His orders had come extremely quickly.

One minute he had been midway through some scientific research, next minute he had been informed that he was being assigned to the SS Sojourner on an interim basis to fill a position which had unexpectedly become available. For a man with very little experience, he was extremely surprised the Admiral had assigned him to fill the vacant Executive Officer role on the exploration craft but he wasn’t going to turn it down, that was for sure.

It appeared he wasn’t to be the only new addition to the crew of the SS Sojourner. His transfer orders also specified that he would be travelling to the vessel with it’s newest Chief Engineer, a Lieutenant much like him by the name of Garrison. They’d boarded the Shuttlepod together but hadn’t said much to each other since, with Rhys opting to look out of the window and the vast unexplored emptiness of space.

The young Lieutenant ran his fingers through his hair and spun in his chair to face the newest Chief Engineer.

“A chance to explore space” he said finally, softly spoken. His British accent was obvious and he made no attempt to hide it. “The Sojourner reportedly has a crusing speed of warp 3.2. If it’s true, we’re going to be the first to see so much of this galaxy” he commented before taking a moment. “Excuse my lack of manners, don’t think I’ve introduced myself. Lieutenant Hetherington, acting Executive Officer” he stated, offering his hand.

Lieutenant Hetherington - XO/CSO

“Lieutenant Garrison, I’m the ships new Chief Engineer,” Paige answered taking his hand. Beneath the calm exterior, her mind was still catching up to everything that had happened in the last couple of hours. What had started as a pretty normal transfer had almost been a comedy of errors. First, there was an emergency recall of the Sojourner crew as they had an emergency mission. Which wouldn’t have been a problem until her last transport had engine issues, so was going to arrive late. And then the shuttlepod basically getting commandeered for some reason, so the pilot was over eager to get going. It was enough to put cracks in her normally calm demeanor, and it was nice to finally be on the final leg to the Sojourner.

“I hadn’t heard that the ship was getting a new XO.”

Lt. Paige Garrison - CE

“It wasn’t, until about two hours ago”

Rhys had rushed himself to get ready and still didn’t have everything with him that he would have liked. He’d been assured all of his belongings would be following him at a later date but he’d been told to travel light. There was already an emergency recall of crew and he was a very last minute addition so he didn’t really have time to pack everything as neatly as he would have liked to have packed.

“I don’t know the full details” he continued. “I just know two men knocked my door and told me I was making for the Sojourner and didn’t really have time to pack. It’s only as I was boarding this shuttlepod I was briefed that I’d be taking up the role of XO” he spoke. “I genuinely still don’t think I’ve processed it, I’ve not really had time to be honest with you”

He cast his eyes out of the window and watched as the spacedock came into view.

Well that would explain the shuttlepod, at least Paige’s day hadn’t been upended that badly.

“Understable. And here I thought my day was stressful because my transfer was late,” she said with a single laugh. “Do you know anything about the Sojourner?”

Lt. Paige Garrison - CE

He offered a laugh in response to the new Chief Engineer.

“The Sojourner specifically, very little” he commented. “Luckily this isn’t my first time upon a Lunar Rover class however, so I have a vague understanding of how they operate”

Lieutenant Hetherington - XO/CSO

Paige nodded. “This is my first time on this particular class, but I’ve been reading through the manual. It doesn’t quite go into how to fix the warp core, but it does talk about how many cup holders there are on the bridge,” she said with a laugh.

He offered a smile to the Chief Engineer.

“A useful thing to note” he chuckled. “Where can I keep my water bottle?” he questioned, still chuckling. “They’re complex ships, honestly. They’re capable of exploring and finding new things, takes a lot of skill to keep them running. I have faith in you” he added.

Lieutenant Hetherington - XO/CSO

“Well I’ll try not to let you down sir. I mean, it can’t be that different then other ships right? Just don’t play with the anti-matter, and try to keep her in one piece.

“Oh and I’d look about about 30 centimeters to your left, there seems to be a cup holder in that location for just about every station. Except for the Captain’s chair, that one is tucked under the right armrest. It swings out.”
