The hatch opened and the team was met with the unusual scene of a tube about 10 meters long and two meters or so in diameter. A narrow ‘catwalk’ was along one side that was slatted and could be used as a ladder if needed. It was made of a dull grey metal showing signs of corrosion while the tube itself appeared to be a milky translucent plastic. One one place it appeared that the ‘universal’ repair mechanism - duct tape - had been applied to a crack in one spot near to where they disembarked. There was not a lot of ‘fanning out’ as much as lining up. There was the feel of a light gravity that might be akin to the moon on the catwalk. It had an ‘old’ feel to it with dirt, soot or grease smudges here and there along the tube.
At the far end there was a single figure. Thin with a form that couldn’t make up its mind from being reptilian or humanoid, it bore arms that were humanoid but shorter than the norm, a trunk that was rounded and scaled with a light sheen of what might be feathers. The legs were sturdy and a short tail could be seen peeking out from behind it. The face was remarkably humanoid, however, with round eyes under prominent ridged brows that met and then formed a kind of vertical ridge bisecting its skull. Its mouth was wide with no visible ‘lips’ and when it opened its mouth it showed a row of thin, sharp teeth. Its nose was more hooded than prominent and there were no ears visible. The most striking feature was that the skull ridge was a light blue coloration.
“I am Dal,” he said. “Welcome.” The tone was cautious, hopeful but frightened.
Wookiee for DAl
T’Leia stepped forward so she was at the front of the group, she hoped Dysart would translate if needed and glanced at him before she spoke to Dal. “I am Commander T’Leia from the SS Bonaventure, an Earth ship. These are my crewmates; Lt. Baumann, Chief Engineer, Dr. Grey-CMO, Lt. Dysart-Linguist, Lt. jg Woods-Security, and Lt. Locke scientist.”
Commander T’Leia
OOC: Did you just call Baumann the CE… He’s not the CE.
OOC: Oops sorry! LOL
IC: “Baumann’s the Armory Chief, I’m the Chief Engineer,” Fleet spoke up quickly, looking somewhat offended by the fact that the Commander had completely left him out and attributed his rank to someone else.
Fleet, CE
Baumann looked at the Chief Engineer and said very quietly “Perhaps we can sort that out later, Commander? I think the language barrier may make the error a moot point, in any case.” and he stepped to just behind Commander T’Leia. Nodding once in the direction of Dal. Baumann’s hands were relaxed and his posture non-aggressive, but the phase pistol on his hip was close.
Baumann, AC
Rachel stifled a snort of laughter, converting it into a slight cough. First mission with the Fleet and they were bickering about introductions. Quite amusing indeed. She made a mental note of the strangers appearance, wishing she were scanning the man at present but decided against it. Might be considered rude.
Dr. Grey CSO
Dal looked from one to the other. His eyes, which were already at a wide point may have widened further. Evidence of his emotions came through perhaps in his mouth widening, his teeth showing up more. His arms opened in a gesture, palms up - if palms they were. The hands were thin and long, fingers as well, with, nails looking to be the whole of the last knuckle coming to a point.
“Come,” he said. “Dal will lead.” With that he disappeared through the hatch behind him …

“I can take point if you need me too Sir” Max offered his services.
Woods
“Have Bravo secure the shuttle. Keep this umbilical clear and comms open. Report any changes immediately.” he said to the team in general. “Mr. Woods, take rear guard. Delta, intersperse between crew. Perimeter formation when we get somewhere less constricted.” and then he looked at the XO. “Ma’am, if you do not mind. I will take the lead.” and he stepped around her and began moving in the direction Dal had indicated.
Baumann, AC
T’Leia nodded as Baumann moved past her into the lead, then she followed.” Lieutenant Locke, please scan and record the area as we go through.”
Listening to Dal’s speech and observing his behaviour, Alan noticed something odd. He whispered “Sir. Upturned palms is typically a sign of subservience, and his use of the name Dal in the third person as well as using first person pronouns suggests that it may be a title as well as a name. Nominative determinism if you will. He has free will, but ‘Dal’ performs certain functions.”
-Lt(j.g.) Alan Dysart, Linguist
“What delightful insight lieutenant “Rachels crooked smile had returned “Dal is Dal who also is Dal” The doctor teased from behind the linguist.
Dr. Grey CMO
Ignoring the Doctor’s humor, T’Leia answered Dysart.”I do not get a sense of aggression from his speech or mannerisms. Do you concur, Dysart? It would seem his people may be a more open species.”
Commander T’Leia
“I would tend to agree. Or at least that is Dal’s function. As a goodwill ambassador. Though he seemed rather nervous. Maybe he’s new, or they’re open but not used to visitors.”
-Lt(j.g.) Alan Dysart, Linguist
As they progressed further into the sphere, the communicator activated. [O]Baumann, T’Leia… we have something detaching from the ship. Something large. Keep your hackles up.[O] came the voice of the Captain. Baumann stopped for a moment and said [O] Understood, Captain. Please keep us updated [O] and he looked at Commander T’Leia. “Commander, perhaps a query to our guide would be prudent at this point?” In his mind, Baumann was in charge of Security. He would let the discussions and negotiations be handled by others. Looking back at Woods he said calmly. “Head on a swivel, Mr. Woods. We may have further guests.”
