is a distinction I should find alarming but instead find… pragmatic.

XO Hayes pulled me aside privately to ask if I was “all right.” I told her I was thinking clearly for the first time in weeks. She nodded slowly, as if she’d been waiting for me to say exactly that.

Which raises another uncomfortable question: how many of my crew are thinking the same thoughts I am?

Instead, I’m going to continue my primary mission: protecting this ship and her crew. If that mission happens to align with protecting the people of Scallax from Federation overreach, then perhaps my loyalties haven’t shifted — perhaps the Federation’s have.

The more Freja read, the less she liked this mission. Her gut was telling her that there was a bigger picture, but someone wasn’t talking about it. It wasn’t Voss or anyone on that Scallax independence council either. She wasn’t precisely sure how she wanted to handle this, but it definitely needed careful management, but it was definitely time to share notes with her XO. She’d probably wind up conferring with Hammond afterward too to get his perspective.

“Ma’am things are progressing outside: the Favereau is en route, though I will say her captain is not pleased to be pulled way from some vaccination mission, departments are making appropriate preparations for our arrival and we should be in the Scallax system in a few days,” he smiled expectantly at the senior officer, “What can I help with in here?”
