Bonaventure: “Precipice”

IC: Early in the morning, hours before Captain Bovar was due on the bridge and just more than half a day before the refit was to be completed, the Captain’s console in her Ready Room lit up with the indication of a message waiting. There were multiple documents in the package, including reports from the refit to be signed off on by department heads before the ship embarked on its general orders. Materials for engineering included a sign-off on all refitted operations after a diagnostic, medical had a sign-off on recent-enough physical exams for the crew to embark on a long-term voyage away from Star-Fleet facilities and had a packet of information on significant new xeno-biological discoveries in this sector, security received an updated phaser pistol training program and regimen for testing that was intended to be more in line with standard MACO training, and new to the stream was an intelligence packet for Intelligence. It made the entire comm stream much more taxing on the Bonaventure’s comm system, the encrypted data stream was taxing for the computer to process.

The general orders, signed by Admiral Bandile Nkosi, gave Captain Bovar discretion in where the Bonaventure ventured to in a neighboring and mostly unexplored sector. Two heavy probes launched more than three decades ago had made basic stellar maps and picked out some things of interest, but no probe, especially that old, could match the detail of a starship’s sensors. The ship was being stocked with supplies for an extra long voyage, if needed the Captain could spend well more than a year in unexplored space without needing to restock on any basic supplies, let alone visit an outpost again.

In addition to routine stellar cartography in the sector there were some places of interest flagged by Command, but they were not marked as essential, the Bonaventure or another ship would simply investigate over the next few years of the sector’s exploration project. For the moment the SS Bonaventure was the only ship in the area with significant laboratory space, it had its pick of projects. There was an anomalous nebula detected only three weeks away at Warp 3.5 with unusually strong bursts of heat radiation unexplained by the chemical reactions that should be going on. Further away at a voyage of five weeks, and far off in an entirely different direction, a close flyby of the Bell-IV probe detected a Minshara-Class world covered almost entirely in water. 98% of its surface was ocean and 2% was rocky and covered in glinting, purple light from thin, whispy islands strewn over the deep blue sphere like gems. Atmospheric composition suggested the life was possible, but, the probe could not collect any definitive evidence before it continued on its journey. As with many planets with oceans, most of the diversity and numbers of any life would be hidden beneath the surface if they were there. The star it orbited was an unusually large red giant, one of only two in the entire sector.

The Bell-IV probe had traveled at low warp for a few years since its stop at the water planet orbiting a relatively cold red star. Ahead on its course, and just over six weeks away at cruising warp, was another Minshara-Class planet. This one was inhabitated, the probe picked up basic amplitude-modulation and frequency-modulation radio signals while picking up no subspace-based communication activity on the planet, suggesting a population with firmly pre-warp technology. This was not able to be confirmed. The planet had also been flagged for further study one additional reason - just before the Bell-IV probe moved on from the planet to its next destination it ran a scan of a select sample of mining and other major industrial sites on an isolated section of a continent. Among the mines was one mining a dilithium ore deposit close to the surface. With one dilithium ore mine found in such a small sample, it was possible that the planet could be covered with many of them.

Ari woke up and glanced at the console as she checked her usual messages. Sitting up, she smiled. “Finally! Something to do.” She said and got up to get going.

Once she was in the Ready Room, she sent a message to the DHs and the XO and Intel Officer. They were to meet in the Ready Room at 0900. She made sure the alarms went off by 0800 for all those who received the messages.

She then began to work on her presentation for when they arrived.

The doors slid open a few minutes before 0900 and the big German Intel officer came through. He was dressed in his uniform and he looked at Bovar and said “Good morning, Captain. I see we have taken on extra supplies… do we have a mission before us?” and he took a seat at the far end of the table allowing the nuts and bolts officers the floor.

Baumann, Intel

Right after Baumann, the medium sized but more handsome French officer came in. “Bonjour Captain and Commander. I see that he sees that we got extra supplies. That’s nice. Are we planning to stay out longer or further this time or just a precaution?” The silky voiced Frenchman said as he took a seat next to the Captain.

Ari smiled at Baumann. “Yes. Major things came on yesterday,” she glanced at Millet and nodded. “Morning. And yes, we will be taking on one more round of cargo and supplies tomorrow. I have the Shift Supervisors taking the lead on that to get the crewmen involved and knock it out quick as we can in the morning. I don’t know if we are going out for longer or further. But I do know we need to make some choices.” She took a sip of her coffee and smiled.

“Baumann, did you get a chance to look over the file I sent you. Marked “INTEL” and wouldn’t open for me.” She grinned with the hint that she tried, though he would know her well enough that she hadn’t even considered it.

Jean-Francois looked at the Captain with a puzzled look on his face. “Captain. Are you feeling ok? I only ask because you’re drinking coffee instead of your usual lavender tea.”

She smiled and shook her head. “This isn’t a lavender tea morning, unfortunately. But I appreciate your concern. I usually have my morning coffee in my room. But this morning I had to be here.” She leaned back in her seat. “We have choices to make. And I may as well run them down for you now. And we’ll discuss it with the others when they get here.”

“So, we need to decide which, if any, we go to first. Or if we hit them all up. Personally, I think we should go to the closer one first.” She laughed. “It also seems the most interesting. And if we hit the water planet next, then the pre-warp planet last, we can spend the most time at the place that needs the most in depth checking on.” She glanced to the two of them and shrugged. “So what do you guys think?”

Melissa rang the chime and waited, she didn’t know if they were having a premeeting or not. So she didn’t want to interrupt. She was dressed in her duty uniform.

The door opened as the chime sounded and Ari glanced up. “Morning… coffee and tea over there,” she nodded with a smile.

Rachel considered for a moment “Well we’re talking about at least two months of travel, plus any time spent studying the actual planets, I recommend starting with the nearest world, it’s been a while since we’ve done a good spot of exploration like this, some empty space’ll do us good.”

Alison tapped the chime, and stepped in as the door opened for her. She was already carrying a cup of coffee in her hands. “Good morning,” she said as she stepped in.

“I agree with MACO. Start at the nearest unless there is a reason not to. If we get a call to be somewhere else in a hurry then we can always try your hobby Captain and sling shot our way to the next target.”
