A nervous Ensign hesitantly tapped the comm panel. It was his first day on the bridge, and of course it was the day that a scary looking Admiral would call. Not his office, the Admiral himself!

=^=Ensign Newguy to Captain Legen. Admiral Ramsay on Starbase 151 would like to speak with you. He says it is urgent.=^=

  • Big Gorilla

Captain Orvos Legen was already en route to the bridge when call came through his communicator. The turbolift doors opened and he stepped onto the bridge. Crew members were busying themselves at their respective stations. His eyes met the Ensign’s and he pointed to his ready room. “Patch him in there,” he said as he made no hesitation in stride as he moved into his personal office.

-Captain Orvos Legen, CO

At the Tactical station, Dashel had set up the controls to how he liked them. He checked the shields, the phaser banks, the torpedoes, it seemed that all of them were ok. He watched as the Captain entered and crossed the bridge on his way to his ready room. Things were calm at the moment, but given the hail reported by the Ensign to the Captain, he doubted they would remain calm for long, in his experience, it wouldn’t be long before the bananas would be hitting the fan.

Behind the CO followed the leggy athletic redhead XO, exiting the lift. Stormy eyes scanned the bridge. They were still docked of course. Most were still rotated off the ship for R&R or taking care of things ashore. Her gaze landed on Jamison, full of knowing. Admirals didn’t tend to make social calls. It smelled like a orders coming down. And there was no telling how hairy it was going to be.

Finishing her trip to the center seats, she relieved the Ops Chief who re-took their station. “Ensign Newguy.”

The ensign turned to regard her. “Ma’am?”

“Notify all parties on leave or ashore to be on the alert for departure recall.”

The ensign nodded. “Aye, Commander.” Turning back to his station he intoned the orders as he laid them in.

Serena turned her attention to the Ops Chief. “Chief Pusher, let’s make sure we’re loaded up on deuterium and the quartermaster has all supplies aboard. I have a feeling we’re going to need to move quickly. And let’s make sure any personnel transfers are taken care of.”

“Ay-firm. Checking now and bringing the cat in.”

Serena smiled briefly, but put it away just as quick, then dropped into the center seat. Come on, come on, come on. Maybe she was just being paranoid, but … if they had somewhere to be…

Lt. Cmdr. Stone, Executive Officer

Dashel racked his brain for the name of the XO, without success, so instead he said, “Lieutenant Commander, phaser banks and deflector shields are all ready, and we have a full set of torpedoes.”

Jamison, Dash Jamison, Son of Morak

=^=Ensign Checkem to the Bridge. We’ve got a situation down here at the docking port. There is a line of pallets with transfer documents sending them to the Athena, but I’m not showing any open requisitions coming from the ship. They are signed by....=^= There is the sounds of some shuffling and muffled talking over the line. =^=Here we go. Transfer orders are signed by an Admiral Ramsay. Want me to turn them away?=^=

  • Big Gorilla

Serena listened then found her mouth screwing into an odd shape. Admiral Ramsay was just on the line for the CO, and presumably talking things over in the ready room. It only confirmed the idea they were about to depart, and it seemed like in a hurry. =^=Negative, Ensign Checkem. Bring it all in, park it where you can. if you have to, we can probably store some of it in the common spaces or in the unused Flea’tan Jump Core slot. Grab any hands or loader drones you need to make it quick. =^=

With that, she turned her attention to Ensign Newguy. “Mister Newguy, update the recall status. All crew are recalled to the Athena effective immediately, urgent priority.”

Lt. Cmdr. Stone, Executive Officer

=^=I don’t think it’s going to be an if commander. Once I have the final tally, we’ll send it up to the bridge. Checkem out.=^=

“Understood Commander.” Ensign Newguy said as he quickly updated the recall status and sent the message to all of the crew.

Meanwhile in the Ready Room....

A grizzled old Admiral was already waiting on the screen, Admiral Ramsay. In the background you could see that his office overlooked some sort of command center, with some large detailed maps up on the large screens in the room. There was a planet on the screen behind his left shoulder, the name Wer Beta III could just be made out.

=^=Captain Legen, good. We have a critical situation, and I’m tasking the Athena for support. Are you familiar with Wer Beta III?=^= He asked before just continuing on with a with a wave of his hand. =^=Probably not. They have only in the last 100 years achieved warp travel. Only recently have they started their application to the Federation.=^=

With a few taps off screen, the Admiral’s image shrinks to the top left corner of the screen as an image of the planet shows up on the screen. There are several callouts popping up on the screen describing the planet.

=^=The planet had a temperate climate, and had a booming agricultural economy. However, recently they have been ravaged by storms of increasing strength. They are experiencing major flooding along their coastline. And as part of our ongoing negotiations, have requested Federation emergency aid.=^=

The planet disappears from the screen as Admiral Ramsay’s picture returns to the full screen.

=^=I have already routed supplies to your ship which should arrive within the hour. The usual disaster relief supplies, such as medicine, food, and shelters. Deliver them to Wer Beta III, assist with their recovery efforts, and try to find out what has caused the sudden climate shift.=^=

=^=When you reach the planet, contact Ambassador T’Lorin. She is leading the Federation delegation that is planetside as part of the application process. Additionally Commander Hargreave is ranking Starfleet officer on site. My staff have transmitted any further information we already have on the planet and the population.=^=

Looking off screen again the Admiral just shooed away someone who must have entered his office.

=^=I’m sorry to cut this short Captain, but I have 12 other escalating situations we are dealing with. Do you have any questions I can answer quickly?=^=

  • Big Gorilla

Orvos had spent most of time listening and nodding at appropriate moments. The whole situation seemed quite rushed. And given the Admiral seemed to have his hands busy with other things, there was only question that stuck out to him. “Is this a strictly Athena mission, or are there other ships you’re sending? If it’s a small fleet, I’d like to know if we’re in charge, or…?” he trailed off, allowing the admiral room to answer.

-Captain Orvos Legen, CO

Ramsay sighed. =^=Right now the Athena is the only Starfleet ship I am able to task to this situation. I do have two Federation colony ships being loaded up with additional supplies, but they will be at least a week behind you by the time you arrive. Ambassador T’Lorin was not clear on the level of support that the planet is needing at this moment. I need the Athena on scene to determine the level of the emergency, and if needed, additional ships will be tasked to assist.=^=

=^=And unless the situation escalates dramatically, as the first ship tasked to this mission, you will have operational command of any other ships assigned.=^=

Crossing his arms, Ramsay leaned on his desk and looked directly at Captain Legen. =^=Any other questions Captain?=^=

Orvos shook his head. “No Admiral, that does it for me. We’ll be underway shortly.” The admiral clearly had a lot going on. Any other questions he might have had could be stowed away for his crew to figure out.

=^=Very good Captain. The supply pallets should already be at your ship. If you need any other provisions, contact Cmdr. Bellin on my staff. He can arrange as required.=^= Ramsay said leaning back for a second in his chair, before something off screen caught his eye. A note of weariness could be seen in his eyes for a second before he sat up straight again.

=^=Godspeed Captain. I look forward to hearing the assessment of the situation once you reach the planet. Ramsay out.=^=

Harrison had already returned from leave when the call went out for the crew to return. After stowing his gear, he caught the nearest turbolift to the bridge. . . . .

The new intel officer stepped onto the bridge and made his way to the center seat. “New orders, I assume, Lt. Commander Stone? What are we up against this time?”

Lt. Cmdr. Harrison Callahan
CIO-USS Athena

Serena glanced up as a shadow fell over her. A faint smile flickered over her lips and she nodded. “Captain Legen is on the line with Admiral Ramsey in his ready room as we speak, with a boatload of supplies earmarked for the Athena, outside of our usual compliment. Seems like a rush job, last minute. I presume we’ll know more in a few minutes, though we might not get briefed until we’re underway.” She was willing to bet Callahan could probably find out what was going on through back channels and scuttlebutt almost as fast if he put his mind to it. But for now, the answers would come soon enough.

Lt. Cmdr. Stone, Executive Officer

“We’ll handle whatever is thrown at us,” Dash said confidently from the tactical station, “did you want me to supervise the loading, Lieutenant Commander Stone, or remain here?”

Jamison, Dash Jamison, Son of Morak
CTO, USS Athena

Serena glanced over at the tactical officer, raising an eyebrow at the overly formal address. One typically did not use a full rank in common address, save to remind them specifically as a way to remind them of the disparity in rank or to ‘pull rank.’ A junior grade lieutenant would simply be addressed as ‘lieutenant’ or a lieutenant commander simply as ‘commander.’ Perhaps he wasn’t quite comfortable yet on the Athena, and was using formality as a cover? After all, she’d been similarly uncomfortable coming to the Athena. Her time on the U.S.S. Valkyrie had hardened her quite a bit. Coming to the Athena, especially mid-mission had been a little bit of a culture shock. It had taken a while for her to relax and ease down instead of being tight as a snare drum. “Are you volunteering, Mister Jamison?”

Had he upset her Dash wondered, he caught the raised eyebrow, and the Mister Jamison and he recalled the last time he had caught such a look from a Lieutenant Commander, on that occasion, it was a Vulcan, and on that occasion Dash had referred to him as Commander. As well as the raised eyebrow, the Vulcan proceeded to dress him down at length in front of the crew. Dash decided on that occasion to refer to people strictly by the number of pips on their shoulder, but he was nothing, if not adaptable.

“Yes, happy to volunteer, Commander,” Dash replied, “sounds like Checkem could be feeling stretched, and I’m not sure we should be upsetting Admiral Ramsay.”

“As long as all tactical systems are in the green and our full complement of munitions are on hand, stowed, and secure. It’s going to be a while before we have anything to shoot at.” She’d been in his position plenty of times. Itching for something to do and being stuck at dock was possibly the worst, with so many other ships in the fleet around and the starbase’s own defenses. It was just about as safe as could be.

Serena tossed her head toward the turbolift.

Lt. Cmdr. Stone, Executive Officer

He checked out the readings on his station again, “Yes, all tactical systems ready, and all munitions are accounted for, Commander,” he told her, before leaving the bridge and heading towards the cargo bay.

“More supplies? More than what is normally alotted for our missions? Interesting to say the last,” Harrison added. “Any idea of what that’s all about?”

Before the XO could speculate, the CIO took a seat at an empty console and opened up the supplies manifest. When he didn’t immediately see what he was looking for, he tapped in his security clearance code. That should allow him to dig a little deeper. . .

When he tapped in his security code, there was a flash on the screen, clearing any redactions to show one of the full shipping manifests.

It was not long after when the lift doors opened and a woman in medical blue stepped out. She had braided strawberry blonde hair wrapped in a sort of wreath around her head. Her black eyes scanned the bridge and stopped on the Lt Cmdr in the center chair. Must be Stone, she thought. Her eyes met the other woman’s, “Lt. Cmdr Atoded reporting, Cmdr. Permission to come aboard?”

Lt. Cmdr. Atoded, Counsellor

The sound of crew coming and going about the bridge, especially now wasn’t unusual. Commander Stone didn’t look up immediately but once there was movement to her left, more forward, she did. The woman there she recognized from her personnel file, one of the transfers to senior staff for the Athena. And Janna’s replacement. Serena shifted to her feet and smoothed down the muted burgandy uniform. “Permission granted,” she said, offering a hand in greeting. “Commander Serena Stone. You are… Lieutenant Commander Brenna Atoded, correct?”

Brenna smiled and shook her hand crispy, “Correct, Cmdr.”

The formalities gave Serena a moment to gather her bearings. Things were happening fast, as was true of any Naval ship in a rush. But more than that, meeting the woman replacing her friend was… bittersweet. Someone new was always of interest, but the decision to leave, and the need for someone else had it’s echoes. “Seems you’ve arrived just in time, Counselor. It seems we’ll be getting under way very soon. I’m sure you’ll want to speak with the Captain as soon as he’s don with his communique with Admiral Ramsay/”

Cmdr. Stone, Executive Officer

“When he’s available,” she said. Brenna was about to ask where she could be useful when the ready room door opened.

Captain Orvos Legen finally emerged from the ready room, and stepped towards the center seat. Turning to Meadows, he spoke. “Helm, plot a course to Wer Beta III. Once we’ve confirmed all designated personnel and supplies are aboard, engage at best speed.”

He then turned to his first officer who stood next to the command chair. He took note of the newly arrived counselor as well. “Ah, you’re just in time. Welcome!” he said to the betazoid officer.

Brenna raised her chin slightly in a nod of respect, “Thank you Captain.”

To Serena he quickly said, “New orders. Disaster relief. Supplies are en route and should be onboarded within the hour. Can you have all department heads and yourself in the conference room in 30 minutes?”

-Captain Orvos Legen, CO

She had just been about to suggest their orders were probably going to be some kind of disaster relief, just from the context clues in the supplies and urgency of the moment. Orvos stepped out onto the bridge forestalling her thoughts, only for him to confirm that very thing moments later. At his question, she nodded. “That I can.” A small, pleased smile broke across her face, just for a moment, pleased the observation s panned out. She turned her attention to the Betazoid. “Looks like you might be getting thrown into the deep end.”

“It wouldn’t be the first time. Perhaps that gives me just enough time for a coffee,” she mused. It had been a long flight, and she had expected to not be meeting the Athena for two more days. Coffee would be helpful.

Stone turned her attention back to Orvos. “Anything else you need from me before I start rounding up the seniors?”

Cmdr. Stone, Executive Officer

Lt. Cmdr. Atoded, Counsellor

Orvos shook his head. “Not at this time. I’ll be in shortly. Need to reshuffle some things now in the schedule on top of getting my head on straight so to speak.” He grinned, gave a brief nod before turning right around and marched straight back to the ready room.

-Captain Orvos Legen, CO

Serena nodded as the Captain made for the ready room again. Her attention turned toward the new Counselor. “Apologies. Thins are…” She shook her head with a tilt, gesturing vaguely around the bridge. “It’ll settle down soon. And…” She sighed. “I don’t know if there’s more there. Your predecessor, Ms. Kingston and he were close. She and I were too, but they were…” More. “… connected. So… it’s an adjustment. For a lot of us. But I think he’s got it the worst right now. But being El-Aurian, he’s weathereda lot over the centuries. This too will pass, I’m sure.” The readhead shrugged one shoulder.

Brenna nodded, “I’m sure. And I’m glad to know there was a good relationship there. It is always difficult even if the circumstances are good.”

“Have you made it to your quarters yet, or had a chance to swing by your department?”

Cmdr. Stone, Executive Officer

“Just my quarters, Cmdr. Just long enough to drop my boys off. Given the organized chaos at the airlock and the sudden change in departure, I thought it best to report immediately,” Atoded said.

Lt. Cmdr. Atoded, Counsellor

Serena nodded. “Good.” Then, her expression turned puzzled, and with it too a sense of mild alarm. A change in the narrative and expectations. “Boys. I didn’t see any mntion of family for any of the new seniors. We can get you re-settled into family quarters quickly.”

Cmdr. Stone, Executive Officer

Brenna laughed, “Well I do think of them as family, but we are fine in the quarters assigned. My boys are my dogs, Cmdr. Three Huskies. They are working animals.”

Lt. Cmdr. Atoded, Counsellor

  • Big Gorilla

Harrison had been standing quietly and waing patiently at the interaction between the CO, XO, and counselor.

He turned to the counselor and introduced himself. “Commander, we weren’t introduced. I’m Lt. Cmdr. Callahan, Intel. Welcome aboard.”

Brenna smiled and turned to face him as well. “Lt Cmdr Brenna Atoded. Thank you, Cmdr. I look forward to working with you.”

Lt. Cmdr. Atoded, Counsellor

Turning back to Stone, he added, “I’ll be in the conference room finding out what I can about our destination.”

TCIO pivoted and made his way to the conference room.

Lt. Cmdr. Harrison Callahan
CIO-USS Athena

Stone turned her attention back to Atoded. “Sounds like a trio of awooligans,” she said, breaking into a small smile. “Huskies are an energetic bunch. We have some space on the ship to stretch their legs, and I’m sure the holosuites would be a boon. Though with the influx of supplies space is tighter than usual and we don’t have the entertainment modules slotted. So as much as we can offer in this configuration, it’s gonna be a little rough for a bit.” She paused for a moment. “Working, eh? Service animals, or do you use them with patients?”

Cmdr. Stone, Executive Officer

“They can be,” Atoded said with a grin. “They are working dogs. They each have various tasks they are trained to do. Therapy is one of them.”

Lt. Cmdr. Atoded, Counsellor

Commander Stone nodded. “Noted.” Stormy eyes scanned the bridge for the moment, gathering her thoughts. “Captain’s busy,” she mused, chewing her lower lip. The transport scrubbers probably meant everything was fine for the new Counselor, and the clock was ticking, now, toward the briefing and their departure. “Best if you do what you can for now to get settled in. Briefing in just under thirty. After that I’m sure it’s going to be a bit of a scramble. Best to get settled in as best you can. Is there anything I can do to facilitate?”

Cmdr. Stone, Executive Officer

“Thank you, Cmdr., but I’ll be fine. It will probably take Ops a bit with all the extra cargo to deliver my belongings. I can replicate what I need until then.” Brenna smiled. She was used to being tossed into the rapids. “I think I will see about a cup of coffee before the meeting. Thank you, again, Cmdr.”

After being dismissed Atoded headed off the bridge.

Lt. Cmdr. Atoded, Counsellor

Serena nodded. “Very well. Welcome to the Athena Counselor. See you soon, then.” The redhead turned and headed back to the center seat. Cargo was being looked after by senior staff. Crew was rapidly returning. Everything seemed green across the board. There wasn’t much for her to do in person that wouldn’t make her a nuisance. For now, until the briefing, all there was left was to overwatch and put out any new fires and the best place for that was in the very nerve center of the ship. So, she sat, and began pulling up messages, notifications, and status reports on the arm consoles which she shunted to floating holographic displays in front of her
