Bane touched a simple control pad on the armrest. Nothing he did looked to activate anything manually but it lit up. A moment later he replied, “Captain, the Bane has no interest in getting in your way of helping whomever is there within. Your sensors can, if you are closer, identify them. On the screen there appeared a rough area of the inner space with the black hole at its center. There appeared three circles … whether they were best guesses or regions or both .. “When you are closer you can focus your sensors there. “

Melissa continued with her patrol and awaited further orders.

Maco

Melissa was checking the system access logs when a junior Maco, one NCO Julian Fields, whispered to her. “I hear we’re getting a bunch of the aliens over here for some conference. What kind of security should we set up for that?” Glancing to the ‘Bane’ his cheek twitched. “Is that okay?”

“If you get me close enough Captain, I can definitely see if we can find those singularities. But we are going to have to get much closer.”

Looking at her console, Alison had a feeling that they would almost have to enter the sphere in order to get a good scan of those areas.

Ari glanced at the screen. They would have to be much closer. She didn’t like the idea, but it couldn’t be helped, apparently.

She nodded to Barr. “Alright folks, let’s see what there is to see. Helm, one quarter impulse. And only till we get readings. I definitely DON’T want to go inside that… thing.” She frowned slightly as she wondered just how much help Bane was being. Either he truly didn’t care who they helped, or she was about to get shot in the back, so to speak.

The ship was able to move to the threshold of the Sphere and hold there. Sensors were able to pick up everything that was noteworthy on a broad scale. They were able to see farther than the shuttle pods and note that there were regions of the space where there were a number of Sphere (small) clusters while two areas picked up larger clusters. So too there were broad swaths of the surface/area around where there was nothing. The surface in close up scans showed bare metal and in other areas where there looked to be girders or ribs of the surface virtually pulled up and twisted. They were at that point able to pick out the Bonnie’s shuttle pods in one area not too far into the entry.

Nearer to the core they could pick up one faint detection of what could be a gateway that Bane was speaking of. There was a lot of interference from the black hole with the sensors and the energy around it.

“Captain....” Alison trailed off as she looked at the sensors. “It’s not much, but I can definitely make out where Bane was indicating. There is a lot of interference from the singularity and the other energy sources in there, I can’t get a clear scan. Though we are getting a lot more information on the interior of the sphere....”

Alison adjusted her readings slightly. “And I have a positive lock on one of the shuttle pods as well.”

The XO’s voice came through the comms: [O] Baumann to Bonaventure. Prepare for incoming shuttle craft. We will be… escorting… the delegates. [O]

Baumann, XO

Ari looked at the screen and shook her head in wonderment. “What possesses someone to build something like this?”

It was a rhetorical comment and as the comm chimed, she shook off the thought. [O]Bonnie standing by, Bauman. We’re ready.[O] She then glanced at the NCO on the bridge. “Go to the shuttle Bay and escort our guests to the conference room, please.”

[O] Acknowledged, Captain. [O} was all the XO said in response.

The Captain looked back at the Bane look-alike. “Is there anything you can offer by way of help, in this? I mean, peace is there easy part, if we can get them to agree. But it looks like their inner… world… Is collapsing. Is there anything that can be done to either help stabilize this mini universe or are they all going to end up like the scaffolding; yanked up and sucked into the black hole?”

A brief thought crossed her mind of the Admiral stripping her if the Bonnie for ‘rescuing’ those inside and offering them an Earth colony to begin over again.

A thought crossed Alison’s mind, how long did they have before the singularity completely disrupted the inner surface of the sphere. Pulling up the scans that they previously taken of the singularity, she started a simulation to see how long it would be before the inside was no longer hospitable.

It was uncertain of whether the black hole was expanding or changing and whether it would lead to the destruction of the Dyson Sphere. If things kept on as they were with no change, given the status of the anti grav generators that were keeping the habitation spheres from being pulled into the black hole, it was only a matter of time before they failed. It was clear that the scavenging of parts was out of self preservation, but that would only last so long on its own. Perhaps a generation was all that was left - perhaps more for the last holdouts. System failure without some form of rejeuvenated technology was inevitable.

Bane replied, “It is evident. Their technology is failing. Unless new technology is found,” the holo image seemed to shrug, “they are doomed. An exodus is necessary without new information or resources.”

The brusque German accent of the XO came through the comms. [O] Baumann to Bonaventure. Delegates are settled and we are en route. Respectfully request Captain Bovar and Chief Science Officer’s presence upon arrival. Please have Marine delegation ready to assist Sphere City shuttle and it’s occupants. [O]

Doomed

The word was so archaic in Ari’s mom’s that it actually took her a heartbeat to realize what he said. New technology seemed a possibility, but she didn’t feel right helping a civilization make such a technological leap outside their own right. Then she had an idea.

“Barr… See if there are any suitable planets nearby. Perhaps relocation might be a better option then giving them replicators and scanners.” If they could be relocated, given a chance to evolve at their own pace, the Captain would certainly sleep better.

As Baumann chimed in, she smiled. Answering his comm, she then nodded to Allison. [O] Copy that, Baumann. We’ll be there. And we’ll see that the rest are taken care of. [O] Nodding to the NCO she added, “See they get food and blankets and medical care if needed. The bay should be big enough to hold them for now. We’ll get these talks going then see if we need more long term accommodations.”

As she turned for the door, she glanced back at Bane. ” Would you like to accompany us and meet the Sphere inhabitants?” While she wasn’t sure to what end, somehow it seemed right to invite him along.

A scan of the region was bleak, but not entirely so. This region was known as the Seven Dwarves because the surrounding systems in the sector had each descended into white dwarf stars. The nearest systems that would fit the bill - as in living stars with sensors noting planets - were in the next sector. It was a distance, however long range scans showed the stars holding planets and some potentially within range of life bearing. It was entirely uncharted where they were looking.

The slightly transparent form of Ari that Bane had adopted paused and inclined its head. “Truly I would be most interested, Captain.”

The shuttle pods and the larger transport were on approach and would be at the Bonnie within the next ten minutes. The transport was sizeable, looking more like a space worthy zeppelin, dwarfing the two Bonaventure shuttle pods that accompanied it.
