Much later on that night after the party had worn down, all the cake was eaten and the mess had been restored to regulation cleanliness.....

In the Captain’s Quarters a communicator began to chime.....

– GM Amadeus

Freja rolled over in bed, looking at the ceiling briefly. Why did all these priority messages come in the middle of the night? At least she presumed it was such, given that she rarely was interrupted in the middle of the night for much else.

Tapping her communicator, “This is Andressen.” Hopefully, whatever it was, she could handle it without having to pull her uniform back on.

~Freja Andreassen~

“Captain.....sorry to wake you. But we just received a priority 1 VIDEO communique that is marked Captains Eyes Only as well as urgent.” The poor Ensign manning the comms station in the middle of the night said, with a good deal of trepidation in his voice as he struggled to contain his apprehension while emphasising that word. He might be a nameless Ensign, but even he knew, that an urgent late night high priority, secured communication would probably mean that either everything was on fire, or everything needed to be on fire preferably yesterday.

– GM Amadeus

“Right, okay, send the communique down, I presume it is not an active line…there’s not an Admiral waiting to talk to me?” Freja asked, basically making sure she didn’t have to yank on her uniform straight away, but could review the communique and make decisions after. It wasn’t like she slept in something weird, but if she was going to face an Admiral, somehow her tank top and shorts probably wouldn’t fit the bill.

The Ensigns’ voice sounded a little distraught as he said. “Active and short tempered Sir. Routing to your console now Captain.”

A moment later her personal terminal lit up and began to rythmically pulse for her attention.

– GM Amadeus

Nothing new for Freja, she pulled on her uniform in record time, taking a brief second to make sure her pips were on straight and her hair didn’t look slept in. Being a former fighter pilot she learned quickly to always be ready for inspection.

Sitting in front of the terminal, she pressed the button, “This is Captain Andreassen.”

~Freja Andreassen~

A rather stressed looking man sporting Rear Admiral’s pips and a uniform accented in the red of command appeared on the screen. It was RAdm. Jorah Blackwood the new Deputy Fleet Commander (Operations) for Pioneer fleet. He had only been in the job six weeks and already he was looking like he was regretting his ascension.

“Sorry to pull you out of bed. Secure the Channel.” He ordered then reached over to press a button.

“This conversation and anything related to it is classified and may only be disseminated on a need to know basis. Before I go any further I have two questions for you,” he paused as his eyes scrunched a little as he was paying close attention to Freja’s reactions.

Is the Chimera mission ready or can it be made combat effective within 3 hours?”

– GM Amadeus

Freja didn’t blink, the fighter pilot in her perked up at the words ‘combat effective’, but beyond that she merely responded, “We are ready right now, I’ll have to recall any crew from the starbase, but that would take minutes, not hours.”

~Freja Andreassen~

“Good.” Jorah exhaled and a little bit of the tightness in his posture went with the word.

“As far as we can tell about Seventy Six hours ago, Scallax Prime, seventh planet in the Scallax system of the Davios Cluster fell to rebel insurgents. Now while this does happen every now and again. Usually what we would do is we’d dispatch the nearest ship to peacefully negotiate a settlement and return to normalcy or if they necessary utilise a military solution. It’s by far the least ideal method to resolve such grievances but sometimes there isn’t any other choice. Which would USUALLY be the end of such foolishness if the closest ship wasn’t the Cinzano under Captain Voss, she had a mostly Scallaxian crew for some reason instead of a more integrated one and once she entered the system she hasn’t been heard from again. So the ship is presumed lost or worse....defected”.

The Admiral paused a moment as he let Freja have a moment to process this unsettling news before continuing.

“After the rebels seized the Federation administrative compound and imprisoning every Federation Citizen they could get their hands on, they not being satisfied with this then decided to send a formal declaration to the Federation council of their intent to secede from the Federation. In which they broadcasted a manifesto to the entire sector urging the other worlds to do the same while spouting a bunch of inane conspiracies in which Star-Fleet played the villian to all their ills. Now, as you can imagine - the Federation Council went round the ever loving twist at this and instituted a communications black out on Scallax. But of course, the Orion sector being the Orion sector, we’ve got a bunch of disgruntled worlds and miscreants fishing in troubled waters just for the fun of things.”

“In the last 24 hours I have had the Fleet Admiral, four Admirals and more than a dozen Vice Admirals parade through my office for a “chat” and then politely insert their standard replicator issue Star-Fleet boots six inches up my colon. So what I need most right now is a Quick Reaction Force that can deploy on world and you and your marine compliment fit that bill Captain Andreassen.”

“Here are your orders, you are to get underway as soon as you can be ready and arrive at Scallax with all haste. Once you are there, you will rescue or evacuate any and all Federation Citizens still loyal as your primary objective. You will also recover if possible any Star-Fleet assets if possible or destroy them if not. Then if possible restore Scallax to the bosom of the Federation.”

Admiral Blackwood paused to let Freja ask any clarifying questions about the mission.

“I presume you’ll sending me whatever intelligence information you have on file with respect to Scallax and the Cinzano? If the ship has in fact defected, I presume our orders to if possible recover starfleet tech or at worst, destroy, yes?”

“Good, now that you understand the situation. As I understand you are light on medical personnel at the moment, I am assigning you, the Favereau a medical frigate that is already in the Davios cluster which will assist you in the evacuation. They’ve just finished up their current mission and should be able to rendezvous within the hour of your arrival. The Victus however is a dedicated cruiser and will be your extra muscle should you require it. The Victus however won’t be able to reach you for 7 days due to a prior engagement that she can not miss. However you will be in charge of both the Favereau and the Victus Captain.”

“I’m currently pulling in ships from other duties to form a dedicated strike and pacification group but that is going to take some time. I could pull about 20 ships for a day or two but if we have to take Scallax by force command is projecting a significantly longer and more entrenched campaign so in addition to most of my resources being tied up with all the other idiots in the Orion sector it’ll be at least a month before I can arrive with the strike group.”

“However, let me make one thing clear. If the strike group arrives, and federation citizens are still on world. Your mission will have failed and trust me when I say with all the command scrutiny that won’t be good for anyone.” Jorah’s voice and face hardened as he made it clear by his expression, tone and posture that he would NOT look kindly on that eventuality.”

“I’ve just sent you a intelligence brief containing all the files on Scallax, key citizens, the Cinzano, her crew and all the federation and star-fleet installations in system. Do you have any last questions for me?”

“No sir, I’ll get us en route within the hour, if there’s a delay, you’ll hear from me personally.”

“Get it done Captain. We’re counting on you.”

– RAdm Jorah Blackwood

After finishing her conversation with the Admiral, she tapped her badge, =^=Andreassen to Commander Grady, orders came in, any crew off ship currently at the starbase are to return immediately, we are to depart as soon as possible. As much as I hate to rouse everyone from sleep, I want senior staff in the conference room in twenty minutes, I’ll share what I know then.=^=

<insert room for replies>

After finishing with her XO, Freja then accessed the intelligence brief the Admiral sent to start getting her head around the situation. She specifically wanted to start mentally figuring out what kind of fire power they might be facing, particularly before the Victus could catch up to them.
