Ensign Snowden stepped into Sickbay, immediately noting the controlled pace—organized, efficient, but already preparing for something bigger.
“Ensign Snowden, Security, reporting in.”

Areiana had been mid-conversation with her brother when the soft hiss of the door opening reached her ears. She glanced toward it instinctively, then back to the screen, offering Wyatt a small, apologetic smile.

“Hey, Wyatt, I have to go—someone just walked in. Same time next week?” she said, her tone warm but efficient, already shifting gears back into duty.

Wyatt nodded on the other end, the ocean stretching out behind him. The waves rolled in steady rhythm, sunlight glinting off the water. He never gave too many details about where he was stationed—protocol, he always said—and she respected that, never pressing him for more than he could share.

“Enjoy that nice weather for both of us, will you?” she added with a faint grin.

“Always do,” he replied, that genuine smile of his flashing across the screen before the call ended.

The screen dimmed, and for a moment Areiana just stood there, exhaling softly. She rolled her head from one side to the other, trying to work out the tight knots that had settled into her neck after hours hunched over reports and patient logs. A quiet crack followed the motion, and she winced slightly before straightening her posture.

Duty first.

She set the PADD down for half a second, then picked it back up as she stepped out of her office and into the medical bay. The familiar hum of equipment and low background chatter greeted her immediately. Her sharp green eyes quickly found the newcomer standing just inside, and her professional demeanor slipped into place as naturally as breathing.

“Hello there,” she said, her voice calm and welcoming, a small but genuine smile forming. “I’m Areiana Blackford, the Chief Medical Officer here. You must be one of our new transfers. It’s great to see some new faces onboard.”

She approached at an easy pace, already activating her PADD and preparing a new entry. A strand of red hair had slipped loose, and she absentmindedly tucked it behind her ear as she came to a stop in front of them.

“Your name, please?” she asked, her tone gentle but attentive, eyes flicking up from the screen to meet theirs, already beginning her quiet assessment the way she always did—posture, expression, any subtle signs of discomfort.

Ensign Snowden gave a small nod, shoulders relaxed but posture still naturally straight.
“Derek Snowden Ensign, Security.”
He glanced briefly at her PADD, then back to her, easy and composed.
“Just transferred aboard. Here for standard medical intake.”
A slight shift of weight, more casual than rigid.
“No injuries or anything I’m aware of.”
A faint, almost easy smile.
“Grew up on starships, so… this part’s pretty routine.”
He gave a small shrug.

Areiana smiled faintly as she glanced down at her PADD, scrolling through the intake notes with practiced ease. “Oh, good,” she said, a hint of lightness in her voice as she looked back up at him. “So you’re used to all the red tape. This should be fairly pain-free then.” She tilted her head slightly, the corners of her mouth lifting just a bit more. “We’ll keep it simple—just a quick scan, make sure everything’s tip-top, and then I can send you on your way.”

She paused for a moment, studying him—not critically, but with the quiet attentiveness of someone trained to notice the smallest details. “Where were you before here, if you don’t mind me asking?” she added, her tone casual but genuinely curious. It wasn’t just small talk; context mattered, especially when it came to medical baselines.

Without waiting too long for his answer, she reached for the medical tricorder resting nearby. The device felt familiar and reassuring in her hands as she activated it with a soft tap. A low hum filled the space as she began to pass it slowly over him, her movements precise and methodical.

The tricorder emitted a series of soft beeps, each one marking a new stream of data flowing across its display. Areiana’s eyes flicked between the device and her PADD, cross-referencing readings in real time. She adjusted her angle slightly, sweeping the scanner once more across his torso, then up toward his shoulders.

“Hold still just a second,” she murmured, more out of habit than necessity. The tricorder chirped again, a slightly higher tone this time, and she frowned—not in concern, but in concentration—before nodding to herself.

“Vitals look stable,” she said, half to him and half to the data. “Hydration levels are within range… no immediate deficiencies showing up.” She lowered the tricorder briefly, then lifted it again for a final pass, making sure nothing had been missed.

Another soft sequence of beeps followed, and she finally powered the device down with a small, satisfied nod.

“Alright,” Areiana said, glancing back up at him with an easy, professional smile. “Everything looks good.”
