Ari began pacing as she awaited news from the sphere or the Marines. Biting her lip for a moment in thought, she then turned to Barr. “Alison… Can you tap into any system of the Sphere from here? If not, perhaps we can get Heiro’s help. If we can start checking the systems to see where the break is, maybe we can get the others online and able to help. The umm.... the Editors… ” It was a long shot, but if they could ‘wake up’ the system within the sphere, maybe it would help defend itself. She just hoped she wasn’t opening a Pandora’s Box in doing so. They were the intruders… it wouldn’t go well if the system turned on them.

With a slowly fading scene, HeiroLy disappeared from the bridge …

Tapping into the Sphere was not possible from this location; it looked like they would need to be closer or inside.

“Um.... I can try Captain. But my expertise is not in computer hacking, it’s in exobiology. But I’ll try…”

Alison used the comm connection they had with the sphere. She had done this a couple of times back in school, but calling her rusty would be generous. But despite everything she tried, it wasn’t working. Maybe someone with more experience would have better luck, but from what she could tell it didn’t look possible. It was possible that the same systems that kept the internal and external systems separate, also made it impossible to tap into the systems remotely.

After a few minutes she pushed herself back from the console and ran her hands back through her hair. It just wasn’t going to work.

“Captain, I don’t have the skills to get through their systems. Perhaps if we got closer, or from inside the sphere, we’ll have better luck. My best guess is that whatever keeps their internal and external systems separate, is also stopping me from getting through.”

Ari sighed and sat in her seat as the vision on the view screen disappeared. “Ok… so let’s sum this up,” she was thinking out loud and it was sounding a bit ridiculous even to her own ears. “We have a team inside trying to keep a war from escalating further… a MACO team on its way to assist and out here, on the rim of what could possibly be a celestial nightmare, we are deaf, dumb and blind.”

She glanced around the bridge. “So what do we do? I won’t make this a unilateral decision.” She made sure to connect to the eyes of everyone on the bridge, from the NE beside the Helm to the Science Chief. “My suggestion is we do what we set out to do… make contact. Leave the ‘known’ safety of our position for the ‘unknown’ closer to the sphere. If we are lucky, we can help create a peace in a warring ecosphere closed off from the rest of the universe. Worse case, we end up doing something ridiculously stupid and perish. I’m a science geek and want to jump in with both feet but this time, I want crewmates, not blind followers. What do you say?”

She knew it was risky, and she doubted any other Captain said ‘Hey guys, I’m ready to lunge ahead… but what do you think?’. She would have taken T’Leia aside to ask her opinion, but this time it was her XO she was thinking of and she worried it was muddling her view. She wouldn’t admit it out loud, but T’Leia and Baumann were the reason she was chomping at the bit to roar in with weapons blazing to save her crew.

“Well, um, Captain…” Alison said as she looked around the bridge at the other crew. “I vote we go in. I can’t do anything more from out here. But, if we move closer, I might be able to finally pick up something that can help us.

“And if nothing else, being closer means we can pull the teams out faster if things go really bad.”
