Melissa strode toward the shuttle bay and prepared for whatever was next.

MACO

Ari looked around the bridge and sighed as she glanced back at the slow moving scene at the sphere. “Why can’t all first encounters be as simple as ‘Hi, we’re aliens and want to be friend’? Subterfuge and the unknown aren’t so much fun anymore.” She laughed and scratched her head before sitting back down again.

“Ok,” she tapped the comm on her chair arm, [O] Baumann, T’Leia… either of you have anything yet?[O]

She hoped something would come of this investigation soon. Something wasn’t right… and for the life of her she couldn’t figure out what it was.

Baumann spoke softly and said [O] We have initiated contact with one being called Dal. We are following him further into the sphere. Security team has secured and is guarding the shuttle, and second team and myself is with the exploratory team, Captain. [O]

The large shape slowly turned its ‘nose’, or one of them, toward the Bonnie and then fired unseen thrusters or something and it approached the ship at what might be a quarter-ish impulse. Scans showed it to be uninhabited but weapons ports were visible over its hull. They were, as yet, closed. Comms did chirp. A transmission was coming from it.

Ari stood up with a soft growl. “All right folks… I want all weapons on standby and be prepared to react in a heartbeat. I want shields and red alert the minute its weapons ports open. Understand?”

She then tapped the arm of her chair, her gaze never flinching from the screen. [O]Baumann… T’Leia… the ship outside is heading this way. If you can find a polite way to ask, find out their intentions. I don’t want to raise shields if it’s a diplomatic ship.[O] She doubted it was, but if they were listening, she didn’t want to risk an incident, either.

Ari’s voice then came over the ship comm to the MACO in the bay, [O] Barber… want you all on standby… that ship is stepping up the pace like it wants a kiss… I want you ready at my command to handle whatever they throw at us. I’ve warned the away team as well. [O]. Her voice was calm, but there was still an undertone of pressure that would let the MACO know there was certainly something afoot… and the science mind of their CO was no longer amused.

“Captain, whatever it is looks pretty threatening, it looks like it has quite a few weapons ports all over its exterior,” Alison said looking over the scans. “It also appears to be uninhabited. But, Captain, it is hailing us.”

It approached to well within weapons range of and from the Bonnie. There was a sudden change like a light switch turning, and there was a darkness around the ship. It wasn’t a cloak as it was not transparent but opaque. It came up distinctly as difficult to see on the viewscreen with black on black, or black blip against grey black surface of the sphere. Scans would show a kind of energy field, though distinctly different from any of their technology, be it shields or any of its predecessors.

The hail continued.

Baumann’s voice came over the comms. [O] Baumann to Captain. The individuals here have no inclination as to the nature of the vessel. They seem to be unaware of anything outside their sphere… including us. They are asking what is ‘outside’ besides us. [O]
