It was 10:30, and Shock was dutifully outside the Counsellor’s office according to his schedule, right on the minute, and chimed the door.

He had already gathered that the counsellor, a human woman, a doctor Janna Kingston, clinical psychologist and active researcher, would be the one meeting him. Perhaps he would – at some other time – be able to discuss her views of emotional trauma among Vulcans as opposed to other more “feely” species. But this time, he was at the centre of attention. He needed to pass his psychological evaluation before he could take duty.

He was not nervous. His state of mind was serene.

The door opened up into the reception are of the Counselling Suite. Inside the half-moon shaped space, the door faced the central reception desk where a Risian Ensign sat. On either side of the entrance were a few chairs that faced the six doors behind the reception desk, each a different colour. These were the offices.

The assistant looked up and smiled. “Welcome! How can the counselling department help you today?”

“Good morning,” said Kastarak. While he was initially taken aback that there was a whole reception and not one counsellor’s office, he quickly realized that it was only logical for a ship with so many non-Vulcans requiring a whole department of counsellors. “I am here for the required psychological evaluation before going on active duty. I am lieutenant Shock, assigned chief of security.”
