Elaine winced, “Fatigue, that is a tough first symptom to get for sure. It’s wonderful you have been able to recognise when to get checked out. I sometimes feel like I need a PA to go and chase down some humanoids that try to tough symptoms out before finally asking for my help when acting tough didn’t work out so well.” she thought of Ensign Bailey, smiling and telling her she was fine before she collapsed treating a patient half an hour later, then shook the memory out wondering why her face kept appearing so frequently today.

“I would rather you show up into my Sickbay on a false alarm than on a crisis one.” As she spoke, behind her where she couldn’t see a small dog emerged and trotted towards them.

“Oh, chasing me down won’t be a problem.” Ensign Donivas chuckled. “I don’t think I’ve devolved into hypochondriac territory, but I’m sure I’ll visit sickbay more than your average Starfleet Officer.” He flashed a friendly grin. “For the excellent company, if nothing else.”

“I think I’m satisfied with that, any questions for me or did you have any questions for me at all?”

“I’d like to have a medical tricorder issued for my personal use, if you don’t mind.” Khiryn added in a more serious tone. “Part of detecting flare ups early involves frequent scans. I can have the readings sent to my file, so you’ll have access to everything.”

“That can be arranged,” Elaine nodded, “I can get one of the Engineers to rig one up for you, it’s a good idea,”

“Also…” He paused for a moment. “Its not urgent… but I’ve become refractory to the more common medications used to treat my flare ups. If you have free time, it might be wise to look into alternative treatments… just in case my condition becomes serious. I’d be more than happy to collaborate with you and volunteer for additional scans if that would help.”

Just then a little ball of fluff with a nose and a wagging tail jumped up on the bio bed next to Khiryn.

Khiryn was surprised as the animal jumped up in the bed next to him. He leaned back and took it in. I normally prefer feline variants… they are more independent. that didnt stop hik from offering the canine a pet before the CMO snatched it away.

“Enj,” Elaine jumped, quickly grabbing the dog and putting him back down on the floor, “Sorry about that, he knows better than to jump on bio beds without permission,” seeming just like a scolded schoolboy, the dog hung his head on his paws and lay on the floor.

“Anyway, you want to look into alternative treatments? I’ll be happy to help. I’m still fairly new on board myself but once I’m all settled in, I’ll be sure to pull the books out and we can set up some appointments to test things out. Is there anything you’ve already been looking into and tried?”

Ensign Donivas shook his head. “Its not urgent. Its just that traditional treatments were losing effectivness… and the Doctors seemed a little nervous during my last flare up.” The Akaali shrugged. “I figured its be a good idea to try and devise some strategies early… rather than waiting until my life is in jeopardy.”

“I’ve heard having your life in jeopardy isn’t that much fun,” the doctor said, her eyes twinkling humorously.

“I can check back in with you in a few weeks or so… once we both have a chance to settle in.”

“That sounds good, I’ll pre-set a reminder for us to get in touch in a couple of weeks.” she said, typing away into her PADD again. She didn’t know about Donivas, but she knew how absorbed she could get into her work, and she knew before she saw him again that she would be researching as much as she could.

“Is there anything else, before I start my scans?”

“Scan away, Doctor.” The Akaali replied with a faint grin. “But if you make any amazing discoveries based on these scans, I’m going to want an honorable mention in whatever paper you write.”

“I’ll make sure of it,” Elaine smiled, “If it wins an award you can collect it for me,”

She moved over and started the scans.

OOC: What do the scans come back with?

OOC: It confirms his sedentary lifestyle. As he said, he doesn’t get nearly enough physical activity.

The scan indicates that his cortisol is a little high, but it’s not a dangerous “sign” in and of itself. But there are indications that his cortisol has been at these levels for some time, indicating he’s been under stress.

There are also subtle signs of adrenaline fatigue on his system, which can also be another indicator of recent stress.

His immune system seems to be seriously suppressed, but when compared to his file it appears to be in the lower third of what is considered average for Khiryn.

There are also indications that his paracortex has been active within the last couple months. Since he is not a telepath it is usually an indicator that he’s come in contact with a large number of telepaths… or a few very strong ones. Slight psychic “calluses”, if you will.

“Well good news, I’m happy to sign you off for duty. Bad news it comes with conditions.” She spoke as she tapped away into her PADD, summarising her observations and adding it into his medical file for his record. No flags but it was information she wanted to store for later. Especially if she was going to work on finding an alternative treatment that might work on the Ensign she wanted a control to compare her readings too.

“First after you’ve finished checking in, I want you to take some time to yourself, relax and get some good sleep. Maybe do some excerise that can set off some good endorphins in your brain which. If this means you have to take a few days before you start, then you can tell the Chief of Science it’s doctor’s orders and if they have an issue they can take it up with me. You are showing signs that could possibly be early indicators of stress and fatigue, at the moment it isn’t anything I’d consider serious especially given you’ve only just come aboard, and it is stressful moving onto a new ship. So, take the time to look after yourself, especially given your medical history.”

“Second is I want you to come back next week for some more scans, I want to get a ‘control’ so to speak before we look at alternate treatments for you. It will also provide me the opportunity to recheck your stress and fatigue indicators and make sure they are at a normal level.”

She quirked her head to side a curious expression on her face, “Have you been to Betazoid recently?”
