Faye was quickly on her feet and nodded as a smile slipped onto her face. “Yes, let’s!” she said, eager to fill in the blanks on the situation so she could work out a plan. “Let’s meet Scales. Which, I assume he can eat replicated greenery now that his source is gone?”

Liam enjoyed seeing her enthusiasm over the project. He turned and walked out into the corridor, leading the way to the labs. Upon hearing her question, he took a moment to recall.

“Yes, occasionally. His main diet is insects and once a month, a small rodent.” Liam began to explain as he made sure to keep to one side of the hallway, “We don’t waste time in replacing them when we can. Anyone that enters his zone, Scales will climb onto and extend his jaw out. Just gently run your finger along the jawline. Otherwise, he’ll start to jump from one shoulder to the other.”

Faye shot Madison a sideways glance. “Ummm, and if I’m not comfortable with that? Will Scales freak out? I can’t always predict what might be sensorily too much for me,” Faye said.

“If you make any sudden and aggressive movements, he might. Otherwise, you can pull him off of you and he’ll wander off to the next person.” Noticing the unease over the contact, he than offered an alternative. “If you want, I can heat up my palms and it will draw his attention. I can also ask one of the other officers to put in the plants or you can develop a routine with him. He’s easy to lure to places with food. Especially hornworms.”

Faye nodded slowly, taking all of the information in. “I will test it out and see how it goes. I figure it’ll just be something I have to get used to, ut if I have real issues, then I will definitely let you know. Anything else I should know? I’ll read through the info you gave me, and I can do so very quickly. Would it be better for me to do that now or is there anything else you need to tell me before we go in?”

“Nothing that I can recall at the moment.” Liam stated as they arrived at the door. He pressed a button causing the door to hiss open and reveal several exhibits. Upon one was a sign that read: Scales’ House. There were flourishes of flora patterns and a drawn chibi stylized replica of the animal within. On the inside were a few twisting trees, several bare patches of earth and torn foliage.

Calloway tilted her head and studied the habitat, and the sign.

Upon setting his sights on the sign, Lian hadn’t been a fan at first. However, the other officers found it motivating and so he allowed it. “This is his habit. Apologies for the sign. The Junior staff had an artist and she wanted to practice her skill. I saw no harm in it.”

“It’s… unique. Kind of pretty,” Faye said.

“It has its own charm.”

His hand pointed to the work station nearby. “That’s where you’ll be growing the plants. We set it up nearby for convenience.”

Faye moved over and surveyed the workstation which was set up for basic plant propagation under grow lights. She gave a nod. “This will do.”

Moving back to the habitat, she peered inside, looking for the reptile she’d be helping out.

Liam pressed a button on the enclosure’s console. Data about the temperature, last feeding, and more raced by his eyes. He frowned. It was nearly an hour past feeding time and no evidence of food was set in his tray.

“Well, time for his feeding and I don’t see the officer around. So, ready to catch a glimpse?” Liam asked as he unlocked the drawer and pulled out a few large insects.
