The airlock to the outer hull was a sturdy, reinforced chamber, dimly lit with red emergency lights casting an ominous glow. The walls were lined with tool racks and emergency gear, meticulously organized despite the recent chaos. Standing by the control panel were an engineering officer, Lieutenant Saresh, and an operations officer, Ensign Jilara. Both looked up as the Marines approached, their expressions grim.

“Lieutenant River, I strongly advise against going out there,” Saresh said, his voice tense but composed. “We’ve been unable to conduct external scans due to interference from the energy wave. It’s disrupted our sensor arrays and created a feedback loop in the EPS conduits. We can’t guarantee the integrity of the hull or the presence of any additional hazards.”

Ensign Jilara nodded in agreement, her concern evident. “Without those scans, we can’t ensure your safety out there. The structural integrity fields are fluctuating, and we haven’t been able to re-establish stable readings. It’s too risky.”

“That’s part of the job” Peter Sigmundsson stepped forward wearing his own EVA suit. In the large white suit, the already oversized Intelligence officer seemed even larger, the boots giving him the extra inches to go past the seven-foot mark. . He gave the marines a curt nod, this was the one place he could do something useful, gather intelligence.

Lieutenant Saresh Grimaced and nodded finally, “well everything is ready for your departure. We will control the lock systems manually from the two service panels on the other side of the bulkheads. Good luck” with that he and the ensign departed to open the airlocks.

There would be enough time for the marines to get themselves ready and anyone else who was going outside, after which the first of the two bulk head doors slid open slowly as if being pulled open by the manual override.
