OOC: Pasting from the planet thread ..
IC:It was on top of them as their sensor detected it. Warp 9.92 (depending on what STF math you use) about 10 times faster than any ship they have ever seen. (I’m calling bs on that Voyager episode).
Before panic could set in the ship was classified as the “The Great One’s” Vessel. Comparatively small, immensely powerful, and with a commander as modest as he or she was omnipotent.
Shortly after came a call from the planet ..
=^= Jen to Atlantis. Status report. Transporter room stand by for beam up. =^=
- Jen, Xo“Standing by for beam up.” The Transporter room confirmed.
NE Zappy
“Oh great its our friend Wayne Gretzky,” Kelly stated looking at her XO as they stepped off the transporter pad. “This time I will hold him and you knock him out,” she stated clearly irritated that the Great One now decided to show up.
Entering the Bridge, Kelly took the center seat and looked at the comms terminal. “If Wayne hasn’t hailed us, open a hail to him.”
Kelly Bordeaux CO
Sometimes .. she just rambled and Jen was left wondering where that mind was going. It was both a perplexing and amusing thing - in mixed bundles and mixed times - when, after he was off shift Jen would actually look up what it was she was saying. Getting the connection, however, was not so easy at times. He wondered if this was to be so. “Wayne?” he asked quietly as he moved closer to the view screen to get a better view as though an extra 6 meters would make that much difference.
- Jen, XO“The great one,” she nodded at the vessel. “When we first answered the comm be called himself the Great One. I told him that was Wayne Gretzky. He decides that was the name we would call him by. Comms open a hail to that ship,” she replied. “
Kelly Bordeaux CO
The image of Wayne Gretzky appeared on the bridge. It appeared three dimensional and if it every had the occasion to touch an item, it would just pass through something he had no intention of interacting with and if he had the urge to make contact he would be able to.
A rather unimpressive human, Jen thought. He didn’t look ‘great’.
He glanced about eyes flashing momentarily. “It is interesting what you found on the planet. I don’t think you want to experience rapid evolution, so I’m uncertain of the value of your discovery.” It seemed that he had accessed the data they had collected from the planet almost instantanously.
He was inclined to wait for the Captain to answer that. Jen pondered the immediate response - was that the intention, rapid evolution? Did they do that on purpose? But to not good consequences by the look of it.
“Given the lack of value. You are in a very unsafe location..”
GM
That was an understatement. Perhaps the Great One would be able to keep what was ‘unsafe’ at bay. Or help them to simply be gone .. but .. who were these Great Ones? Were they the success story on the rapid evolution and the Darkness the fail? Were they both sides of the same coin? The good here and the bad out there?
- Jen, XO“Because you placed us here,” Kelly snapped before taking a deep breath. The Great One was powerful and the Atlantis had been in the path of the ellipse no different than the occasional bug on the windshield that had been carried along until it was flicked off. Kelly needed to calm her tone before Gretzky decided to take off again and leave then stuck here forever. “What exactly is the Darkness,” she asked no longer able to contain her curiosity.” The Great One would or would not help them return home. Her asking a question would not change their chances of returning home but it might explain what exactly happened here and if the Federation was the cause.
Kelly Bordeaux CO
“I didn’t nothing of the sort, you got pulled into the graviton ellipse and I saved you before it dragged you to the other side of the universe.... although to be far 50,000 light years wasn’t ideal.”
“I think you know what the Darkness is. A disruptive, destructive, race that hyper-evolved themselves to be the dominant force in this region of space. From what I glean from your analysis,” how he knew what their analysis was - was unknown.
“They wouldn’t have made their most recent leap if your Genesis device didn’t add the planet wide regenerative effect. Not that you could have predicted that side effect.”
GM Luke
=^= Accidental consequences does not warrant decades later finger pointing =^= Jen chimed in. The Great One was going to give him a great headache if he kept that up. Why did they wait so long to have a chat with them? 50,000 light years or the other side of the universe may have been the same. Not ideal. He wondered what their consideration of ‘ideal’ was. =^= While we cannot reverse what is, then we may ask, what now? Can we return home with your help? =^= Since they came out declaring that the Atlantis should not be there perhaps they would be amenable to fix that.
- Jen, xOThe Great One shrugged. “I would have sent you back immediately if I had that ability. If your ship could withstand it, which it can’t, I’d tow you… It would still take 5 years.” He shook his head. “Neither of us have that sort of time.”
“The only option that seems available to us, is to replicate the experiment on what happened.”
“By the experiment, you mean the event that caused an entire race to leap ahead generations and become one of the most feared entities in this quadrant. That experiment?” Kelly’s voice was a little thick with sarcasm.
“Your tone gives the implication that I had something to do with it.” He tilted his head down. “Your race has some responsibility for that, while I had none. But back to the issue at hand.”
“The problem is both events would happen here. My guess is this system would be destroyed… no great waste… but there would be a high risk in regard to success and location.” He seemed to ponder the idea.
“I think I could direct the wormhole in the right direction… you’d just have to survive the experience. And replicate this Genesis wave.” Again how he knew that… was unknown.
the Great One.
“You think,” she asked incredulously before giving her XO a side glance.
Kelly Bordeaux CO
“Like shooting us out of a cannon and hoping it gets in the ballpark?” Jen said totally mixing Terran metaphors. “Closer is better than nothing,” he said with a small shrug.
- Jen, XOThe Great One pointed at the XO. “That is a good analogy. But you forgot that you are riding the cannon ball and hoping it doesn’t go boom while you are surfing it.”
“Okay Wayne it’s time to shoot the puck,” Kelly stated. Shooting the puck was more than taking a chance. It was more akin to someone finally making a decision after some lengthy plays to set up the perfect shot. Kelly wasn’t showboating with her decision but probably overthinking it causing her to use the hockey term. “What do you need us to do and when can we start?”
Kelly Bordeaux CO
“Well,” He pondered. “You can get the science stuff to work on the planet and I’ll create a Genesis Device.” He paused, “Well, a better and smaller version of it. I wouldn’t want to start a new planet here of all places.”
GM
“So glad it is that easy to recreate a Gensis Device,” she whispered to her XO. The technology of the Genesis Device was a highly guarded secret. It was humbling in a way to know that what was top secret to one group was common knowledge to another. Kelly was not going to challenge Wayne but it was unsettling slightly.
Kelly Bordeaux CO
“You guys built it.” He snorted as if saying if ‘baby can build a house with Legos he certainly could.’ “And it wouldn’t actually have the same effect, it would be the wave form transmuted in a focused beam. That way i think I can point you in the right direction. Wouldn’t do either of us any favors, if I sent you 50,000 light years further away..”
The use of the word think gave Kelly some trepidation, but it was not like she had a lot of other choices.
‘The science stuff’ Jen mused. That was refreshingly precise as though they were going to just pop in some ingredients and bake up a genesis device, and as they their science people were going to .. start to plant a garden? Trying not to frown too much, Jen said, “Of course not,” he said dryly. “Which science stuff are you speaking of that we can unleash the creative juices of our science people on?”
- Jen, XO“You’ll have to make that experiment on the planet work. Whatever planetwide genetic mutation force they got started. When that goes off. I’ll hit it and your ship with the ‘GENESIS BEAM’” He said with an overly dramatic flare… “Bing, Bam, Boom… you’re back to the Alpha Quadrant… or super evolved bipeds… 70-30 chance. Maybe 60 - 40.”
The Great One.
“Okay will go on the planet, and get the experiment up and running. You stay on the ship and beam us back up when needed.” It was a risky plan. If they did not beam her and the away team up at the right minute, Kelly and company would literally miss the boat and be stranded. Nodding to her XO, Kelly stood up and called her away team to assemble.
==============
Ten minutes laterTapping her comm badge, Kelly called up to her XO on the ship. =/\=So we have set up portable generators to power the containment machine for the three chemicals we found previously. Lt. Robbins is working on formulating a plan of mixture that involves more than just dumping all of it into a vat. How are the plans for the extra shielding coming along on the Atlantis?=/\=
While the Great One didn’t mention it, the trip here caused massive structural damage to the ship that had only been three-quarters repaired so far. If the Great One was going to used a fixed beam the push the Atlantis back home, they needed a little cushion.
Kelly Bordeaux CO
There was a lot of truth to the fact that the Atlantis was far from optimal. Add in the fact that a Quantum Ellipse was a fairly calm environment inside… pulling a ship out of it or in it was what caused all the damage. As far as they knew the Reliant was destroyed during the transport from one point of the galaxy to the other. The hope was that the ship was destroyed by the projection of the Genesis Wave and not from the transport… but they didn’t know… know.
It actually took the Great One longer to indicate he was ready then it took the Atlantis crew to place the power systems. It was actually easier than they thought it would be. After they broke into the computer, all they had to do now was tell it to run the last program in its system.
GM
=/\=Jen=/\= Kelly tapped her comm badge. =/\= I think we are ready down here. How are things spaceside?=/\=
Bordeaux CO
=^=Well, down there isn’t where you want to be when the process starts unless you want to be stuck here.=&= The Great One commented.
=&=Although you will be a super evolved version of whatever races you are. I heard humans for some strange reason that make absolutely no evolutionary sense, turns into a lizard.=^= (for those who saw that ridiculous Voyager episode)
=/\= Okay people let’s go.=/\= Kelly belted out after hearing the Great One’s comment. Following her command to be beamed up, the group found themselves back on the Atlantis.
After they started the process on the planet and returned to the ship. The Great One’s ship stared a huge power up. It somehow projected a shield over the Atlantis that was 10x more powerful than the one the Atlantis could generate itself. There was then a pulsing wave funneling out of front of the ship.
Taking a seat on the bridge, Kelly monitored the systems coming on line calling out to various departments for updates as the Great One’s ship began to power up. “Are they creating an energy bubble around us,” she asked watching the funnel starting to form off bow of the ship.
In a manner not seen before, most ships when extending a shield has to make to orb around them bigger to cover another vessel. In this case it was like someone blew up a ‘shield balloon’ and put the Atlantis inside of it.
It seemed to take a while to power up, but once it reached optimal power the beam shot out like a giant tunnel oriented directly to that Alpha Quadrant. It seemed to impact the ship and the planet at the same time and it was like a fiery explosion about the ship. The blow was like a 100 photon torpedoes....
And when the bright lights dissipated the Atlantis would find itself back in the Alpha Quadrant.
Luke
Kelly blinked rapidly. The light was almost blinding as the Atlantis was propelled down the funnel even with the extra shielding. The sensation made her feel almost dizzy from the vibrations of the ship and the bright lights. As the ship emerged from the funnel, she rubbed her ear. “Anyone else have a ringing,” she asked. It was probably a harmonic from journey turning the Atlantis into a giant tuning fork due to the immense power. It was not painful but more annoying.
When things had toned down and the ringing in Jen’s ears dissipated he said, “According to one of your great prophets,” he said to the Captain, “That was one hell of a ride.” Turning to navigation and science. “Our position?”
- JenKelly Bordeaux CO
The navigator looked at the sensors for a moment, “Updating,” he paused. “Sector 25712, Alpha Quadrant, 2 light years from the Ceti Alpha system.” That was nowhere near to the point from where they started this, but it was about 50,000 light years closer than where they were about 5 minutes ago.
GM
Jen lightly touched one of his antennae. The vibrations were not pleasing to it. “Once engineering confirms we are not going to fall apart when we try to move set course for the nearest Starbase.”
He looked to the engineering station. “Ship status? How did we do on our .. ride?”
- Jen, xOOOC: Bump .. Gene
ooc: I responded to this.... I guess I didn’t hit send
The flashing red and yellow lights on the damage control board were numerous but not anywhere as bad as when they rode a graviton ellipse 50,000 light years. They had weeks of damage repair after that and they weren’t nearly fixed. Add the additional damage they would have to sit in a space dock for months to be what Star-fleet would consider ship shape.
The ensign at communications, which managed damage control, spoke up. “We.. are.. stable. All key systems report that are ready to answer all bells.” which was old school naval euphonism that they were able to answer any given order.
OOC: thank you everyone, I know this dragged on, we had a couple of simultaneous side sims and the new GM is getting everyone started.
Have a good on.
