With brisk efficiency, Ensign Donivas made his way to Sickbay 1. He was excited about getting started onboard the Athena, which meant he had a number of formalities to take care of first.

Although a formal requirement, these tasks were not unimportant. For someone with a chronic condition like Khiryn, a medical check-in was important. Even though he had not had a flare up in quite some time, he knew it could easily happen if he got distracted with work and forgot to take care of himself.

The medical department was an essential failsafe for such situations.

The newly reported Science Officer walked into Sickbay 1, and was quickly greeted by the intake nurse. “Hello.. . I’m Ensign Donivas and I’d like to complete my intake screening with the CMO… or at least schedule a time to do so.”

OOC: I know the CMO is new as well so I flagged the whole medical dept. I can clear the tags on future posts to minimize unnecessary alerts.

Ensign Khiryn Donivas - Science Officer - U.S.S. Athena

IC: “Welcome aboard Ensign Donivas,” The nurse greeted “Your timing is impeccable, the CMO arrived only a few minutes ago and is just in her office now uhhh,” The nurse paused, “She has only just arrived on board as well so I might just stick my head in her office and ask her if she would like to take you now or if she would rather just get settled first.”

Round and a bit of a dumpling shape, the nurse waddled more than walked off to the CMO’s office. For a few minutes Ensign Donivas was left where the intake nurse had been before they emerged out of the office with a young woman in her traditional medical blue and a white doctors coat over the top. She had a youthful look to her like she could be no older that Donivas was. She walked with a sort of grace that seemed to be contradicted by some of her hair rebelling the bun she had put it in and dropping down almost framing her face perfectly.

“Doctor Janvier this is the new Ensign uhhh… Ensign… Donivan,” The nurse introduced before waddling off to attend to the needs of the next patient who had just come through the doors of Sickbay.

The CMO looked after the nurse for a second like she wanted to say something before quickly focusing her attention on the man in front of her, “Welcome aboard Ensign Donivan, it’s a pleasure to meet you. And please, if it makes you feel more comfortable, you are welcome to call me Elaine,”

Lt. Janvier, CMO

Khiryn smiled at the charge nurse as she walked away. She seemed nice enough, but was more focused on the business of running sickbay rather than her bedside manner. I can’t really blame her… I hated the customer service aspect as well.

He shifted his focus to the new CMO. “Its Ensign Doniva_s_, actually. But please call me Khiryn.”

Ensign Donivas was an Akaali, with a medium skin tone and defined anterior crests located on either side of his forehead. The young Scientist was about the same height as the CMO and had a spare build, a prominent nose, and a mop of dark brown hair on his head. Khiryn also wore a pair of glasses.

Ensign Donivas took in Lt Janvier’s appearance. He guessed she was about the same age he was. He originally thought she was a bit younger, but figured she had to have at least a couple years under her belt to have been promoted to Lieutenant.

She also looked vaguely familiar. Maybe I saw her on the station in passing before checking in on the Athena?

“How do you want to do this, Elaine? I have about half a million things on my to-do list as a new check in… and I can only imagine a newly arrived department head has a few million more.” He wasn’t trying to rush the process… merely trying to accommodate her schedule if she had more pressing issues to attend to.

Ensign Khiryn Donivas - Science Officer - U.S.S. Athena

Like Donivas Janvier had also had that vague sense she had seen him somewhere before as well. Having arrived around the same time she figured there was every chance she had seen him in passing although she couldn’t think of where that might have been.

Elaine let out a soft laugh, “Indeed there is, but I’ve finished checking in. And I haven’t started on the millions of other things that I need to do so you will make the perfect excuse to procrastinate before I make myself a coffee and wade into an ocean of paperwork.”

Khiryn chuckled… he had similar feelings about routine reports, even if they could have important information from time to time.

“If you want to take a seat on one of the biobeds Khyrin, we can get started on your exam. I don’t want to hold you up on your half a million things to do,” her green eyes sparkled humourously.

That is a sound plan if ever I heard one.” The Ensign replied with a smile as he sat on the nearest biobed.

“I like to keep them pretty straightforward. I’ll do a full examination but if there is anything you think I should know or areas you want me to focus more on let me know. I’ll probably ask you a few questions and then once I’m satisfied, I’ll sign you off and you can check off your half a million and get onto your other 499,999 tasks left to complete”

Lt. Janvier, CMO

The science officer considered his words for a couple seconds. “I’m fairly healthy overall, although you’ll probabaly tell me I need more physical exercise.” As a dedicated academic he had led a fairly sedentary life.

Elaine smiled, “Since you already know what I’m going to say I’ll save energy and not say it.”

“The biggest concern you’re likely to see is the Cyanate Syndrome.” It was a genetic autoimmune disease that many Akaali were born with. “I’ve been successful at managing that with diet and lifestyle for the last year or so, but flare ups are always a possibility.”

OOC: From my character profile for ease of reference.

“Medical Notes:
Cyanate Syndrome:
-Many Akaali, especially those whose ancestors lived on the western continent, have a mild autoimmune disease known as Cyanate Syndrome. Its origin is traced back to tetracyanate 622 poisoning on Akaali over two centuries ago, and the harsh chemicals the government used to treat the water afterward.
-It can present as fatigue, mottled patches of skin, and even joint pain and stiffness if it is allowed to continue. Khiryn typically manages the disease with diet, exercise, and lifestyle, but it can flare up when he works too hard.
-Treatment is sometimes necessary, but he avoids this because he’s already become refractory to a few common medications.”

Ensign Khiryn Donivas - Science Officer - U.S.S. Athena

OOC: Thank you.

“Ah yes, I am familiar with the Cyanate Syndrome but only from medical text books from the Academy.” She smiled her eyes twinkling with a gentle kind of amusement, “I’ve been all across the galaxy and somehow you are the first Akaali I’ve had under my care.”

“Do you present with all the symptoms of the Syndrome or just some of them? Does it present itself in any particular order? Or does it trigger all at the same time when it does flare up?”

Lt. Janvier, CMO

Khiryn nodded. “Fatigue is always first… and it has historically been hard for me to notice it when compared to the normal weariness that comes with hard work and long hours. That meant I often wouldn’t realize I was having a flare up until the patches of mottled skin started showing up. I’ve only had three instances as an adult here the joint pain became an issue… but the most recent was a few years ago as I prepared for finals at the academy.”

Ensign Donivas knew she’d see all that in his files, so he wasn’t shy about sharing the information. Especially when he’d need the help of Elaine and her team to help him manage his condition.

As he spoke, Elaine made notations into his files and smiled quietly appreciating how factual he was being.

“The further along the flare ups last… the more symptoms that show up… the harder it is to recover. My success over these last few years has come from recognizing when I’m starting to feel run down. I get checked out by medical early and try to modify my routine to put less stress in my body.”

Ensign Khiryn Donivas - Science Officer - U.S.S. Athena

Elaine winced, “Fatigue, that is a tough first symptom to get for sure. It’s wonderful you have been able to recognise when to get checked out. I sometimes feel like I need a PA to go and chase down some humanoids that try to tough symptoms out before finally asking for my help when acting tough didn’t work out so well.” she thought of Ensign Bailey, smiling and telling her she was fine before she collapsed treating a patient half an hour later, then shook the memory out wondering why her face kept appearing so frequently today.

“I would rather you show up into my Sickbay on a false alarm than on a crisis one.” As she spoke, behind her where she couldn’t see a small dog emerged and trotted towards them.

“Oh, chasing me down won’t be a problem.” Ensign Donivas chuckled. “I don’t think I’ve devolved into hypochondriac territory, but I’m sure I’ll visit sickbay more than your average Starfleet Officer.” He flashed a friendly grin. “For the excellent company, if nothing else.”

“I think I’m satisfied with that, any questions for me or did you have any questions for me at all?”

Lt. Janvier, CMO

“I’d like to have a medical tricorder issued for my personal use, if you don’t mind.” Khiryn added in a more serious tone. “Part of detecting flare ups early involves frequent scans. I can have the readings sent to my file, so you’ll have access to everything.”

“That can be arranged,” Elaine nodded, “I can get one of the Engineers to rig one up for you, it’s a good idea,”

“Also…” He paused for a moment. “Its not urgent… but I’ve become refractory to the more common medications used to treat my flare ups. If you have free time, it might be wise to look into alternative treatments… just in case my condition becomes serious. I’d be more than happy to collaborate with you and volunteer for additional scans if that would help.”

Ensign Khiryn Donivas - Science Officer - U.S.S. Athena

Just then a little ball of fluff with a nose and a wagging tail jumped up on the bio bed next to Khiryn.

Khiryn was surprised as the animal jumped up in the bed next to him. He leaned back and took it in. I normally prefer feline variants… they are more independent. that didnt stop hik from offering the canine a pet before the CMO snatched it away.

“Enj,” Elaine jumped, quickly grabbing the dog and putting him back down on the floor, “Sorry about that, he knows better than to jump on bio beds without permission,” seeming just like a scolded schoolboy, the dog hung his head on his paws and lay on the floor.

“Anyway, you want to look into alternative treatments? I’ll be happy to help. I’m still fairly new on board myself but once I’m all settled in, I’ll be sure to pull the books out and we can set up some appointments to test things out. Is there anything you’ve already been looking into and tried?”

Lt. Janvier, CMO

Ensign Donivas shook his head. “Its not urgent. Its just that traditional treatments were losing effectivness… and the Doctors seemed a little nervous during my last flare up.” The Akaali shrugged. “I figured its be a good idea to try and devise some strategies early… rather than waiting until my life is in jeopardy.”

“I’ve heard having your life in jeopardy isn’t that much fun,” the doctor said, her eyes twinkling humorously.

“I can check back in with you in a few weeks or so… once we both have a chance to settle in.”

Ensign Khiryn Donivas - Science Officer - U.S.S. Athena

“That sounds good, I’ll pre-set a reminder for us to get in touch in a couple of weeks.” she said, typing away into her PADD again. She didn’t know about Donivas, but she knew how absorbed she could get into her work, and she knew before she saw him again that she would be researching as much as she could.

“Is there anything else, before I start my scans?”

Lt. Janvier, CMO
