[LOG: ENSIGN SAMUEL MCINTYRE]
SUBJECT: MORNING SECURITY SWEEP & TACTICAL READINESS
STARDATE: 79124.4
LOCATION: USS CHIMERA (NCC-98730)
The morning on the Chimera didn’t begin with a simulated sunrise. It began with the shift in the deck-plate vibration as the 1618 Cochrane warp core cycled for the morning watch.
McIntyre stepped out of the Marine barracks on Deck 20. He adjusted the fit of his duty tunic—the fabric always felt a fraction too tight across his 203-centimeter frame—and began his rounds. This wasn’t a standard walk-through; it was a tactical survey of a weapon system.
0800 HRS: THE BOTTOM DECKS
He started at Deck 35, the very “sole” of the ship. He checked the Turbolift Hub, noting the distinctive scent of grease from the maintenance facility. He paused at the aft Torpedo Bay 2.
Status: Manual firing stations were locked. The automated loading tracks for the aft tubes were silent for action but primed.
Observation: He ran a massive hand over the casing of a Quantum torpedo. Cold. Solid. Ready.
0820 HRS: THE SECURITY CORE (DECK 29)
McIntyre moved up to the Security Office on Deck 29. He didn’t stop at the Squad Room for the morning coffee. Instead, he checked the Brig’s Level Five forcefields.
Observation: He caught the eye of the Master-at-Arms. “The frequency on Cell 3 is oscillating 0.2 hertz off-center,” McIntyre rumbled, his Edinburgh accent thick in the early hour. “Fix it before the next drill.”
He stepped into the Armory, nodding to the Quartermaster. He checked the seals on the Type IIIc compression phaser rifles. These weren’t the “dust-buster” phasers of a science vessel; these were heavy-duty hardware meant for repelling boarders.
0843 HRS: THE FLIGHT DECKS (DECKS 11–15)
The hum changed here. This was the “Project Sledgehammer” heart. He walked the perimeter of the central hangar.
Location: Jefferies Tube Junction 4-Delta.
Tactical Assessment: He assessed the hatch. Entry point. Four-second breach time with a thermal charge. He noted the magnetic lock on the Type II locker nearby. It was humming at a frequency three decibels higher than spec. He flagged it for Engineering—if internal dampeners failed, that locker would jam, and his teams wouldn’t be able to get to their sidearms.
Observation: He watched a flight crew prepping a squadron of fighters on Deck 13. The signal lights transitioned from blue to yellow. The Chimera wasn’t just a ship; it was a hornet’s nest.
0905 HRS: ENGINEERING & POWER (DECK 18)
He passed through Main Engineering on his way up. He checked the industrial replicator and the machine shop.
Assessment: The Mjolnir was designed to be self-sufficient. He watched a robotic arm milling a spare EPS conduit. It reinforced his confidence in the ship’s endurance. If they were cut off behind enemy lines, the Chimera would keep swinging.
0912 HRS: THE REPORT (DECK 23)
Finally, McIntyre arrived at the Combat Information Center. The double doors hissed open, and he stepped onto the ramp overlooking the sensor ring.
The 3D holo-display of the binary star system bathed his face in a cool, blue light. He saw Captain Andreassen in her raised seat, her silhouette framed by the virtual viewscreen showing the void of space. This was the nerve center.
He moved to the forward horseshoe, his gaze locking onto the Tactical Console.
”Rounds complete, Captain,” McIntyre stated, his voice a disciplined, low-frequency rumble that seemed to vibrate in sync with the ship’s structural integrity field. “Internal security seals on Decks 10 through 15 are within tolerances. I’ve noted a slight lag in the response time of the automated turret arrays in Cargo Bay 2. I’ll be running a manual calibration during the second watch.”
He took his position behind the console. His hands—large enough to make the LCARS interface look like a child’s toy—hovered over the phaser array controls. The morning rounds were over. The watch had begun.

“Acknowledged, please report your findings to your department head or to the XO if you think it’s serious enough, they can alert me if necessary,” Freja replied, turning her attention back to her reports.
