Janna continued writing for a bit, giving Viyara the time alone if she needed it. But after about thirty minutes she got up and moved to the kitchen. She would simply ask the computer to generate the food but for some things she was going to be anachronistic. “I’m going to have some lunch I think,” she called out so Viyara could hear her. “Feel free to eat when you feel you need to.”
Even though she had heard Janna loud and clear, Viyara didn’t seem to react. She certainly didn’t reply. Nor did she stop writing and drawing in her journal.
Filling a kettle with water, Janna plugged it in and grabbed a large french press to make some coffee.

A few minutes after Janna had started to make coffee, Viyara suddenly appeared in the doorway to the kitchen. Leaning against it, she said, “I’m sorry I snapped at you earlier. That was uncalled for.”

Janna looked over her shoulder as the kettle settled down after coming to a boil. “If I took it personally every time a patient got upset with me, I’d have burnt out and walked away a long time ago.” She smiled. “I appreciate and accept the apology, even if it isn’t necessary.”
“Thank you,” Viyara replied and smiled back at Janna.
“Coffee? Tea? Something else?” Janna asked asked she gently poured the water in a circle over the grounds in the carafe. “There’s something so comforting about something warm in my hands. Doesn’t hurt that I have terrible circulation these days and my hands are often cold,” she said with a chuckle.

“A coffee would be nice,” Viyara replied as she moved further into the kitchen and started to open cabinet doors in search of mugs. Peering over at Janna, she asked a little uncertainly, “How are we going to continue from here on? What should I expect? What is going to happen when we leave the holodeck?” Of course she suspected that the answer to the last question depended a lot upon how the next two to three days went. But she felt the need to have at least some idea of what was to come. Feel even a slight sense of control over this whole situation.

Letting the coffee brew, Kingston leaned her back against the counter. “What happens from here is that we take things one step at a time. And while I have some information in my head, I have to rest of a clinical evaluation to do, so that will be our next step. It’s a series of questionnaires we’ll go through that and once we know where you’re at we can have a strategy for going forward.” Janna gave Nazeen a warm smile. “Working through trauma is a process. And it’s different for everyone and it can change as we go along too. My goal for when you leave the holodeck is to have a basket of tools that you can pull out at any time you need them so that when you’re not actively working through things with me, you are doing the work yourself while you live your life.”
Listening closely, Viyara nodded here and there. She felt some of the tension leave her body with each piece of information Janna gave her. Did she like everything she heard? Not entirely. But mostly because she still wished there was an easy and instant solution and not because what Janna said didn’t sound reasonable. In fact, it did sound like a good way forward. At least from her point of view and she trusted that Janna knew what she was doing.
“While we are here and”-she used air quotes-“working, you have to be present where I am, just like you would be on duty. Outside of those times we will both do the self-care that we need to keep ourselves able to continue. That means rest, food, exercise and sleep. During those times you are allowed to go anywhere in this program you like without restriction. And I do have a couple important things I need to do outside of the holodeck in a little bit, so if you wanted to have a nap, take a walk, whatever, that would be a good time. Does that answer your questions?”

Viyara nodded, only to ask a follow up question. “What do you have to do outside of the holodeck?” A small frown had appeared on her forehead as she was trying to figure out how she felt about that.

“I have to drop by my office. This”-she gestured around them-“wasn’t exactly my plan today and while the rest of the team will handle my cases ore they’ll be rescheduled, I have to grab a couple things from my office and Sickbay,” she said honestly. “Bu I also had a idea I wanted to run by you. Tomorrow, if you’re feeling up for it and I feel it’ll be okay for you, what would you say to Daggum dropping by and having coffee or something with us? You two can have some time to chat, if you like as well. But if you agree, I do need your permission to talk about our work together with him.”
