Dashel reached the Counselling Suite on Deck 11, walking unhurriedly, bat’leth in hand, baldric over his uniform. His expression was calm, even though this was one of his least favourite bits. He knew it had to be done, but in his estimation, none of the Counsellors matched up with the example set by his mother, Anita, and his adopted Klingon father, Morak. He recognised the need for it, and he would do it, it just didn’t mean he’d like it.

“Dashel Jamison, CTO,” he announced when he entered the suite of offices, his eyes drifted to his bat’leth, “don’t worry, I won’t use this on the furniture or the Counsellor. I believe it is Lieutenant Commander Atoded that I’m seeing.”

The yeoman sitting at the small desk nodded, “It is, she’ll be right out.” Pressing a control on her desk she alerted Atoded to the arrival of her next appointment.

“Dash!” a young voice drew his attention. Dashel looked, it was the young boy he met in sickbay earlier.

“Oh, hi Tal,” Dashel replied, “you here with your mum?”

“Yeah, she’s in there at the moment,” Tal paused and said, “it’s my birthday next week, do you think …”

Dashel looked at the boy as he sat, adjusting his bat’leth. “Think what?”

“That you could come to our quarters and help me celebrate it? It would be fun!” Tal said enthusiastically.

“Wouldn’t you rather have your friends at your party with you?” Dashel asked gently.

“Yes, but … you too,” Tal said, “and can you …” His eyes fell on the bat’leth … “bring the bat’death with you. It’d be really cool. Mum says I’m too young to use swords yet, but if you bring it, I can look at it with my friends, and you can show us how to use the bat’death!” Tal’s eyes danced with excitement as he spoke.

The door to the office slid open with the pneumatic hiss. Atoded stood in the doorway and waited quietly, letting Jamison finish his conversation. Her lips quirked slightly at the child’s mispronunciation of bat’leth or bat’death. However, she had to admit that it was an accurate description.

“I will see, Tal,” Dash said, “I think that’s the Counsellor for me.” The boy nodded and returned to the padd he had been reading.

When they had finished their conversation, she strode over. “Lt. Jamison? I’m Counselor Atoded. It’s nice to meet you. Are you ready to come in?”

“I am,” Dash replied, “and please call me Dash or Dashel. A suite of offices? And a yeoman? Both my mum and Morak would have been impressed.” He picked up his bat’leth and said, “it’ll be going into my quarters and staying there.”

“I’m Brenna. It’s nice to meet you Dash.” She glanced once at the bat’leth with an appraising eye. It was a fine weapon. “Well you are welcome to bring it in. Come in and have a seat.” The office was bear except for a selection of seating, a desk, and a crate that had yet to be unpacked. Behind the desk were three large pillows and on each was a Husky. All three heads lifted to look and then went back to resting on paws with eyes closed.

“Would you like something to drink?”

Dash followed her in, leaned the bat’leth against the wall, near the crate.

“Huskies! Three of them!” Dash said, “Jimmy would have loved this, he was my brother, big fan of huskies.”

“A prune flavoured iced tea, the ship computer has the program, thanks Counsellor” Dash replied as he sat in a chair, “thanks for seeing me.”

“You can pet them if you like,” Brenna offered. “qavan!(meaning “I salute you”),” she said to the dogs who then got up and approached Dash calmly. She moved over to the replicator and ordered the prune flavored iced tea and brought it over to him. “Here you go.”
