“Well, you know I’m here if you need a sounding board, yes?” Janna said. It was important for both of them to get comfortable with each other so that Janna could provide the guidance Jenn needed. Right now they really didn’t know each other much at all and that would need to change quickly.

“Of course,” Wallace replied with a slightly tense smile that relaxed after a moment. “I do appreciate that. Thank you.”

Janna considered Wallace for a moment, pondering how to proceed. “So one of the things that occurred to me recently is that you came aboard and had your eval with Iven. Then we had all the changes and we’ve all been finding our footing. It does mean that we haven’t really had a chance to get to know one another and that becomes a problem as missions unfold. While I know predominantly my work is down in the Counselling Suite, I do want to be on the bridge on occasion and make myself available. I think that would be easier if had a chance to build a proper rapport.”

“Of course. I’d set aside a chair for you but I’m not sure if there is one specifically for the Counselor. And in regards to my evaluation, would you want to have a new one so that you’re the one doing it?”

Janna shrugged. “It depends. I’m not a fan of needlessly doing evaluations. If nothing has changed since Iven did your boarding one and you are feeling good about where things are at for you, then so am I. But if you feel it would be helpful, but all means come on by in the morning and we’ll have a more formal chat.”

Kigston had had a lot of commanding officers in her career thus far. Each had their own way of being and accomplishing things. Some she knew more intuitively how to approach, others she needed more information. She didn’t want to push Wallace in any particular direction but she did feel that they might have to work a bit harder to get that necessary rapport.

Jenn nodded a few times, pursing her lips as she tried to decide whether there was anything else to say, or if it was time to dismiss Janna and get back to her reports. “Cool…” It was clear she put on a different face in front of the crew that what she experienced in private. The raw Jennifer was an quiet, often frustrated or nervous woman who struggled to relate to other people unless she had interacted extensively with them. The people she had been closest to in life were people who had pushed to get to know this private version of her. The professional Jennifer was a different woman - commanding when necessary, courageous and sure of her decisions. She was still hard to get to know, but it seemed as though that was more because of a professional attitude to conversations than the truth being that she was just very awkward. She stood up straighter, spoke louder, and all-in-all put off a much more confident vibe when she was on the bridge with the officers than when she was alone in her ready room with someone who was ‘allowed’ to see that softer aspect of herself.

Just because Janna was experienced, didn’t mean she always knew what to do or say in any given moment. Sometimes it was all about intuition. But with Jennifer, she wasn’t entirely sure how to proceed. The woman’s one words response wasn’t exactly an invitation and Janna could push, but the question became should she? “Well then, offer is there. Is there anything you want to discuss while I’m here?”

Jennifer looked at Janna for a moment, then shook her head. “No, no. I don’t have anything else I need to discuss with you. You’re free to go back to your other duties.”
