A busy day, Shock decided to finish his shift early as he hadn’t had time to eat lunch at the usual hour. So around 15:45, he left his office to go to the lounge to grab some lunch. It was quiet in the lounge at this hour – at least in comparison to normal mealtime hours, and Shock could easily find an empty table by his favourite spot by the windows.

Having ordered baked potatoes, which he drenched in oil, with a side dish of high-protein mushrooms from Vulcan, he sat and enjoyed his bland meal.

He took up his padd, and starting going over Klingon inflexions. jI-, qa-, vI-, Sa-, vI-; bI-, cho-, Da-, ju-, Da-.... There was something relaxing about going over prenominal verbal prefixes.

He sighed, and took another bite of his oily potato.

– Lt Shock (COS)

“Helpful hint: don’t ever say Hab SoSlI’ Quch! to friends. Though if they are non-Klingons, they might just give you a confused look,” Faye said, moving into his line of sight.

In his studies of Vulcan, he had come across the phrase. It was a common, vulgar insult, with the meaning “your mother has a smooth forehead”, alluding, perhaps, to the visual anatomies of Vulcans, humans and other species, or perhaps, to the disgraced period in their history when some Klingons indeed had smooth foreheads.

“Mind if I join you?” She was in the Parthenon despite her better judgement and it was honestly nice to see a friendly-ish face.

“Not at all,” he replied. “But my mother does have a smooth forehead, and I assume yours has too. Please.” He indicated that she could sit down in front of him.

Calloway smirked and she took a seat. “Hence, why I won’t take offence. Though to be fair, there was plenty else I would have taken offence to over the years that would rival the Klingons penchant for disagreements. It’s probably why I tend to get along with them.”

She gestured with her chin towards the PADD. “Studying for any particular reason?”

~Faye Calloway, CIO

“I simply find the language relaxing, and easy on the ear.” he replied, elated that someone took an interest to his interests. “The grammar is fascinatingly logical, more-so than the Vulcan languages I know. Do you know Klingon, yourself?”

Calloway nodded. “I’m conversational. Enough to get into and out of trouble… most of the time,” she said before breaking into a grin.

Shock tried to assess whether this was a joke or if there was truth to what Calloway had said. All in all, Calloway had been through a lot of things – dealing with Klingons wouldn’t have been surprising.

It was at that moment that Marishka stepped out of her office and began making rounds.

Seem to familiar faces whom she had begun to warm up to she decided to make her way towards them. She could overhear talk of Klingon insults and differences in language.

“Good afternoon so lovely to see you here today. Can I get you anything Faye? Can I freshen your drink Chief?”

“I should eat something, shouldn’t I?” Faye said. Yes, it was lunchtime and she was in the lounge, but her brain was now focused on conversation and all that entailed.

“Thank you, likewise, Marishka” he said, as he finished up his potato. “Would you join us? We were just talking about the Klingon language.”

– Lt Shock (COS)

Since it was Marishka’s establishment she usually took the attitude of she could do as she pleased. If she wanted to join some patrons for lunch she would if she felt like it. Usually she worked hand in hand with the staff on most occasions. She hadn’t heard anybody describe the Klingon language as easy on the ear though so this definitely warranted a sit-down.

“Don’t mind if I do. I have a bit of free time and I think it’s about time for one of my many small meals of the day.”

  • Marishka

Shock scooped over to give Marishka some extra space so that she could fit a chair where they were all seated.

“Please,” he said, inviting her to join them. “What will you be eating?”

– Shock

As if on cue a waiter stepped over with a chair and said it where shock had made room for it.

“Could you please bring me one of those three cheese omelets, and make certain to add the mushrooms this time. Also I think I need another cup of coffee if I’m going to get through the rest of this day.”

“Oh! Omelet and coffee sounds good. For me too as well, please,” Calloway said.

Liam stepped into the lounge. A few officers glanced his way, stirring up his awareness and anxiety. He wasn’t surprise since he rarely step foot in the lounge. It was difficult to justify it since injects fulfilled his basic needs. However, he did miss favors and textures causing him to venture from his labs.

In the back of his mind, he could see Kingston pleased with his spur of the moment decision. She wanted him to push out of his shell more after their sessions.

With determined steps, he moved to the replicator and punched in his order. He settled on spice tea, baked salmon with lemon, and mixed green salad with garlic bread. Nothing too extreme. Gripping his tray, he turned and glanced at the seating arrangements. Now, he just needed to find a place to sit.

As Mariska waited for her order she slid into the chair that had been provided and glanced around the bar again as she often did. She hadn’t noticed Liam walking in the room but rather sensed his presence. Glancing around again she realized whom it was.

“Mr Dawson, if you have some time later on I would love to continue our conversation or perhaps you could join us.”

She had said loud enough to be overheard but not loud enough to take over the conversation of the entire establishment.

  • Marishka

Faye didn’t know the CSO personally and so far they had not interacted one-on-one. She should probably rectify that.

~Faye Calloway, CIO

“The more, the merrier,” Shock stated in his monotone Vulcan way.
