Posted by Commander Relann Fell-Drayke (Executive Officer) in CoS Quarters - Moving In (Stop By and Say Hello) Posted by… suppressed (3) by the Post Ghost! 👻 (snip) Relann laughed lightly. “I always love how those things work out,” she said with a grin. “My adoptive parents live on Earth, so that’s where I settled after I fled. My father is Vice-Admiral Jerome Cates and he’s semi-retired these days. He’s actually the first Starfleet officer I encountered at Starbase 87. Poor man couldn’t understand half of what I said to him because it took years for the Universal translator to be able to fully translate my native tongue,” she said with great fondness. “Cates… Cates. I think I met him once. Function on Jupiter Station my Mom dragged me to. Seemed like a decent guy.” Marusk said. “Did you live on Earth long?”

“Nine years, including my time at the Academy,” Relann said with a smile, though she was also pensive. “Jerome actually didn’t like the idea of my joining, but it was one of those rare times I began to talk about life back on my homeworld and I think he began to understand. And I think the part I didn’t fully understand was that it was my way of giving back, of saying thank you for the new life I was given. It could of gone so many different ways after I fled, but I’ve been incredibly fortunate.”

“My mom always said we make our own fortune. I believe that. I doubt fortune, or luck, or fate had anything to do with it. You made the change you needed.”

A serene sort of smile came to her face as she gazed at Mardusk. “Well, you already know a bit about my people’s beliefs, but for us there is a deeper connection to the Universe at large. Something we believe we can feel.” She wasn’t sure this was the conversation to invoke the Spirits, but then again, they weren’t deities. *We believe that there is balance and order in everything, and we can choose to listen and be in harmony, or we can choose the path of greater struggle. Each has its moments of usefulness and growth, and neither is inherently better than the other. But for us, we believe, or rather we used to believe, that we each had a purpose. Do you believe you have a purpose, Mardusk?”

Fell-Drayke, XO

“Sure do.” Mardusk said. “I come from a people who possess a great deal of raw strength, but lack a framework that allows them to use that strength productively. I have always been an oddity of an Orion. I’m big, even for them. I look at my size and strength as a tool. A tool to show other races that Orions aren’t all criminals and slavers. And a tool to show Orions that they can be better. My mom, my dad when he was alive… they strove to be better than the reputation. My purpose is to do the same. Be the best Security officer I can be, help people, protect people, and show the world that our strength can be an asset, not a weapon.”

She smiled and nodded. For a moment Relann was quiet, but then she lifted the data rod with the music he had given her. “Well, I think you’re doing a pretty remarkable job at that so far. I look forward to more of these sorts of conversation, if you’re open to them, and I’ll have to give this music a listen and tell you what I think. But for now, I should probably get out of your way and let you finish unpacking.”

Fell-Drayke, XO

Mardusk smiled and said “I look forward to hearing what you think of the music, and another conversation.” and he stood up and held out his hand. “I’m glad you stopped by. And my door is always open if you need it.”
