“Come in!” Sarah said from her seat behind her desk. She was looking over some of the latest reports from across the ship.

“How can I help you, Lieutenant....”

Captain Allen - CO

“I was ordered to report to you as soon as I entered the ship, Captain. Apparently a lot of… interesting things are happening.”

Lt JG Jarvan, CSO.

“Oh? What sort of interesting things have you heard about?” Sarah asked as she leaned back in her chair a bit.

Captain Allen - CO

“Nothing in particular. My staff officer simply told me it would be interesting.”

Lt JG Jarvan, CSO.

Sarah just raised her eyebrow, a rather vague and evasive answer. “So, tell me a bit about yourself Lieutenant. Where did you serve prior to the Chimera? What’s your specialty in Science?”

Captain Allen - CO

“I am a Betazoid from, as you’d expect Betazed. Born to an aristocratic family, raised the usual way. Typical as typical can be. I am a Ph D chemist specializing in statistical mechanics. I study anything from stars to nebulas to forensics to biological compounds. I’m therefore a jack of all trades type, as my skillset applies to almost anything. This is partially why I got this job straight of the academy. I was the valedictorian there. I ran the academy labs my senior year.”

“But why this job? What is so special about this one?” Sarah asked as she leaned back in her chair.”

Captain Allen - CO

“The fact I’m a CSO straight out of the academy. That’s what so special. My experience running labs, my scientific prowess and my valedictorian’s cap means I’ve earned it.”

Lt JG, Jarvan, CSO.

Sarah raised an eyebrow. “So Command is desperate enough for officers that they send me a rookie? No one can specialize in everything, and it is the ones that think they can that get good officers killed in the field.”

Standing up she moved around her desk and leaned against it. “I’ll be honest Lieutenant. You are arrogant, and I think you are going to be a bigger liability here on the Chimera then it is worth the effort. There is a lot of difference between running a lab of cadets in a safe environment, and being smart on paper, to being in the field and having to make split second life or death situations.”

Crossing her arms she looked at Jarvan straight in the eyes. “So Lieutenant. Why should I let you into my science labs? Why shouldn’t I put you on the next transport out of here?”

Captain Allen - CO

“Because I managed to prevent a botulism infestation that could’ve killed most of my fellow cadets, something that is considered nearly impossible by most people. That is what I call “practical experience”. Do you really think Starfleet Command would send an “inexperienced” officer to a front-line battleship to command an entire department without some level of assurance, ma’am?”
