“I was only on the Memorial for a few months before the transfer, it was my first ship when i left the academy, I don’t think theres anything to be concerned about, it will just take a bit of time to get used to the ship, that’s all”

Kingston nodded. “A second posting in your first year after graduation can still be a lot. Tell me about those months on the Memorial. Any notable ups and downs?”

“Not really, I felt like I could have had an off duty friendship with the XO , she was to be my sparring partner, but we never got the chance before we were transferred, other than that I mainly did my job and kept myself to myself”

She gave an encouraging nod. “Forming bonds with shipmates can definitely be a challenge and it’s hard when people can come and go so easily. How do you see yourself trying to form connections here?”

I’ve heard there’s to be a welcome party for us,” Chris said. “I intend to use the opportunity to get to know some of the crew.”

“That will be a great opportunity. I’m hoping to drop by myself at some point. And the Athena is a big ship with a healthy social calendar. There’s always something happening,” Kingston said.

She shifted her position, crossing on leg over the other knee. “When you’re not on duty, what do you like to do?”

“I like to keep myself in shape, I also use a sparring promgram in the holodeck to keep my hand to hand combat skills sharp”

He finished then took another measured sip of his tea

Janna smiled lightly. It was rare that a member of the security team or adjacent teams didn’t do some sort of sparring or physical training off-duty. There was nothing wrong with that, but people were also layered and there was more to them than their job, even if it formed a significant piece of their identity. “You’ll find yourself in good company then. Many of the crew do something similar. Do you do these programs on your own, or do you invite friends and shipmates to join you?”

“Usually on my own......however on the Memorial I had planned to have the XO join me as a sparring partner but alas we never got the chance, She’s Finarian(sorry if it’s spelt wrong D) from the Warrior caste, I wanted to see how I would stack up even though I had size on my side”

“A fun challenge,” Janna said. “I know the security team often trains together, but perhaps if you open it up to others at some point, you might find others interested as well,” she said, casually tossing out the suggestion to see how it landed.

“Is there anyone I need to watch my step with? I expect not but you never know”

Chris said on the verge being tongue in cheek

Janna gave him a lopsided smile. “If I told you that, what fun would your job be?” she said, her green eyes glimmering with mischief. Most security officers were always on the lookout for something, and she saw that he was no different. But it was nice to see him relax a little with her.

“very true Counselor, I didn’t think it would be that easy but i had to ask”

She gave a half shrug. “Sure. Though as a security officer, I would expect you to have above average skills at conflict resolution. Are you anticipating issues with people on the Athena?”

“Of course not, as Starfleet officers I would expect them to behave with the utmost respect for themselves and those around them”

He paused for a second, was that a trick question or was the CNS just trying to ascertain how Chris would react to the question, he wasn’t sure however he had already decided upon walking into the room that he would answer each question openly and as honest as he could.

Kingston nodded, leaning back in her chair. “So aside from the joke response to my asking if you had any questions about the ship, is there anything you would like to know? Or anything you think would help you settle in here?”

He decided to respond seriously now , his light hearted joking didn’t seem to go very well for him.

Rapport was important in working with people and there were often times when it was just plain hard to establish in a boarding eval. There was only so much she could do in this initial sessions, especially if there was no obvious reason for them to meet again soon. In Kingston’s mind that made it even more important for her to ensure the person before her had the knowledge and resources they needed to settle into their new assignment. For the most part it seemed that the ensign had both.

“Alright then. Now I’m going to say what seems like a standard line, but I do mean it. If you find yourself having challenges in the next few weeks as you settle in, please come see us. Even if it’s just because you need a sounding board. Alright?”

She gave a nod and gestured to the door. “Alright then, you’re cleared for duty. Carry on with your day. I hope it goes smoothly.” She already knew what she would write in her eval notes and she could probably get that done before the next person ventured into her office.

Chris said , getting up and leaving the office and headed for the COS office that he had yet reported to
