Elara tucked the last of her personal items, the few things she couldn’t just replicate, into a carry-all and cast her gaze around her temporary quarters. Starbase 157 had been home for the last few weeks. But with the Athena docked and crews about to rotate onto the ship for it’s next cruise, it was time to get ahead of the curve. Pull off the bandaid, so the saying went.

Slipping into the corridor, it was a short jaunt to the nearest turbolift. The lift took her straight to the Athena’s gangway. While the turbolift could have directly entered the Athena’s lift system and taken her anywhere on the ship, in her mind it was a better idea to at least walk some of it. Exercise was good, but it would also help her get a feel for her size and layout. Exactly the kind of thing she’d need for a host of reasons.

The gangway was almost empty as she arrived, but gold-clad chief stood with a PADD inspecting some cargo on a grav sled. Seeing her, he straightened, standing at attention. Elara came to a crisp halt. “Lieutenant junior grade Elara Dain reporting in,” she said, then fished out her own PADD. “You would be?”

The younger blonde human inclined his chin. “Ian Longshore, ma’am. Acting quartermaster.” Bringing up his PADD, he tapped a few buttons, then nodded. “Ah, I see you are scheduled to come aboard. New doctor, eh? No argument there.”

Elara tilted her head, flashing some spots. “Problem?”

“No, no problem, ma’am. Other than being a little short-staffed.” Tap tap tap. “And arrival is logged.” Swipe. “Those are your quarters. Get back to me if you need anything special, or need help moving something from the industrial replicators to your quarters.” Tap tap tap. Tap tap. “And your department head should notified, along with the XO and Operations Chief.” Stepping forward, he offered a hand. “Welcome aboard, Doctor.”

Elara marveled at his casual efficiency. She smiled as she took the proffered hand. “Thanks,” she said with a little more confidence than she felt. New colleagues meant new power dynamics. Who was going to try to throw her under the shuttle? Hopefully nobody.

Moving on, she caught a nearby lift, taking her up the neck to the primary hull and the appropriate deck. At least she could see what she was working with for quarters and drop off her stuff.

Lt., j.g. Dain, Doctor

When the lift doors opened, a broad shouldered clean shaven dark haired man stood there in civilians clothes. His shirt was dark blue with the seems of the clothes colored gold.

He grinned and nodded slowly. “Ah, it seems I am late. And you must be new here? My name is Dawson, and you must be?” All of this was said from within the lift as he made space for her to enter.

-Dawson

Green eyes evaluated him quickly. Tall, handsome, broad at the shoulders, muscular and fit. A tactical or security type. But something about the looseness of his posture, and his swagger suggested something more. Special ops maybe. No uniform. Off duty maybe. Or maybe a civilian.

The Lt. J.G. pips on her collar were a giveaway of sorts. “Ah Mister Dawson, I’m Doctor Elara Dain,” she said offering a hand as she stepped into the lift. =^=Deck 11.=^= Turning back to the man towering over her she leaned back against the lift wall. “Off duty?”

Lt. Cmdr. Stone, Executive Officer

He took her hand and gave a customary shake. He then gave her genuine smile before replying. “Yes, off duty for now. It’s a pleasure to meet you Doctor Elara Dain. It’s good to have a couple doctors in here. Poor Ben is kept so busy. It’ll be nice to see him relax hopefully. Is there anything you might need assistance with?”

Of course, Dawson rarely offered up his true position aboard the Athena. She’d likely figure it out in time.

-Dawson

Ela considered. “I’ve heard it’s been quiet for this ship, but then again with two full-service Sickbays and a smaller one down in the secondary hull, I would imagine all but the worst emergencies wouldn’t feel like much. Still, it would keep the Chief Medical Officer busy. With any luck I might be able to lighten Doctor Grey’s load some.” She flashed Dawson a small but warm smile. “I’m not really used to the Mythology-class yet. Figured I should get the lay of the land. Can’t always rely on site-to-site transports in an emergency.” The doctor pursed her lips in thought for a moment. “Any recommendations on ship and crew? Anything unique to the ship?”

Lt., j.g. Dain, Doctor

Dawson smiled with the same amount of warmth. “Well, the Mythology class does have some rather unique features. Other ships might have them, but its rare. Recreation hall along with 17/18 Forward. Arboretum. Various other perks depending on the department you find yourself in. It’s a large ship and is typically even bigger depending on which module is installed on the ship at the time. Though if we are going for unique to the Athena, I’d have to pin the Parthenon as the that very thing. Its actually what we call 17/18 Forward. Been that way for some time apparently. The owner or manager of the place is named Marishka. She can be direct and feisty when given the chance. But she cares.”

He paused considering what to say about people and the crew. “As for your superior, I’ve been under the understanding that he was stellar hearing? Or was it smell? I’m not so sure. Its one of the two. First officer was a former security chief. The captain is…odd. He has an absolute knack for anything engineering related. There’s a solid command team on this ship. A sense of family aboard.” He then turned his eyes to the new doctor. “Sound like your cup of tea?” he asked curiously.

-Dawson

bump

Elara considered his words, suppositions, and what he made of the crew and found herself smiling. “Sounds like a good ship and crew. The specific dynamics will tell more, but as a quick-and-dirty brief goes, that’s pretty good. Sounds good.” She studied him for a moment, subtly chewing the inside of her cheek. Bad habit that. A wry smile spread across her face. ‘I bet you get up to plenty of fun around here.” There was something in the way he’d said Marishka’s name. A connection there. But then again with guy like that, he probably had a few ‘connections’ aboard the ship.

Lt., j.g. Dain, Doctor

Dawson gave a small laugh. “When you’ve lived as long as I have, rest assured fun is the way to go.” He paused thoughtfully before adding. “Well. So long as the captain doesn’t know.” He was being cheeky, certainly. And he was curious how she would respond. Would she scold him for such a declaration or encourage it?

-Dawson, Intel

“You say that like you’re some old man or ancient being. So how old are you really?” She tilted her head, flashing her spots a little. “And what about the captain? Is he some sort of stick in the mud? Or is he all about ‘order and discipline on his ship’?”

Lt., j.g. Dain, Doctor

Dawson smirked as the turbolift doors opened to the hallway beyond. He gestured for her to take the lead, and he followed after as he replied to her questions. “I’m El Aurian. I’m a bit over nine. Yes, nine centuries old.” he said thoughtfully with a grin.

“As for the captain,” he said with a chuckle. “No, he’s not exactly a stick in the mud. But he does know that being the man in the center chair requires at least some form of maturity. If you can get him to open up, you’ll likely get to see that side of him.”

-Dawson

She brushed past him, stepping out into the corridor. “What side, being a stick in the mud? Or did you mean something else?” Fishing a Padd from her pocket, Elara checked something on it, then cast her gaze about, studying the layout. “I still don’t have the Mythology-class layout down. You mind…?” She turned the padd where he could see her quarters assignment. Port side, mid section for the deck not far, and pretty much a straight drop to Sickbay. Well one of them.
Lt., j.g. Dain, Doctor

Dawson laughed. “You’re going to lead me into sharing too much information. I’ll leave that as a surprise for you to figure out if so choose.” he said with a mischievous grin.

He glanced at the padd and nodded. “Sure, just follow me.” he gestured down a corridor before continuing. “So, my turn to ask questions. What was your last ship like?” he asked light heartedly.

-Dawson

“Big. Metal. Warp drive. Phasers. Full of sick people.” Her tone was deadpan flat, but then a grin lit up her face. “Nah, my last tour was on the U.S.S. Valkyrie. Viking-class. Good ship, good crew.” She shrugged one shoulder.

Lt., j.g. Dain, Doctor

Dawson nodded thoughtfully. “The Valkyrie, hmm? Seem to be getting quite a few people from there. You know Commander Stone then?” he asked curiously, paying attention to the details of what was said and unsaid.

-Dawson

She paused. “Commander Stone. I knew one on the Valkyrie. Serena Stone. Was our Chief of Security and senior tactical officer. Tough, but more importantly.. very capable. Wound up patching her up a few times. It’ll e nice to have a familiar face aboard.”

Lt., j.g. Dain, Doctor

Dawson nodded as he considered her response. “Sounds like you’ve gotten yourself used to changing ships? I usually hear people speak fondly of their previous ship. I’m not saying you aren’t, but there is something reserved in it all.” He turned and gave her a grin. “You’re welcome to keep it reserved though. I’m no counselor by any means.”

-Dawson, Intel

She raised both eyebrows then nodded. “Ah, this is only my third tour and second ship. Well besides the Academy cruise.” She shrugged one shoulder. “The Valkyrie was… tougher, in some ways. Less frills. Tighter ship. But a good one. Felt like lots of brothers and sisters, besides the captain being kind of tight. I’m hoping the Athena is. .I don’t want to say lax, but less stiff. Reserved.” She flashed him a small smile, head tilted just so, weight shifting to be a little more relaxed.

Lt., j.g. Dain, Doctor

((bump))

Dawson gave an understanding nod. “The Athena is many things. Stiff is not one them from my understanding. I would say most of the crew has learned how to stretch themselves, explore a bit. There is some freedom here in that.”

He looked back and then forward past Elara before leaning in conspiratorially. “Just don’t tell anyone I said that. Stretch too much and it’s on you if you get caught.” He pulled back with a mischevious grin.

He straightened his attire quickly before adding, “Well, I suppose I should let you get settled in? If you need broader tour you can contact me. I can show you the basics. Is there anything else i can do for you madam?”

-Dawson

Ela snickered a this sudden formality. “Not at this time. But I will keep it in mind. Can always use more friendly faces especially on a new ship.” She shrugged again. “And a little stretching never hurts. Sometimes feels pretty good.” Her eyes glittered with a similar mischievous streak. “Maybe in a few days you can show me some of that stretching you mentioned.”

Lt., j.g. Dain, Doctor

Dawson picked up on the trill woman’s mischevious attitude. He gave a light laugh. “Be happy to oblige. I can give it my best shot. Welcome aboard!” He replied with both modesty and mischevity before giving her a once over and turning back down the hall.

-Dawson

Ela caught the look and shook her head. A moment later she was in her new quarters. The place, while small, efficient… for a ship, spacious. And from the layout, no roommates. Hers, all hers. Making her way into the bedroom, she sprawled out as best she could on the twin-sized bed. Still, better than the Viking-class. This actually was a little more compartmentalized. A little less utilitarian. All hers. Well, as much as any space was.

Stowing away what few things she had that she wouldn’t or couldn’t replicate, Ela stepped back out, securing the space behind her and headed back for the turbolifts. Where to next…? Try to hunt down the deck officer or the Chief of the Watch, or head down to Sickbay 1?

Lt., j.g. Dain, Doctor

((bump, if anybody’s interested. If not, I’ll tie this off.))

Lt., j.g. Dain, Doctor

As she waited for the turbo lift to arrive, a shadow fell across the closed door… and her. Odd, as there was no sun or clouds inside a starship. “Hi.” a deep rumble of a voice said from behind her.

The figure behind her was… large. Her first look at them was center-chest, and the chest was wider than her shoulders. It was also clothed in the gold uniform of the Operations division. There were Commander pips on the collar, and atop the gold uniform was a hairless, emerald green head with a friendly smile. “You must be one of our new arrivals; nice to meet you. Commander Daggum Hammor, Chief Engineer. And you are?” he asked and extended a green hand towards her.

Hammor, CE
