He read the name on the plaque outside the door again, and the typically dark expression he wore as his ‘relaxed face’ broke into a slight smile for a moment. Once, it had been his name on a plaque just like that, outside a door just like this, on a ship much smaller than this full of eager Cadets. The Prophets worked in mysterious ways, if a person was to believe in such things.Ros didn’t, he had no illusion that the Prophets were simply a useless collection of (powerful) alien life forms that his people spent far too much time worshipping and following when these creatures clearly didn’t give a toss. Why his people failed to separate gods from aliens escaped him, although he suspected that as a culture the Bajoran people were still too infantile to stand proud as themselves, instead of pawns of a worthless Alien power. The smile slipped from his face again. If the wormhole aliens had been willing to use that power to help his people, things might be different. He would never have been born, to start with.
With a grunt to himself as the irony surfaced in his mind, he reached for the chime. Time to check-in then get to work.
Lt Cmdr Akirel, CE
OOC: FYI: Athena has a whole counselling department. You walk into a reception and behind that in a semi circle are six offices. I’m just going to wing this and it’ll all work out just fine. :D
OOC: Course it will ;)
IC:
The counselling department’s Risian receptionist, Cherry, appeared as the door slide open, a wide smile on her face. “Welcome!” she said, stepping back and waving him in. Do you have an appointment already? If not, what can we help you with?” she said , making her way around the large desk that was the reverse of the room’s semi-circle shape. She could spot a new crew member pretty easily after all the years she had bene aboard, and it wasn’t unusual for new crew and officers to be surprised by the size of the counselling facilities. The perk of being such a large vessel it seems.~Cherry, Receptionist
If the Bajoran was surprised at all by the Counseling suite it never showed, Ros wouldn’t have been a half competent Chief Engineer or prior-Intelligence officer if he hadn’t done his homework on the layout of the ship he was assigned to (in contrast to his writer, who clearly hasn’t looked at the specs for years). He also benefitted from a poker face that had taken years to construct, but had been much used in his years in Starfleet Intelligences ‘Asset Recovery’ department.
Stepping inside he followed the Risian to the desk, then casually sat on the edge of the desk as he looked at her. The Bajorans eyes were piercing, an almost hypnotic dark green that had an intensity that might feel to some as if he was looking into their soul, but he easily broke into a soft smile that was charming and, when mixed with those eyes, playfully mischievous. His slight nod towards her set his moon and star earring rocking slowly, the glimmering sheen glinting even in this regular light from the multifaceted surfaces of polished metal. “Hi, I’m looking for someone to check me off for my boarding assessment,” his voice was calm, soft but had that sanguine undercurrent running through it of a person who was confident in themselves. “I have no appointment, I only arrived recently but I can come back later if I need to make one. I’m Akirel Ros, the New Chief Engineer. What’s your name?”
Lt Cmdr Akirel, CE
The Risian smiled widely, her eyes crinkling at the corners. “I’m Cherry, the department receptionist and assistant.” She pushed back some of her honey brown locks of hair behind her ear. “Just have a seat and I’ll see who’s available. There’s six staff on duty in rotation.”
Ros smiled and seemed to hesitate for just a second as if he was about to say something else as he looked her in the eyes, but instead his smile just widened slightly more and he nodded. “All right, I’ll do that. Thank you Cherry.” Standing from the corner of the desk he had sat himself on he backed away from the desk a step before turning for the nearest seat, then relaxed back into it and casually threw his right ankle over to rest on his left knee, both hands resting in each other in his lap. Once seated, he gave the Risian another smile and then let his eyes move to the room itself.
The red door in the middle (each door was a different colour), slid open and a petite Human woman stepped out, her blond curls bouncing against her chin. Grass green eyes took in Cherry and the newcomer, gave a nod to Ros and moved over the large curved desk, handing a couple PADDs over to Cherry. “Those are for updating, and I sent you the report data you asked for. It should go to the XO tomorrow but I want to look it over before it’s finalized just in case I think of something else.”
Ros returned the nod and let his head tilt slightly as he watched the two. He made no move to hide his curiosity, but at the same time clearly made no effort to hear what was being said. He just payed attention.
“Are you having open hours tomorrow? Ensign Vendez was wanting to stop in I think. Might need a follow-up,” Cherry said.
The blond Lieutenant nodded. “I will be until fourteen0hundred. Then it’s back to back meetings.”
Cherry grinned. “Lucky you. Got time for a walk-in boarding?” She gestured with her head to Ros. “New CE.”
Now, Ros waved casually at the pair, palm open and fingers pressed together as if he was kind of going to salute and waved instead. The whole movement showed an easygoing carelessness while the edges of his mouth turned up in a slight grin.
The Lieutenant turned fully and grinned at Ros. “Lieutenant Commander Akirel, welcome. I’m Dr. Janna Kingston, but Janna is fine with me if you prefer.” She gestured to the red door. “Come on in and we’ll get you sorted and on your way.”
“We’ll go with Dr. Kingston,” Ros said after coming to his feet to follow her. “You’re still on the clock after all, it’s not quite cocktail hour yet.” As he walked past the reception desk he threw Cherry another smile, and might have even half winked at her before he was through the door and it closed behind him.
In the modest space, the petite woman seemed to fit the cozy setting. She didn’t go to great lengths to decorate, but it was definitely more than the standard grey furniture and carpet. On the wall above the couch was an image of an ocean scene that could be almost anywhere and the standard grey slim arm chairs had been replaced with softer larger armchairs in a dark blue that looked inviting to curl up into. On top of the standard carpet, the sitting area was covered in a plush rug in different shades of blues that matched the ocean in the photo. On the other side of the room where she mostly worked, there was a tall leafy plant near her desk and a single silver photo frame on the corner of the desk where she could easily see it when she worked at the computer terminal. Overall, the place was warm but practical and uncluttered- much like Janna.
“Cosy,” Ros commented and paused a moment to look at the picture of the Ocean scene after giving the room the expected once over. “You have a thing for blue. I take it you were raised near the sea.” His question didn’t sound much like one, it was closer to a statement the way he ended the sentence.
“Can I get you anything?” she asked as she made her way to the replicator, looking forward to a cup of coffee.
~Janna Kingston, CNS
“Coffee would be good, please.” Ros glanced at her and then at the dark blue arm chairs, pointing to one and raising an eyebrow in a quiet, clear query if that was where they were sitting. “Double shot cappuccino with almond milk and a butterscotch shot. I spent too much time in Starfleet Command on Earth the last few months, their coffee tastes have stuck for a bit.”
Before he sat down and while he waited for the coffee, he turned his attention to the plant. It was the only one in the room so it drew the eye. “What is it?” He motioned to the tall plant, “I’ve never been good at botany, plants don’t quite work the same between my hands as machinery.”
