The Athena was exactly what Khiryn was expecting when he made the decision to leave academia and transfer to his first ship. Serving on a deep space explorer would round out his resume and help him make rank.

His brief stint… doing intensive starship familiarization… opened his eyes to the possibilities associated with exploration and dealing with the unknown. Now Ensign Donivas was ready to get to work… which was why his first stop was the General Science Lab. It seemed to serve as the hub of the Science Department and the Chief Science Officer’s private office was attached to it.

After stepping into the lab, Khiryn took in the quiet energy of the room. Multiple people were manning consoles and reviewing various types of data, while others debated a specific reading or display. Ensign Donivas waited for a moment until he could catch the attention of a lab assistant that wasn’t busy. “Excuse me, is the CSO available? I’m checking in.”

OOC: I wasn’t sure if you were more likely to be working in the lab or in your office, so I left it open ended.

Rowe sat quietly at a workstation pouring over the the latest results from the long-range sensor telemetry diagnostics, he frowned as yet again the data came back inconsistent. There were too many minor subspace distortions… some inconsistent gravimetric readings… and a couple of signal echo discrepancies. The new voice roused him from his foxhole and he looked up at the man. He gave the new officer a quick glance and got the impression that shipboard life was also new to him. Rowe welcomed a break from number crunching to walk over. Placing a hand on the assistant’s shoulder, he gave a polite nod sending him on his way.

“The Chief should be back around pretty soon.” James extended his right hand in greeting. “I’m James Rowe. First time this far out in the black?”
