They move along what looked like a post-apocalyptic landscape. Torn flooring, ripped ceiling, eerie patchwork constructs, sometimes the whole of the landscape twisted and bent as though a giant hand had pulled it like so much putty. There were no life signs in the vicinity and their lights made ghostly shadows wherever they landed. Their ‘reps’ appeared somewhat at a loss, though Tosc appeared to have some idea and led the way.

In time they came to a wall of metal. The ‘transit’ tunnel had been bolted over as had other side hatches. Stairs and railings twisted up the wall to these hatches while the transit tunnel looked solid. Tosc said, “This is where all went and did not return.”

Alison nodded, “Alright everyone, tie off to each other. Just in case something slips. Ensign, you get the rear.” Pulling at the tether from the rear of her suit, she handed it to one of their reps to clip onto his suit, and going back from there.

Pulling out her hand scanner, she pointed it down the tunnel. It looked pretty steady, but you never knew. Especially when there were stories of people going in, and never coming back.

“Yes, sir” said Ensign Bohannon as he hooked up his line to the others. “We are ready to proceed sir” came the further response from Bohannon.

Bohannon

Alison nodded, “and everything looks good. But everyone keep an eye out, and watch your step.”

Taking the first step, Alison headed into the tunnel. Going carefully with each step she took, just in case the floor wouldn’t support her.

The wall that they came to stopped them. Three separate hatches were visible, one at the end of a tall ladder. The other two were a third of the way up, and two thirds up along the wall where a landing from the metal stairway opened up before continuing. The ‘transit’ rails ended at the wall were the tunnel had been plugged. In essence they came to a dead end apart from the three portals and the plug.

Not knowing what to do Bohannon asked, “Should we go back and find another way?”

Alison turned towards Tosc, “Do you know which way they went when they came here?”

Looking up at the stairway, she wasn’t quite sure if it could take their weight.

A scan would show that the metal was fatigued however still strong enough from its bulk to take their weight. Probably.

Tosc had been surveying the railing and portals, then kicked at the rail that he was standing beside. “Only one of the transmissions could tell us anything about this. They said ‘we are starting to climb’. That was all.” He scrutinized the ladder. “If I was designing this one of the doors would lead to an administrative office, or switch room for the rails. I’d guess the other two were service tunnels. I’d put the office at the top.” He seemed to shrug. “That is what I would do.”

Alison looked up at the ladder and shuddered. The scanner said that the metal was fatigued, and should be strong enough. But it sure didn’t look like it.

She pointed the scanner up at the two other openings, hopefully trying to see if she could get any readings. While she looked, she turned her head towards Bohannon. “Take a look over at the sealed tunnel. See how bad it is, maybe we can make our way through instead.”

Scans would indicate that there were chambers beyond each. While it was difficult to speak of ‘age’ as this entire region is ancient, there was some indication of work having been done on the second of the portals - a kind of reinforcement at the mechanism.

The sealed tunnel was just that. Sealed. The metal plug was some meter thick . It was hard to tell what was beyond.
