Horace chuckled as she settled in, and ordered herself a beer. He himself was sipping on Beer in a bottle labelled Old Tillman’s. Horace turned a bit on the stool, his dark green eyes watching the doctor for a moment before he spoke, “It went as expected I guess, long meeting with the Executive Officer, Tomorrow I am on inspection detail, so I will be all over the place getting familiar with the crew and the ship, need to at least meet the Senior Ratings in each department, let them know the big dog is on the watch now. Got my things settled into my quarters, being senior has its perks, I got quarters to myself that’s nice.” he said before taking a long sip of the beer.

Horace understood long hours, they ran cadets almost ragged as medical schools ran prospective doctors, so he could only imagine the workload of Doctor Cadets. The scuttlebutt on the old chiefs network had not had anything bad to say about any of the senior officers of the Athena. Some had reputations that were a little questionable, but that was any group of people. “How was your shift?”

MCPO Horace Harkness

It was clear Horace took his job very seriously, and it seemed fitting and telling he called himself the big dog on watch. Cara wondered if his job really was to hold them accountable and keep them honest. Cara tapped a finger lightly on her cool glass of beer, always full of nervous energy.
“Doesn’t sound like a bad first day,” Cara agreed and she gave him another smile. She was a little envious of the private quarters. “I share with someone but I haven’t even met them yet since our hours are so opposite. So I guess it could be worse,” Cara replied with a grin. At Horace’s question about her own shift she only shrugged.
“Not bad just long mostly. The crew is in pretty good health other than seeing an occasional scrap or two, so mostly I spent the time looking through medical records, and correcting data. As well and taking care of equipment,” Cara said and she looked a bit disappointed she had hoped to see something amazing while she was out here but she knew not to expect too much on her fist day.
“I’m sure the Command just love hearing they have someone watchng them,” Cara said with a laugh and then clincked her glass against his bottle of beer.
“To new beginnings,” Cara pronounced and then took a sip. She felt at ease with Horace and she was glad to get to interact with the man outside of sickbay. She kept thinking about his job and what the man might be looking for.
“So what kind of things do you watch out for on your observations? Is it like a medical board review looking to make sure everything was done to the best of our ability,” Cara asked out of curiosity.

Horace paused and took another sip, that was a difficult question. What did he do. There was a list of things that he did. How to explain them to someone, was something he never thought about much. They either knew what he did, and stayed out of his way, or had no idea, and caused him problems in the execution of his duties. No one had ever just asked, it was kind of refreshing.

“Well let’s see the easy explanation, You know how the Executive Officer is the buffer between the Captain and all the other officers on the ship?” that was the Execs true primary duty, fix all the issues before they got the Captain’s attention. Second was to translate the Captain’s wishes into orderly pieces that were handed into each department head for execution. “Well I am the same but between the Executive Officer and the invisible masses, the enlisted crew. I take the Executives directions, and translate them for the other Chiefs, who give them to their ratings, and we keep the ship humming along in the different departments, you could say I am a Jack of All trades when it comes to shipboard life for the Crewmen. Though I am an Engineer Rating by original training, I can work Operations, Security, Engineering, I can hum the tune for Science and Medical if absolutely necessary, but my primary job is to make sure all the Chiefs know how their Indians should behave, and enforce that behavior before the Exec has to step in.” Horace confided. “Babysitter, bottle washer, and cook”

Cara thought she got the basics of what Horace did. He was able to jump in and soeak the language of all the different departments to keep the communication flowing. She thought it sounded like a pretty tough job.
“I’m impressed, that’s a lot for one person,” Cara admitted, “I have trouble just keeping up with my own department I couldn’t imagine having to keep up with all of them. I think I would lose my mind,” Cara added with a chuckle. She took a another sip of her much needed beer and then set down with a satisfied sigh.
“I’ve never wanted to be anything else but a doctor since I was a kid. My parents…were alright with me being a doctor just not the wanting to join Star-Fleet,’” Cara said and then took another drink of her beer realized she had been talking too much about her self. she put the beer down and gave him a small smile.
“Does your wife join your assignments sometimes,” Cara asked because she didn’t want to know more her friend’s wife and his life in general.

Horace shook his head no, “Iris and I haven’t been stationed together since just before Miranda was born, We met and fell in love in a single trip. She was caught under a torpedo, I was the leader of the team that moved it, then I carried her to sickbay” Horace left out his own injuries or returning to over see the movement of the rest of the torpedos from the bow launcher to the aft to fight off the Borg at Wulf 359. That was not needed for the story, Iris had lived, he had lived, they had been married 3 weeks later, and he had not picked a fight with a Marine since.

Cara smiled at the way Horace said his wife and daughter’s names. He was a softy for those he cared about, but she had already known that.
“So you saved her life and then she married you, it sounds like a fairytale,” Cara replied with grin. It was the kind of story young girls dreamed about. Cara wasn’t sure if such a love story was possible for her. She was a doctor with limited time and now she was on a ship headed towards deep space. There was always hope.
“I beleive that are somethings that are meant to be, and you and Iris must be one of them,” Cara said tenderly and then she thought back to the academy and the young man who she had a crush on. They’d done on a few dates but as happens in Star-fleet once he graduated she never really heard from him again.
“I don’t know if I’ll ever get married, doctor’s aren’t exactly known for having time on their hands for things like a family,” Cara added and then took a gulp of her beer.

Horace laughed, “No she spent days telling me how I was at fault then we went on a date, she beat me up, and then we got married” Horrace licked a bit of beer from his stubble and nodded at the tender for another. “You ready Cara? and I have known plenty of doctors that managed career and family.” Horace seemed fairly relaxed as he watched the hustle and bustle of the lounge around them. Then grinned, “you play darts kid?”

MCPO Harkness

Cara laughed with Harkness feeling a bit better and more relaxed after a long day. When Horace asked if she was ready for anothe she nodded her had and accepted the cool refill gratefully. Luckily she could hold her drink was only a little flushed from the first beer.
“I never say no to good beer Cara said cheerfully. She thought about his statement about having a family and she shrugged, “I guess never say never, we’ll just have to see,” Cara replied and she grinned wickedly when Horace asked if she wanted to play darts. It had been some time but there was no time like the present.
“Oh I never say no to a good game of darts either,” she joked and then hoped off the stool and grabbed the darts and handing a set to Horace. She looked at the dart board and then three three perfect bulls eyes and a few people who were paying attention clapped.

Ensign Cara Daniels-Doctor

Horace blinked and stopped mid slide from his stool. A triple set of bulls eyes. He shook his head and took a long swallow of Old Tillman’s, maybe Darts were not his best option here, he laughed as he stepped over.

“Nice throw, but a word of caution, always make certain what game you’re playing first.” Horace stated stepping over and marking off the Bulls Eyes on the Cricket board.

MCPO Harkness, Chief of the Boat

Cara laughed as she watched Horace mark off the bullseyes. “leason learned,’ she said warmly and then handed Horace the darts and then she stepped back to allow him a chance to throw.
“We should spar sometime, I’ll bet you would have a lot to teach me,” Cara suggested as she took another gulp of her beer feeling more relaxed than she had since she came aboard.
